I once paid a friend to monitor my harvesters in a far off place, right near his own. He put up a radioactive harvester, I paid him 4cr/unit to use that power for my 2 harvesters, plus the maintenance he put in. Everyone was happy--it was, if I recall, an 80-something concentration of Wigeride and I harvested enough in thosefew days to last me a looong time--and I never had the hassle of going up there daily. He made money for doing something he was already gonna do anyway. Maybe a setup like this with someone you trust would work.

The 'cost' of harvestors is a non argument now. You can go to an Artisan Mission Terminal and with a few refreshes pick up a couple of missons to survey the resource you are already mining. You can earn the money to pay maintenance just by getting a misson on your way out there and doing a quick survey. How hard is that ?

Sampling for small amounts is fine and if its only small amounts your after then I have found that the extra resources you get for spending the extra action are worth it. If you feel you 'have' to go afk then you aren't only sampling small amounts.

After all it is called 'Sampling' not Mining and it was never meant to be the main way an Artisan gets resources. In Beta I submitted the idea of making sampling a bit like playing battleships where you work through a grid picking regions and trying to 'hit' deposits of ores or whatever. Unfortunatley I guess that wasnt what they wanted to do but i reckon it would have been a bit more fun.

Besides with some lateral thinking I am sure you can get around this. Maybe you just macro a /stand;/sample;/pause xx;/sit thats only long enough for one sample then repeat. Not tried this as i dont have any need cause my harvesters provide more resources than I can use as it is.

I am on Shadowfire and while every other architect is trying to rake in profit selling small houses for 13-20k, i'm selling mine for below 10k. The exp is all that concerns me. 10k per house does not equal enough creds to keep 4-5 harvesters and 2 wind gens alive.

I hope I'm not the only one who sees how ridiculous this statement is! Let me rephrase it for you:

"I sell houses for 10k, but I can't run my harvesters on only 10k, so they need to make it cheaper for me to get resources."

Duh. Sell your houses for 13k and your problems are solved, aren't they?

**edit** Philomorph, you beat me to it.

It really takes someone with a turd for a brain to say something stupid like "I hate the fact that I'm broke...why am I broke, when I sell everything below cost???"

Duuuuuuuuh...

And the Doc who can't run "the circuit" every day, don't. Wait for a resource shift. Find the new "rare" material you need. Find a spot for it. Plant down a ton of Harvesters. Power and Maintain them for 3-4 days. After 3-4 days, find the new "rare" material that JUST spawned...pick up your harvesters, and place them there.

Rinse and repeat.

Sorry, Doc, but there are 2 Master Doctors (1 of whom is a Master Combat Medic too) in my PA, and they run "the circuit" quite constantly. How do you plan on surviving without a steady flow of resources? Where do you plan on getting your stims?

If you don't want to run "the circuit", then just buy your stims off someone else...problem solved, stop whining.

Folks...like I've said before...Artisan is a speed bump. You can get through Engineering 4 by farting 12 times in rapid succession. The hard part will come when you try to enter a REAL profession. Look at the turd-brained Architect that posted on this thread...she's a prime example of an AFK-macro-addict who has no clue how to play the game. Once you enter a real crafting profession, if you don't have a solid infrastructure, you're DEAD. DEAD DEAD DEAD. You will not compete with someone like me who mines up 30-40K worth of resources a day. I *BUY* another 50K a day. Think of how much STUFF I can put out, when I set my factories to work. Do you honestly think that some AFK macroer getting 1K of resources a night is going to touch me? Or any other Elite crafter with a sound infrastructure?

Those of you who have already experienced the wonders of Mining installations, I applaud you...you are much smarter than a lot of us.

The window comes up, but I dont think you stop sampling. I could be wrong. It would be worth experimenting.

Ironically, sampling is so slow now that I dont need a macro to do it continuously.

I never sample in general, but occasionally I need to getsome units of something I dont have to make an item and I dig around where I am to get what I need.

OK, I've kept my mouth shut, but this is about my limit. For all you anti-macro idiots, if you don't like it don't do it! Leave the rest of us alone. I happen to like Prospecting, being out in the weeds by myself. I think I'll change my name to Harvester 0 and then I can AFK, OOG(out of game) sample all I want. This isn't a contest, so put your ego's in neuteral and and let ppl play the game the way that want to play it. My money is the same as yours is, the amount may be greater or lesser. If you canrationalize harvesters over akf macroing, I'd really like to hear about it.

