Thread: rude BE's?

i swear i've had so many customers telling me lately that usually the other BE's they talk to are pretty rude to them. they are relieved to find a nice BE for a change. i'm not trying to toot my horn or anything here. it seems a given that you should be nice especially considering these are potential customers. yeah...i've had my fair share of "OMGLOLmake me an uberLV10pet KTHXBYE!!", and yeah, it's annoying. but i simply tell them that i won't do that, explain to them why and then they usually end up buying one of mine. i've even had newbie BE's say that other BE's were rude to them when they tried to ask them questions. what's with that? i doubt many of you here are like that, but i'm just wondering if any of you have heard similar things or if it's just my server.

i seem to remember someone posting something not too long ago...i don't know if it was here, or if it was in my server forum, but they were asking why BE's are so rude. i remember someone responded with "be's are rude because they can afford to be." i don't know if that person was a BE or not, but that seems like a dumb reason to be rude. chefs make a heck of a lot more money than we do, so why is there this whole elitestthing happening with some BE's? it seems this is a real issue here and i'm wondering what your thoughts are on it.

As someone who's been on both sides lemme give a couple reasons

1) Players don't comprehend that there are 3 kinds of BEs, pet specialists, tissue specialists, and the people that do both. So when they ask a BE "I'm looking for a good CL35 pair for my MCH" and they get the reply "I don't make pets", they figure "why be a BE then dork" and write the BE off as rude. This is very similar to the weaponsmith's problem of ranged weapon WSs vs melee weapon WSs. Not much you can do short of explaining the difficulties of maintaining a full bore tissue vendor and still having time for sampling/assembling DNA to them and even then they are unlikely to get it. Best bet in my humble opinion is to be able to refer people to someone who is the opposite kind of BE to yourself "Sorry I don't make pets, but send a tell to Georgie, he's a pet specialist".

2) MCHs with no clue (I was one of these). "Hey Mr BE I'd like to order 3 CL23 gurrecks with light armor 60% kinetic and energy resist 100% heat resist and 25% to the other resists. They should also have dizzy and intimidate as thie specials. Can I pick them up tonight" Not much you can do to educate these folks, they just have to make a BE and see how the recipes work for themselves.

The main reason I found is because we can't offer them what they want so they get abusive and we return fire or ignore them. There is also the multitude of tells that we receive.

"Can you make me xxx"

"No I'm busy making yyy for someone else"

"It wont take long, it only needs to following stats: zzz"

"Sorry, that would take several hours to make"

"No it wont"

"Who's the BE here?"

"screw you, I'm reporting you."

*sigh*

People need to be more patient with crafters because they do a good job and without them we would be screwed.

I can't recall having a customer ever complain to me about other BE's on my server in terms of rudeness. In fact, Bria is (or was) crawling with BE's and we've had some pretty nice folks there (a lot of whom are active in this forum). But we have to accept that this game is dominated by early teens, and early teens, as a whole, are a pretty self-centered, inconsiderate bunch. That's not a knock on them, that just goes with the territory. But if I were to characterize the players that I've corresponded with in-game, I'd have to say that the BE's I've known (and I've probably gotten to know a dozen or more) tend to be more mature, more well spoken, and quite frankly more of the kind of people I enjoy hanging out with and chatting with in-game. Perhaps it is that difference in maturity level that causes the perceived "rudeness" on both sides. Dunno, but that is a possible explanation.

Now let's talk other groups. It never ceases to amaze me the difference in clientele between tailor and BE. The typical greeting from a BE customer is:

"I need..." (pet/free schematic)

or worse

"what's the best..." (occasionally there is some qualification like CL or a certain skin or whatnot, but just as often there is no qualification)

in which case (should I even choose to respond to that "demand" disguised as a greeting) the conversation quickly degenerates into a combination of l33t and badly broken english as if they guy on the other end of the keyboard had just recently received a very serious blow to the head. Andtypically this exchange is going to lead to some outrageous demands consisting of requests for exploited products and demands for the "best pet you've ever made" types of requests. 75% of the time when I receive such a "greeting" I leave it unanswered. Some may consider that "rude", I consider it pre-empting what will very likelybe an extremelyfrustrating exchange. Do I lose business? Yep, of course. But it's the only way I can retain my sanity and it's why I've been able to stay a BE for over 12 months now. Being selective in the customers you choose to serve is a very important thing to do. This is a game, it's supposed to be fun, and serving rude/inconsiderate people, regardless of how many credits are in your bank account when you log out for the night, is not a fun thing to do.

