Thread: karnaugh maps and Ranged skill
Ok, I actually had to pull our my EE316 books and relook up how to do boolean algebra. I did my crazy tests with 160 dna samples and come out with the following results.
To preface this, here is how i gathered my data. I had a 0031 BE do all the combines (for xp). We gathered a multitude of dna from melee and ranged animals, 99% of the ranged came from spineflap guard/maidens what not. The dna was combined in a binary fashion to get all the possible results.

the first collumn represents if the template ended up with ranged or not.
the set of numbers representswhich part of the 5 dna samples had ranged.
Using a karnaugh map, I found the following:
your template will have ranged iff CE+A'DE'+A'D'E'C+ABC'E+AB'CDE'+ABCD'E'.
What the heck does that mean?
A=Physical
B=Prowess
C=Mental
D=Psychological
E=Aggression
'=not ranged.
There is no way to put it simply since it came out with a couple off results. Im going to do a little more testing on the screwy ones just to verify if they used this method for choosing ranged yes/no
yes it's 630 am
Actually i've found that putting a v high quality sample with ranged into the phych slot works 100% of the time. The only time it doesn't stick is when i use high or above average.
I used to teach Digital Logic Design. Your equation can be simpified further:
CE+A'DE'+A'D'E'C+ABC'E+AB'CDE'+ABCD'E'
= CE + A'DE' + A'C + ABE + B'CD + BCD'
which is close to
C + ABE + A'DE'
and not too far from
C + BE (A + D)
which is Mental or ( Prowess and Aggression and either Physique or Psych)
Looking at the K-Map,
Mental has 14 of 16 boxes checked. Prowess, Psych, and Aggression each have 10 of 16 boxes checked. Physique has 8 of 16 boxes checked.
So, base on the K-map, Mental has the largest affect on Ranged. Physique is relatively independent of Ranged, and having Ranged in any of the other three increases the chances of getting Ranged in the clone.
Hehe its all Greek to me!
See I'm not a math supra-genius.... can't make heads or tails of that stuff, never studied it.
I've had very good success sticking the Ranged attack by using the Mental slot, but since it isn't 100%, we have to speculate about what makes it not always stick.
I'll leave the maps and stuff to y'all and give a hypothesis on why it doesn't always stick. I don't think it is any kind of random function deciding. I think that the system runs down a checklist to determine which slot takes priority.
For sake of argument I am going to just pick out of the hat the Cleverness stat (this is NOT saying it is Cleverness, just needed a stat to keep mentioning). Both of you agree that it seems the ranking is Mental (strong), Prowess - Psychology - Aggressiveness (average), Physique (weak), for the weightings on when it shows up. So we could consider each category (strong, average, weak) as having a multiplier.
- Strong = 1.5
- Average = 1.2
- Weak = 1.0
Under this imaginary system, you would consider the weighted value of Cleverness to determine which slot sticks the Mental. Multiply the Cleverness by the multiplier and whichever slot has the highest value would reign supreme. Just a question of how much weighting each slot is given and which stat is pertinent.
Anyway, I muddied up the waters with conjecture here. Sorry
Just had to ramble out what was on my brain and maybe it will give you an idea to add to your list of things to check out.
Just so folks know the ranged attacks are indeed linking with special attack 2 still. I was in the Blueleaf temple on Yavin4 today and the dark kliknik warriors were blasting me with their ranged attacks and I gained the intimidated status effect.
I don't think the Quality of the DNA matters one bit. All that the Quality is telling us is which range of values the template used. So something along the lines of Quality (Range on Power):
- Above Average (100-125)
- High Quality (115-140)
- Very High Quality (125-150)
Thats all I think the Quality on DNA is doing. THose ranges are dependent upon the critter you sampled from. So the Ranges are determined by the critter, unlike before when just the number mattered.
sumo, something I noticed with the first tests is that there is no threshold number, like there is with armor. I didnt have time to work the second test last night*. once i do all 32 tests again with VH, then with H and last with AA, I can put that theory to rest as proven or disproven. If it's disproven, we can start looking at pairings and see why things are coming out in a seemingly random way.
*(I was too busy getting dna with power above 560. I want to try to get a clone with 800 damage, and see how high the cl goes while letting every other stat fall to 2. There seems to be a hard cap on attack speed near 3, and 800/3 is still 266 dps, which shouldnt be much higher than cl 40 from what i've been seeing and what Tal-N posted recently.)
I got a ranged weapon critter with Average and Below average spineflap dna. It does not require really high qualities. My guess is that it depends on the relative qualities of the samples.