First off you have completley missed my point. I don't sell my houses at 13k because A) even the current market is under that price. The average small house goes for 10k. and B) like i said clearly above, i don't care about the profit.

If i ask 13k for a house, people will say nevermind and go buy one at 10k from someone else....so no, that doesn't solve my problems, in fact that would create more problems.

I never said they need to make it cheaper for me to get my resources, you are reading way too much into my statement. I was not complaining. I was making a point. It is not economically viable to depend on Harvesters ALONE.

Most every architect i've ever met depends not only on their harvesters but also their hand sampling!!!

Everyone is so quick to beat down and dismiss everyone else. I don't even have the will to defend myself anymore. Flame me all you like, but i think you should re-read my posts and take a more simplistic look at them. I'm not whining. I'm not complaining. I am stating facts based on my experience. If you see it different, good for you.

AS for the turd for brain comment....seriously pal. Grow up. It doesn't even sound like you read my posts in the first place. You just read the posts talking about mine and made a comment. *shakes his head*

Flame on....i'm outta here.

Who's whining? I said I don't WANT to do the circuit. It does not fit into my play desires. I would rather spend 2 days out of the month doing the circuit and then playing the rest of the month, then doing the harvester shuffle. I get enough resources to satisfy my needs the way I choose to gather resources. Key here is MY playstyle and desires. If I don't want to run a harvesting business, I shouldn't have to. It isn't optimal game time for me.

So, I use the ingame tools to optimize my play time, to play MY way. After all, it IS about MY play time. From my perspective.

hey I won't bitch as much if there were LARGER then small flora farms.... once medium and/or large flora farms are put out... sure.. I'd gladly NOT AFK sample... but until then.. I NEED the extra sampling for skilling up. Chef's need soo many different resources it's not funny... and I can EASILY go through over 5000 wheat in 2 hours. 5000 wheat is a bit over 3 harvesters per night.

Was this thread started by someone complaining about macro harvesters? I don't think so, it was someone complaining that the mean evil devs were trying to take away something that was never intended. I don't want to get into the argument on whether they intended to let people stay connected and sample all day while they worked and slept, that is an incredible waste of time to argue if you read the EULA. I don't really care if you work around the barriers they put in place, just don't come here and whine when they put more barriers in your way. Macro sampling was intended. AFK all day macro sampling was NOT intended.

Little E, I know 6 Master Architects. Not 1 even knows HOW to macro sample. Maybe you're on the server for special children, but I don't see how an Architect can even hope to survive macro sampling. You get what, 2000, maybe 3000 resources a night? Heck, let's be generous and say 5K a night.

A Heavy Mining Mineral Installation is roughly 28K resources. That's 5 days worth of hand-sampling.

A PA Hall is 64K resources. That's about 2 weeks of hand-sampling.

Now, put down 10 Personal Harvesters on a 50% spot. That's 14,400 resources every 24 hours. Small Generic House is 3,400 resources. Your cost is roughly 1.1 credits per unit of resource using your harvesters. If you sell a house at 10K, you pay for 1 day's worth of resources. However, you can make *4* houses with the resources you just collected.

An Equipment Factory is 13,400 resources. You can make 1 in a day. You can easily sell it at 40K. Look, you just paid maintenance for 4 days. Oh, wait, and you get 26K XP for making it, plus another 26K when it's placed? That's just speculation based off theresources the schematic takes...I'm probably wrong on the XP part.

The best Architects I know started off by building for themselves. They build harvesters, place them, have friends place them as well. They make their houses and get their infrastructure going. You go up Installations first, you make yourself Medium Harvesters, then build all the way up to Heavy ones (1 Heavy rakes in about 5000resources on a 50% spot in 24 hours...with 1 Factory and 1 House, you can have 7 Heavies working for you, pulling in 35K worth of resources a day)

The point is, not only is relying on hand-sampling horribly slow, but once you have an infrastructure that works FOR you, hand-sampling is insignificant. I know I'm a total troll, but I'm just telling you that you're just shooting yourself in the foot by not taking the time to try and work your infrastructure (oh, and you can always take 2 quick survey missions out to your harvesters).
