Thread: Free items are killing us!
I know this is more of a power gamer view, but I think it works well for anyone trying to gain xp, at any speed. I mean, do you really want to give something away for free when, in the same amount of time, you could build 4 more of the same item? Yielding 2.5x more xp in the same amount of time? I know the games not about building levels as fast as possible, but I think even novice artisans would like to get to the higher professions sooner rather than later.
Right now I'm on Chilastra with a nice customer base. I just sell ware word of mouth, highly tricked out cdef's for 500 a pop. As far as the bazaar is concerned, it sucks imo. The weapons I listed yesterday are 8 pages deep in the bazaar. Sorts only work based on what page your looking at and not on everything that's in the bazaar.
For those of you giving away the stuff you grind, I think you are just wasting crafting time. Giving away decently crafted stuff is also a waste. If someone has no money, tell them to spend 15 minutes running some delivery missions. In 15 minutes I can make 1000+. It's not like money is hard to come by if you want to buy something under 1000.
Overall, I think there are enough smart people out there able to recognize the value of quality work. Some of my clientel are already tipping me more than I ask for. I'll rely on word of mouth from now on for sales, at least until the bazaar system becomes better.

Free items are a good idea. Newbies don't have tons of cash and you don't have to fleece them for their starting 250 just so they can get a weapon that barely does better than the default. Unless your materials are so good that your CDEFs are doing amazing min-max, dont put it on the bazaar cause that is just clutter.
If you want to sell weapons, wait until you actually have something worth buying before placing your product on the bazaar.
You can get a prime rib at Denny's, or you can get a prime rib at The Outback, but they aren't the same thing, same way with CDEF weapons and bone armor rogu32. Higher level crafters who experiment while making them can make weapons and armor that are far superior to other items with the exact same name.

I hit Master Artisan last night and I have been able to make some good money up to now. I have given away some items, sold some for cheap, and sold some for a very nice price. What people don't seem to understand yet is that the quality of the item is MUCH more important than what the item is. Take the CDEF weapon for example.
Started Weapon = 17-35 damage
At Eng 1 - I pretty much destroyed/gave them away. (19-40 damage)
At Eng 2 - I could experiement and I found a good source of high quality copper. The damage got up into the 50s so I started charging 250 credits per weapon. I sold a ton of them between Eng 2 and Eng 4.
Now - I now use very high quality components and max out experimentation. The end result is 28-63 damage with a 3.3 or faster speed. I have been able to sell these on the bazaar for 1K each.
So a CDEF weapon could be a 17-35 weapon with a 4.x speed, or a 28-63 damage weapon with a 3.3 speed. That is a HUGE difference in quality.
Another good example is bone armor. I check the bazaar and see items that have been on there for two days now but they are crap base pieces that have not been experimented on(protection something like 11/%/8%/8%) that people are trying to sell for 2K a piece. I can now make bone that is around 23%/13%/13% and I am selling them extremely fast at 1.5K a piece. Considering it only takes 150 units of materials to make a standard piece, I am getting a nice profit.
I guess what I am trying to say is that at least at this point the economy is actually artisan friendly. Artisan's just need to understand how to price/postion their items better. There is nothing wrong with making low quality bone armor for instance, just don't price it to where it competes with the high quality stuff !
And when all else fails, make sure you educate the players out there. There are a lot of newbies running around right now =) For instance I saw a shout yesterday from a guy saying he would be willing to pay a lot of money for a better than CDEF weapon. I sent him a tell just to confirm he meant better than an experimented CDEF and he asked "What is that ?". I quickly found out he had the 17-35 starter pistol and had played for days with it and was up to Master Pistol. He was floored when I showed him a 27-57 pistol I had in inventory because he had been asking for a good pistol for a long time and no one bothered to ask him before me.
Not sure what it is all worth, just wanted to put in my 2 cents.
Good luck to you all, and if you are on Radiant, give me a tell sometime !

