Thread: Sampling -- A thought

When I bought this Game for some reason I thought it would be fun and entertaining. It turns out, I was wrong. I would like to meet the short bus driver at Lucas Arts who thought DNA sampling would be a fun and entertaining way to advance a character.

As far as "Role Playing" goes (gimmie a break), the game is flawed. A Bio-engineer's cannot defend themselves unless they take some form of combat arms. Thus roleplaying a scientist gets kinda fuzzy.

I do not enjoy spending endless hours sampling Nunas, and chubas and flewts. It is not fun. The enjoyment of watching a creature fall over and die because someone "sampled" his DNA. Which, I would assume would be more efficent in the future. If someone wanted my DNA in real life, the year 2004 all they had to get was a few skin cells. You could get those from a comb, your own hand, a piece of cloth, etc.

Aparently, the future sucks, because Speederbikes don't have headlights, rifles dont shoot further than 64m (I personally shoot at 600-1000m) and DNA testing requires you to kill something.

Even if this is a fantasy game (if you can call it that), some form of realism needs to be addressed.

I have a blast sampling. Esp. things like Mutant Rancors and BMB Queens. Absolutely nerve racking.

Maybe you should stop grinding and start playing. If you really want some advice, ask a question, I am sure there are plenty of people happy to lend a hand.

Depends on what you're sampling, if it's something which can rip you limb from limb then there's is a certain rush as you take the sample without knowing if the animal will turn on you. At a low level yes it's frustrating however it's alot more fun than something lke hand sampling for survaying exp.

I known Im a little odd and flawed in my thinking, but i find it a little on the cool side to be standing up to my neck in rancor corpses looking around for another victim to jab with my needle! It is kinda Jedi like when you make that movement with your arm when you first sample and then a few seconds latter this mountain of flesh comes crashing down to earth to lay still at your feet. That is if he doesen't get P.O.ed and try to make a nerf burger outa you! Awww the thrill of sampling!!! I have had newbs observe me sampling and ask are you a Jedi? LOL!!!! I think if you get out of the Tame surroundings of the city and start working some Dangerous creatures you might FEEL the THRILL of a Hazardous profession. This is by far the most enjoyable and profitable profession in the game.Where else can you go and virtually play, dare I say it,yes I dare ,GOD !! You create your own creatures with the samples You take and combine them to Make a one of a kind creature that is Yours! Sorry, I get a littleempassioned whenI talk about my addiction,It has been 9 hrs since I have been logged in the game and the withdrawal is starting to affect me!!! Anyway, try a few missions, they may be more enjoyable for you.Good hunting !

"Maybe you should stop grinding and start playing."

The grind is done. I was 4/4/0/4 in 15 hours. 630xp every 30 seconds. I had no problem with that. Playing? I'm "playing" a bio-engineer. Sampling is all I have left, what do you expect me to do?

If you fail sampling something, eventually it will attack you. How am I, a scientist, supposed to defend myself? Pickets? They make short work of me.

I headed out to Dathomir, went prone, masked scent and tried to get close to a Rancor youth -- corpse

Making one class DEPEND on being another class is stupid. A single class should be able to do everything he is allowed to, by himself.

Class being Doctor, BE, Commando, etc.

Dna sampling is probably the signature skill of bio engineers. Most bio engineers that I know that advanced their characters through PLAYING the profession have found that dna sampling is by far the easiest of the BE skills to advance. True enough, it happens to be the bottleneck for holo grinders. Geez, I actually wish that all skills were like that. Easy to advance in when you play them, difficult to advance in when you are grinding, lol.

BUT... your comment about it not being fun, who can argue? If it's not fun for you, it's not fun for you. bubeye, hope you enjoy your next profession more than this one.

A) Not holo grinding, never have, don't care about Jedi's; well, not until Bounty Hunters can get missions for them, then me and my buds go on a killing spree.

I'm talking about the RPG aspect of the game. A BE is more or less a scientist. He should not have to "learn" commando to keep himself alive while sampling. You would think they would have invented a perfectly safe way for BE's to get DNA in the future. Hell, you can get DNA from horse crap, why cant you harvest from Rancor droppings? Much safer.

Suffice to say, I cant get close enough to a rancor to sample him.

Thats with mask scent and jawa beer, crawling in the prone.

I do not think you should be REQUIRED to get (rifleman?) to be able to sneak in and steal some DNA. Maybe I am missing something?

I think DNA sampling is just fine, it was one hell to skill up till level 3 dna, but then all easy, actually it's my holo, i planned on dropping it the minute i get to master but i am loving it, it's just fun walking into 10 red dots to poke the target and just hope that you get away before it tries to hug you

I always have my trusty swoop bike next to me ready for run, can sample pretty much anything if you approach them from BEHIND.. works for me .

The pre-mentioned queen took me 30 mins to *approach* . **edit** uncovers from 100 miles

I am also ALWAYS buffed, it's well worth it since buffs cost what .. 8k.. and the cash i get by selling nice pets covers it nice and easy .
Oh and i have 80% composite too, so i laugh at poor rancors/mereks/bark mites whatever when they turn, put armor on and walk to bike, drive 200m and return for more

Oh, the most annoying thing actually is the disease i got from endor . ended up with like 700 health wound before i got it cured and patched up

You dont need to defend yourself - just run away. Get some really good armour and a sturdy landspeeder. You really think anyone even will as much combat skills as BE can have tries to beat down a mutant rancor when it aggros?

I never use combat skills when sampling. I use a bike and run out far enough to peace, then run back and try it again. Rancors (I doubt you could get them at level 0) will break my 70% mask about 70% of the time. But if you approach from the best angle, it'll be one of them and even then it seems that 50M is about the usual distance. Plenty of time to get out before they aggro you.

If you shoot at something with a DB, you can be sure you'll be dead. Sampling seems to buy me an incap more often even from some of the real nasties. ( I still think they're either giving me credit for guts or laughing so hard they can't kill me )

If you think it's boring when you stand a chance of being ripped apart then imagine how it's even more boring when there is utterly no risk involved. Let me tell you this, back when i was beta testing BE every single failure used to draw aggro. The system was going to be like that until me and the small handful of others testing the profession told them it was frustrating.. but despite that it made dna sampling give people a real rush considering how frequent failures used to be. No risk, no reward.
