Thread: New Artisan skill...Salvage

This is something I thought up that would probably be useful to any artisan. When someone gets Engineering IV, they should get the ability to Salvage components from items they loot or buy.

For instance.... You kill some thug and loot a used and crappy CDEF carbine. Instead of plugging it in the bazaar like the thousands of other CDEF carbines, you should be able to dismantle it and retrieve resources from it. Not the full resources used in making it, of course, but maybe 1/5th of the resources, rounded down, so in some instances you wouldn't get any of a particular resource. This would give teh chance, however slim, of getting some of the older resources that have been cycled out.

Of course, there would be a base chance of failing and destroying the item without getting anything. Another area this would be useful is in the Droid Engineer skills set.

Instead of releasing or destroying an old droid that you want to get rid of, you'd simply dismantle it. You would be able to retrieve any components from it (used and not at full quality, but still usable). Those components could be used to make a new droid or refurbish the older one.

For DE's it could also function like the scout's /harvest ability. When the enemy is a Droid (Imperial Medic comes to mind), you would be able to /salvage components from it once you kill it. Not all components would survive the battle, but you should be able to get SOMETHING.

It would have to be balanced of course to keep someone from just scooping up all the newbie weapons from the bazaar and salvaging them, but it's almost 5 am and I've not thought that far ahead.

Just my 2 credits.

Reposted from the Artisan board because it would definatly impact Droid Engineers.

this would really help us out too bad we are the lowest piroity. they may implement this right after the space expansion.

our numbers were low so we wern't a priority now that DE is even worse and more DE are quiting we will be even lower on the list!!!

yes, I think it's a pretty cool idea... one which I've thought of at one point in time as well, except I was thinking of calling it /recycle or something

Yea. it worked quite well in DAoC.

The only drawback I see is ending up withdozens 1 or 2 unit bits of different kinds of metal that I can't use for anything because all the schematics call for more than 1 or 2 units.

How about a way to recycle old resources that you only have a couple pieces left? Since they're said a resource will never come back again, I've probably destroyed a couple hundred because of not having a use for them (and now being out of storage space because of the 75 item per lot limit)

Very good idea!! There should be something to do with all the junk also that only the junk dealer will buy.

Only potential problem I see is that it would promote grinding. Maybe it could be solved by puting a timer on the /salvage command?? Any ideas?

A timer could be useful and something like it should possibly be mind intensive. That would help cut down the grinding I think.

Thinking about it, you definatly have a point SquidBush. I know I've had this problem before where I had 1 or 2 units of a single resource and couldn't do anything with it.

Maybe when you salvage something, it would give specific resources, so that this problem doesn't arise. I know it may not be realistic, considering the lower end stuff could have any number of possible resources, but I don't think it'd matter all that much.

Any other ideas? I'd like to see what a Dev thinks of this idea.

Actually if they just created a standard "Generic" of each resource type (ie Generic Polymer, Generic Steel etc) and then just allowed you to pull these resources out of an item through /salvage. The quality of the resource would be low to average at best, but it would be a way to turn all the old junk into something useable at least for skilling purposes if nothing else. Would make the person who looted that CDEF Pistol feel like they actually got something for almost getting their butt fried off...

That's a good idea too. Just make static resources that are NEVER mined or sampled. Only salvaged from existing items. The relatively low stats will allow early players to grind a few XPs from something they salvaged or make the junk worth something to other players and not just end up destroying it (Honestly, who goes out of their way to find a junk dealer when the best you're going to see is 10 credits?)

So what's to stop you from /salvaging your own crafted items to get some of the materials back, instead of destroying them or /practicing?

...unless /practice has /salvage built in, so in practicing you lose some resources but not all?

I like the idea of droid disassembly too. This would come in useful later if vehicles, ships are added. Could maybe add a new salvage tool to the artisan/engineering schematics. Resources gained back should be fairly low, tho.

Also, why not removal of components on weapons, pharm, or armor, even tailored goods?

As far as recycling your own stuff, why not? It happens in real world crafting like that quite often (with the same low return on resources).
