Thread: AFK Macro Samplers Consider Yourself Warned
When I first heard about setting up scripts to macro sample, the first thing I did was look over the complete TOS and software agreement. In that, I found nothing that remotely applied to setting up a macro, then walking away. If they want to slap that in there, I don't have a problem with that. Then it applies to everyone, and so be it.
Ithere are some inherent risks to afk sampling though. It's possible (though from my experience) unlikely) that a agressive MOB couldbe roaming, come across you, and strike you down.Granted, it's unlikely that would happen thrice in 10 minutes (or whatever it is now), but possible. It'd be a pretty tough experience to wake up in a cloning chamber minus all your stuff when you came home/woke up/whatever.
But it does seem odd to me that your character can by far sample more, and faster, than a harvester can. Not to mention I don't need topay credits and power to myself to sample. I decided to set up a few harvesters yesterday to see if I can make it profitable, but I'm leaning towards it not be. I actually think I'd make more creds just setting up a bunch of wind harvesters and selling the wind energy.
It doesn't make much sense that youcan run out in a field, and one guy can just get ungodly amounts of resources. I mean, I can't personally go out into a steel mine (much less a field) and grab up enough metal to make a windmill. It makes more sense to be able to survey to find the the material, sample a couple pieces to check the quality, then place a harvester to mine/gather the resource.
Granted, that would be a Catch 22. If you had to have a harvester to get metal, how would could you get enough metal to make a harvester. But still, the current sampling system seems a little broken. The moving resources seem to try address that a bit, but it still doesn't make sense that materials materialize (no pun intended) and dematerialize in around a week.
Ok, I've tangented enough. Basically, if Macro Sampling is an exploit, post where someone from SOE has stated so, or where it's listed in the TOS/Software agreement.
Um...I afk sample while I do housework. I have a macro that only uses what was put in the game by the devs, and it can run for hours. Since I use no third party program or hardware, I'm not exploiting, so feel free to petition me any time. BTW, I operate out of Dearic on Talus. I can't build anywhere NEAR as close to the city as you can on say, Tatooine. According to your logic, I should be petitioning all those people who build right outside of Bestine since I can't do that. They must be exploiting a bug! ![]()
You know, if other peoples' behaviours within a game bother you so much, you can always turn the game off and *gasp* go outside...but the Real World has no general 'Mommy' figure for you to go crying to so I guess that's why you're posting here.
Well I thought it wasn't a problem to macro sample and I thought it was totally allowable. Holocron mentioned it on a thread that mose people automate it anyway. Then I saw another thread listed below where he said it was the wrong way to play and that they were basically going to nerf it somehow. I personally thing that it should be allowed. Why make me sit there and see I failed. I got 10 recources from a good sample for a freaking hour or more. I quit crafting cause it was boreing as hell and thats because I used macro sampling. Now that you have to wait longer its sucks even more. Oh yea they added more events to sampling to improve it oooohhh fun fun I'm still not moveing and seeing the same animation. Fun Fun Fun!!! Oh and now they nerf increasing missions in droids. I never used it cause I didn't know about it but how is the bad? They are just trying to make us waste more time so we can keep the 14.95 month flowing!! Why else would they increase times and frown on small items that increase are enjoyment.
Baaahhh Humbug ( This is the first online mulitplayer RPG I have played and I"m getting frustrated) Don't get me wrong I love the game but they keep getting rid of things that aren't problems instead of fixing things that are!!!

A couple of patches ago, SOE fixed the bug that keeps you from being auto-logged out for inactivity if you have a macro running. As far as I'm concerned, that they tried to fix this comfirms what I have always believed: designing a macro to run for hours, while you are AFK, is an exploit. You are not supposed to be doing this. If you are doing this, you are either taking advantage of a bug you found (instead of reporting it) or you are using a 3rd party utility to fool the game into think you're not AFK. Either way, it's a big major EULA violation.
Yesterday, I found two friends AFK and sampling. No big deal. Except that they were still AFK, and still sampling, when I logged off three hours later. At no point during that time did they respond to /tell, nor did they respond - even to an old friend - to me in spatial chat.
Effective immediately, no matter how friendly you are, no matter how many favors you've done me, if I find you AFK and sampling, I will check back in 20 minutes to half an hour. If you are still on auto-pilot, and are still not responding to /tell, then I am reporting you to the GMs as a possibleexploiter. Presumably they will take their time trying to get you to respond - after which time they will take appropriate action. Very likely, the least they will do is force your character to log off. I will keep doing this for as long as it takes until this abuse stops.
Any action the GMs take will be your fault, not mine or theirs. And I don't even want to hear anybody whine, "Who are they hurting?" I'm getting absolutely tired of competing against people who are getting their resources for free while I pay out about 1.5 to 2 credits per unit for materials and for the power to run the harvesters. Nor do I want to hear anybody say that if I don't want them to out-compete me, I should do what they're doing. I'm not an exploiter.
This is the only warning I will give.
Other people, especially those in other towns and on other servers, please feel free to do likewise.
My guess is that you were made fun of at school alot?? hehe, jk... But honestly sir (or maam) have you nothign better to do with your time than to go around and try to screw over other players. The term Lassiez-Faire comes to mind. If you don't know what that means, pick up a government book. Anyway, please, if you have this kind of time to spend on endeavors such as nosing in EVERYBODY else's business, how about you instead submit an application to SOE so you can go around and find REAL bugs in the game. Spend your time wisely, don't let your superiority complex about your friends not talking to you get you down. You want to be helpful? Be helpful, dont' wreck things for others.
A smart person, lol. (IMHO)
Oh and by the way, are you a Dev? No, so whose authority is this "warning" based on...and i wish i had a third party program to macro, it would have saved me the 20 minutes it took to make my macro IN GAME!!!! and im spent.
BradBrad,
I wish you luck in your endevor, but until the Dev's take a clear stance against AFK macros your pleas will fall on deaf ears. The DEV's current reponse is more to the tune of "we want to make it HARDER to AFK/macro, but we don't want to eliminate it becuase then people will use third party software hacks which SOE can't control, as opposed to the ingame system which we can".
BTW, the solution to this problem is simple:
1. Every square inch of outdoor land should be subject to having some sort of slow moving agressive creature wandering by, even if it only happens once every hour or so.
2. To sample you need to unequip your weapon and equip your sample tool.
3. If you enter combat, any sample tool you currently have equiped is automatically unequiped.
Thus once you are attacked, all AFK activity stops.
The real downside to this suggestion is that it will likely open the door to the equiping of crafting tools, which could eliminate the simultainious use of multiple tools, which many people currently do.
Dude, pull your head out of your ass.
If SOE didn't want you macro sampling they would make /sample not run in a macro.
Just because I can leave my gaming rig running all day and night and sample doesn't mean I do. Sometimes I'll macro sample for a while so I can get a bit of fiberplast to make stimpacks, but come on. What is wrong with you?
I'm able to sample indefinitely now due to the sample rate nerf. Prior to the change to 25 sec. between samples, I could go for 20 minutes before needing to rest. Now, my mind and action pools regen 100% before my next sample. As far as getting booted, if you sample in town, you get booted after 45 min of inactivity. But, if you are in the wild, you don't get booted.
Since the devs totally nerfed sampling, I find it hard to see this as a exploit. I /bugged that I could sample forever when I first noticed it, but then I realized they patched sampling. Apparently this is a feature now for those that have stats that allow it. Thus, macroing seems like a trivial concern, if it is a concern at all.
