Thread: Proposed change to harvesters for 8/20 takes all the challenge and risk out of mining.
Ay man, the only difference is you keep excess cash over the redeed maintenance cost and you keep power... Now that mini-game you enjoy so much was a tremendous waste of power to me, I would constantly rip out harvesters to sick a new spot and lose that power. I don't see a **edit** thing wrong with letting me keep that juice. Net result is lower prices to my customers.
Whew..I want to thank everyone for their comments. I can be very grumpy sometimes--I apologize if anything I said offended.
First off, I want to qualify that I am a miner--not a combatant with mining as a side. I've picked various skill branches to accent this profession.
Secondly, I see a diconnect in the way most people mine, and the way I mine. I take 15 minutes a day, and pop open my survey tools to find out what has spawned. I write down the new spawn dates. I never ever tend my harvesters on a daily basis(unless I happen to be in the area). Once I knew the dates, I never had to because I could put 5 days worth of MP and power, walk away and be content. After the 5 day safe period, that's when the speculation began. ei--wow, there's 20 medium harvesters on this Doonium deposit--will the market and the resource hold out over the speculatin period?
Now people will say they don't have time to play everyday, that the former system was not for casual play. I say, it very well could be. I can usually spare 15 minutes in a day to log on, even if I can't play. That's enough time to check resources. If I absolutely couldn't check for a few days, then any resources spawned during that time were entirely 'at risk'. I would steer away from them unless it was something really rare.
Lately I've played a lot (beforeclasses at Universitystart)--but 70 % of my time involves exploring SWG, not mining. So I don't buy the casual player argument. In fact, I was able to survive major connectivity issues (see my posts in tech support) using this method because I was only able to connect infrequently.
I new I wanted to be a miner right from launch. I built a fireworks company into a mini-mining empire (lol, as much as one person can be an 'empire'). This change may be good for most artisans--good for the time being. Here are some of my predictions:
Power prices will plumet.
Resource prices will drop.
Master crafters (weaponsmiths, armorsmithes, etc) prices will remain constant.
Those are pretty easy predictions to make. The more difficult predictions I will save for myself (and my cohorts)
This is economic PvP after all, and I have to base my business on some secrets.
Happy crafting!
As it was, there were two options...spend at least an hour each day running to every harvester to pay them off, or lose large amounts of credits.
It wasn't a mini-game in the slightest. It didn't involve risk and challange, it just made it hard for people who didn't want to log on and run around every single night. It was a meaningless time sink; making lots of money for SOE, but preventing players from hunting, crafting, and socializing,
It would be cheaper just to let the harvesters die, but it's worth a small number of credits to free me up to do things I want to do, and I don't feel like I have to log on for a bit every single night or lose credits.
The real risk and challange is in speculating on the market; should I sell my extinct 950 OQ copper now, lest a better one spawn tomorrow, or should I hold on to it longer, and charge more due to demand?
