Thread: New Artisan skill...Salvage
Stymnus,
I think you hit on it! The XP bonus from /practice is the XP that would be awarded for preforming a /salvage. But I would still have it return the lower quality "generic" material is it is no longer pristine woodpulp, but rather recycled newsprint (etc.).

Actually, I should even salvage the items I crafted myself!
But at a lower factor, so if they don't sell I can reuse Resource to gain Xp!
This skill is needed to empty the bazaar of all the crap ![]()
I like it!
I agree. Get the components back from the items - much like you get three components for the artisan missions. You could then sell them on to weaponsmiths, armorsmiths, maybe slicers etc and generate some modest income.
Great idea.
being able to recover some of the resources used is a good idea. But as some said, there isn't much use for just a few bits of the resource in any production. But the generic resource idea would solve that. but how about being able to sell that to the junk dealer? I see them about town, but no matter what I carry I can't sell anything to them.
As for the grinding, they have added a 5% xp bonus if you tick "practice" while making an item. As for grinding out items and then recycle them for a % of the resources used wouldn't promote more grinding I think. You lose all resources when you practice, but you dont have to stop and empty your inventory. if you recycle your grind object or other objects you find or are obcelete you gain some of the resources back.
Another idea is that there are recycle stations in towns that you sell the recycled resources to. and based on their various stats you get some cash for it. Lat idea may not be the best if you use that as a way to sell resources from harvesters, but making the recycled resource have something that tells it apart from the surveyable resource could solve that.
Or allow us to mix resources in the creation, to get rid of those odd resources we all end up with.
Stats on the finished product is already based on the stats of the resource, so I dont think it would be difficult for the devs to add that option. Sure. make the final product lose some stats might be a way, but atleast it allows us to clear up some room
I like your ideas a lot, Kaldeth.
I've noticed on the voting that a lot of people, but not all, seem to be against the /salvage command. Most think it would hurt the economy by being able to recover resources from items we craft. This really wouldn't be the case. The resources recovered wouldn't be of very high quality, and we would only get a fraction of what was needed to craft the item. Not sure what % the devs would use, but going from an earlier example, you would have to /salvage 5 old CDEF carbines to have enough materials to craft1 new one. For items that use specific components, you could recover some of those components.
This would open up a new business of buying used items, /salvaging them, and selling the recycled resources to lower level artisans to use in XP grinding. The recycled resources would be woefully inadequate to make anything truly useful out of.
Also, this would help the Devs as far as the Database is concerned. Assuming that Each item recieves an entry on a table that holds all the stats for that item...You would have entries for each "Generic" resources that was /salvaged. As we know, resources are stackable.
And, also using that same reasoning for weapons or crafted items, you would have 1 entry on a table for EACH crafted item. There are literally thousands of crafted newbie items sitting on bazaars on each galaxy. No offense to newbies, i was one too, but no one wants these items. So they sit on the Bazaar and take up Database space.
Someone buys up say....1000 newbie crafted items and goes to /salvaging.
That's 1000 records wiped out of the item table and cleaned off the bazaar. After /salvaging, the character has the generic resources in his inventory. I'm assuming that resources in an inventory are merely pointers to a table that holds all resource types and stats. This pointer only shows the quantity. So, the item table is smaller now, the character table only got 1 entry added to it, and the Database is, overall, smaller now.
In summery. /salvage command would wipe out large amounts of wasted database records and add only one or two records to a character's inventory table. We have a use for all the old, junked, and derelict items, and we can add to the economy with recycling centers to pay non-artisans to turn in their junk loot.
It'sa win/win situation for everyone!
rodian you are a genious...
the idea really has merrit... i really agree with that whole thing about the cdefs sittin on the bazaars though nothing gets me more irritated than to check the bazaar and see littaraly thousands of cdef weapons that no one has a use for other than maybe smugglers that are lookin to practice their slicing skills... im a weaponsmith so i had to go through all the junk items you make on the engineering skills... most people dont buy them i can tell ya now... even at 100 creds a piece for a good cdef (over 50 max damage) they just sit there for a long time and then eventually you can make better stuff... so you pull them off the bazaar and destroy them... and then you were better off practising it cause you got nothing for it...
Id be Curious to see if the devs think this may be a good idea that would be doable...
I just had a thought regarding the "generic steel", "generic fiberplast", etc. it's been suggested that the /salvage command would generate.....
Since this would be a static, permanently available resource, a schematic could be made using strictly "generic" resources and it would be usable "forever". Within the limitations of the number of units it was designed for, of course. But someone about to abandon Novice Architect, for example, could make 100's of schematics using generic resources and be able to continue to crank out walls for resale for a long, long time!
Dunno if this would be a "feature" or an "exploit", but it's something to consider for game balance purposes....