I'll undersell any cartel or your money back, guaranteed! We've got crazy mad prices here! Don't throw your money away buying from some syndicate, give it to the genuine small businessman! Come on down!
Seriously, price fixing ain't gonna work unless you've got some sort of real economic leverage against people outside your cartel.
They will all die if they don't join us. And we will keep hunting them every time they clone. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Real economic pressure against a small business can be created by forcing prices below their ability to run harvesters. If you have a cartel, you can undersell him at every turn.
Actually, as a merchant, I love it when I see artisans giving things for free. If the stuff they give away is half decent, I actually buy it for then on the cheap and then resell it.
However, many of you have been saying that you have nothing worth building as an early architect and this is simply not true. They key word is consumables. The best ones, for the early artisan is the coupler, travel biscuits, and exo-protien wafer.
The coupler is the best, because for just 10 resources you get 40XP. Also, it is a very sellable item (as long as your market is educated). If someone has a gun, there is no downside (other than cost, so try to keep the price between 50-75) to having a powerup in the gun. Any seasoned figher will ALWAYS have a few powerups on hand. The coupler is best because it has the most understandable bufsbyrandomly procing (min damage boost, max damageboost, speed boost, and special action reduction).
A "decent" coupler will boostits primary stat by at least 15%. A "good" coupler will boost its primary stat by at least "25%".
Even more valuable, and less understood (so you really need to educate) are the travel biscuits and exo-protien wafers. Travel biscuits buf constition. Exo-protien wafers buf constitution AND willpower. In laymans terms, eat a travel biscuit and your health will regen faster for a couple of minutes. Eat an exo-protein wafer and your helath AND mind regenerate faster for about three minutes. Again, any fighter type who knows his salt would NEVER go out into the field without some sort of food bufs.
Now to make these items you will need to experminent, so don't bother making them until you have eng I.Also, make sure to use the best quality items you can.Your training path should be eng I, dom I, and then whatever else you want. I always train all the way up in both eng and dom for the experimantation points.
As a pure novice, make some artisan starter kits (general crafting unit + mineral survey) and make all survey tools for yourself. Also make some fireworks (I just bought a bunch for my store opening) -- as they are a fun item. Get together with some entertainers and do a performance with fireworks.
Now, if an artisan is doing all this, making quality items AND STILL giving them away for free. This doesn't really hurt the economy. Walk up to your fellow artisan, offer 10cr a piece for the items and then you can sell them elsewhere at a huge profit.
Also, make friends with scouts. Buy resources from them. And throw in a coupler the first couple of times to get them hooked. They will become a loyal customer.
I feel that quality items should be sold. But if I make a junk item, I'd rather give it to a new player than destroy it. The Bazaar markets are already filled up with crap. Total, worthless crap. I don't care if that crap is priced at 10 creds or 100 creds, it's still crap.
I take pride in my work. I'm not going to charge anyone for anything that I wouldn't use myself.
If you're having a problem with money, get novice marksman and join a group. I make plenty of cash that way."
This whole idea is contradicting .. you take pride in your work .. but you give away all your crap (which is marked with your craftsman's name)
If its crap .. destroy it. someone who uses 'pistol by Plier' and sees that they get 75 damage off bodyshot II as it drains their action bar to 1/2 .. is one customer who will NEVER actually BUY a pistol from you later.
The stigma of crap associated with your name is going to be hard to overcome.
I never *give* anything to anyone who isnt in my PA.
not even training. its just bad practice .. soon people will EXPECT training & items for free. Why shuold i be expected to train someone in expert pistol for NOTHING .. when I had to pay 3000 credits to get it ? Why shuold I give evena newb CDEF to a new player for NOTHING when it took me time to get the resources to build (and experiment) on it ?
the real problem is grinding. People can't actually PLAY the game .. they have to powerlevel .. so the stuff they are making has no value to THEM .. let alone a potential customer. its all a numbers game.To the same effect if you GIVE someone something .. they don't know the value of a credit. Trust me .. all the folks who are /tipping 50 credits to an entertanier who heals 200 BF are the people who were GIVEN all their starting equipment. [and you can BET they will be the first people with a house/factory because they bank all their $$ .. and NO .. they won't let you use it for free.]
what do you expect with all the GXP it takes to get novice...we have to make items no one wants are needs...i could destroy all the crap i am having to make or i could give it away and get the UXP....
if there was no UXP and instead we got points for experimenting you would see people building fewer but higher quality items...but UXP encourages people to give the stuff away