When the tailor tag is up though, it's amazing how differently you are treated. A typical greeting will be:

"hello there"

or

"hi, can you spare a minute?"

I dunno, call me crazy, but just that subtle difference right there makes a world of difference, and generally the conversation afterwards reflects that difference in a pretty extreme way as well.

I tend to always get 'Hi!'.

To which I respond 'Hi!'

There's normally a 10 sec pause while im thinking, please don't let this one be a stupid or unreasonable question...

Thing is, we aren't the only ones, I was using my MasterChef/Master Merchant alt the other day, coming back from Harvesters with Chef tag up.

I had a tell along the lines of 'Teach me Desserts I'.

As I was logging in, and not able to respond for about 2 mins, I then got a tell of abuse afterwards for being 'lame' and not responding.

Suffice it to say, I just /addignore and jumped shuttle to Coronet where I lost him in the crowd.

We might be perceived as rude, because most of us have a low tolerance for ignorance and stupidity. Just the other night I was on and saw some guy buy 3 pets off my vendor, It must have been the brandy, but stupid me sent him a thank you e-mail. The responce was You know, these pets are great but I could really use 4 lvl 35 rancors for me and my friend.

I thought "DOH!" Why, Why did I do that. Again the Brandy kicked in and I said "so is that 4 or 8 total. (Like I was going to do it either way.)

And he responds back 8! (mind you we are still e-mailing back and forth instead of tells.)

So I send back, I don't make custome pets, but I am planning to make a DNA run soon, I can try for that. And let you know if I can pull it off or give you first pick of the pets.

Response: No I need 8 lvl 35 rancors I am in no rush I could wait until tomorrow.

Sorry dude, my play time is limited with my wife having Cancer (No I did not make that up to get ride of him, I know most of you wouldn't put it past me) so it would probably take a weeks to get the specials and to pull off 8 lvl 35 rancors that you would actually want.

... 2 min. later.

Tell? no he emails again.. My friend is a BE and he said it shouldn't take that long, can you have them by tomorrow.

And that was the end for me.

Or was it... Tuesday night I log in in Cornet and low and behold I am smack dab in the middle of a buff line ( actually second from end) When I come through there is bone head pukeing on me telling me I cut in front of his friend.

Yup, Puking on me.

I tried to explain the... obvious? and they wouldn't have it, so I felt the appropriate action was to /ignore and /ban from the shop... I no longer have a vendor, but someday I may again.

GMAN
I moved to Corellia I have no vendor and I don't know the coords to my house, but it doesn't really matter cause all my pets are in the tool box, I may have some in space, but that doesn't really concern you either.

Before I took a break away from the game...a player emailed mesaying I wasrude and wanted an apology because, I told them to go to swgcraft.com to get an exhaustive list of creatures that BE's make at each level. Of course, I did /shout at them but, I didn't think they could hear me with all the aggro I was experiencing from Mutant Rancors....of which I was semi-peacefully DNA sampling until the player road up on their scooter......" with no mask scent" applied. In retrospect, I thought I was more than pleasant and generous withthis person....

I would have to say that I am generally, very pleasant to converse with and forthcoming with answers to most reasonable questions.....also, as long as the player doesn't try to 1337 speak to me. That's the quickest way to make my /addignore list.

Every 5 seconds

Or people who want pets for free.

Or people try to "test me" or fake knowledge. Like "make me a non ch kimogila." And then I say "Kimo has a minimum level of 40" and then they say "I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were doing." It's even worse when they don't even order anything afterwards.

Or people who price gouge when I'm not online, charging 7 time more than I do for equivalent pets.

And the hordes of chefs are starting to get on my nerves. ><

oh god yes! i have suffered that when someone asked me to make them a cl10 ancient krayt dragon, i rolled off an automated macroed response (they're your best friends! use them!) and then i got a reply saying that he used to be a BE and he just wanted to tease me...

i'm only rude when someone's rude to me, but i'm very VERY polite to anyone who's nice to me

even those "hi!...... *long pause* can you make me... ummm.... something?" i'm usually very patient explaining prices, times, the process etc.

but when i get the "my other be only charges such and such" i stop the addignore, i go right into a-hole mode...... "well if he's giving them away, why are you going to someone else? what kind of loyal customer are you?"

i especially love the "can you make me schematic with resource x, y and z?" and immediately open up the trade window...... /sigh

to the person who said about the lame, abuse msgs from you not responding while you were loading...... what in the world is wrong with some people? i get that ALL the time from people, usually talking in "1337 5P34K" /rollseyes
