Thread: BE vs. TKA

Allow me a moment of frustration. Two recent events have frustrated me far more than the incomprehensible system of determining which pets are valid.

First: while trying to sample mutant rancors, amid enormous frustration of trying, dying, trying, dying, I was lying on the ground incapped. Two players came by, one a TKA and the other unidentified. They first taunted, saying rancors weren't for noobs (I'm a master BE), then proceded to start killing the rancors--just the two of them. When I stood up, I mentioned that, for what it is worth, I was sampling DNA from those rancors. One replied, "For what it is worth, we know," and killed the rest of the mutants. I went home that day with burning cheeks and no DNA.

The second, while on an unsuccessfulsearch for mutant squills decided to take a GCW mission to keep the trip from being a total waste, and to perhaps earn enough faction points to be able to take missions to work ona badge. Coming back, having received my wondrous 8 faction points for destroying a flag, I realized that it put up a TEF. At that moment my bike suddenly went from 90% to completely disabled. Then I was hit by a lightning cannon and died. Then my beloved companion, a surveyor, was killed. Then my beloved pet was killed. I saw two overts, one with a lightning cannon, and the other with melee skills, who came up for the deathblows. I tried cloning and retaliating, but found I couldn't attack the players who had killed me. Then suddenly I was killed again. I lost most of my faction points, now not even qualifying for faction affiliation (without knowing that they were at risk). I realized that even in a fair fight with the lightning cannon and the TKE, I would lose, but being ambushed, then not being able to attack until attacked were more frustrating still. I thought PvP required your permission. I hadn't realized until that moment that one could be ambushed. "Surveyor" and "Master Bioengineer" were clearly showing. It seems odd that masters of combat arts would prey on us.

I now realize that artisans have absolutely NO clout in the game. We are at the mercy of any TKA or Bounty Hunter that wants to attack. It leaves me feeling bullied. What can I possibly do in response? Refuse to sell them a pet? The simple fact is that a BE (or any other artisan) has no leverage at all in the game. We are at the mercy of any bully who cares to come along and aggro our DNA targets, shoot our pets, or in other ways make our game lives miserable.

And who got nerfed in release 6? The impotent BE's. TKA's just got better augmentation from the new foods in release 7. I love crafting pets. I just wish we weren't so dispensable and powerless. This game is definitely tilted in favor of combat professions.

Not to sound too harsh, but you can't have it both ways. Combat or Craft. Make your choice. No one gets to have it all.

You can do both. I do.

Let me put it another way. You can't be a master crafter and expect to do well against full fledged combat characters.

that's just it. the GCW has no place for crafters, other than BEs for destroying bases. If we want to play with the other children, we have to pick up some rudimentary weapon skills, which will still be ineffective against most NPC targets. Added to that, most players dont harvest meat, so we are stuck depending on the 4 or 5 master scouts/half rangers in our area who charge 10 cpu for grind quality meat.

Yeah, but that is the way the game was designed. Every character class is dependant on others. You do notice that no one runs around dueling or tanking dragons without armor, buffs (doctor/smuggler/chef), top of the line weapons etc... You are not meant to be self sufficient. That is why they only allow one character per server.

I think you missed my point. I want the craft. I never looked for the combat. The only reason for the GCW mission was becausemost of the mission badges I have found require a faction standing. The point is that there is no way that I can see to avoid becoming the victim of any tanked up warrior who decides to harrass. BE's have to leave the cities and be prepared to face some pretty tough creatures. I've never liked PvP, so I never wanted a part in it. Still, there seems to be no recourse of any sort against a TKA who delights in bringing misery.

That is just another part of the game. The GCW is its own entity. It can be avoided, if that is your wish, but if you choose to kill rebel/imp npc's then you get a temporary flag that show you as an enemy combatant to the other side. There is no risk free way to be part of the war.

To minimise getting jumped like you did though, you should go to one of the rebel/imp outposts to do your faction stuff. Much less likely to find somone trying to pick a fight there. But, there is still a risk.

Excellent advice for the missions. How do you handle people who like making your DNA targets aggro?

In some games PvP is not an option. I played a lot of Diablo2 and someone could quite easily come along and spoil your day ona whim

Here it is consensual but it is not formalised duels. If you take a side then you become a target

You were the aggressor here. You attacked a faction (doing your mission) and other members of that faction retaliated

To most combat characters anything red - especially a player is a legitimate target. Having titles like Surveyor up is irrelevant, at least half of the full-on PvPers walk around with Novice Medic or Novice Scout

Imo, you just got an insight into how the game works for most of the people who play it, and it's a lot cheaper a price to pay here than it would be in Diablo 2 Hardcore where one would have to start all over again

Message accepted. Strange. I posted two posts at the same time, this one, and one that was designed to help people find the animals they needed for sampling DNA. This one has 11 replies, the other one none.

I was hoping to have some means of protecting myself against aggressive players. Instead, the message is essentially, "shut up and take your licks." I accept that. My frustration was that to be attacked by another human being much stronger than I am without knowing it was possible felt a lot like being assaulted feels in real life. Losing my pet, my bike, and my faction points without knowing they were at risk doubly so. I had hoped for advice. I'll accept the reprimand and shut up.
