The novice trainers give you a ship if you don't have one (you might have to ask them for it), but you won't be hyperspace capable until you move to a tier-2 ship. That you will have to pay for.

now that even the starter ships have hyper drives yeah its worth it just in saved travel time alone.

I read something on the screen about that. May just have to buy the upgrade to get some easier planet travel.
Yes, absolutely. Saves a LOT of time travelling while surveying, among other things. It gets me back home very fast to drop off what I harvested. $30 is a small price to pay for such convenience in this game. I'm very happy with JTL just for this function. My alt doesn't have it, and I miss it whenever I use it.

It is worth it, but I resent having to pay $30 for 2 lines of code. The only really useful part of the expansion is being able to travel quickly. But this is like them taking away vehicles, then charging everyone $30 for the 'vehicle expansion'. They should have just made all the starports (and shuttleports) like Theed. Probably would have taken 5 minutes for one of their programmers. Instead, they charge everyone $30. They're not stupid - just evil.
As for space, it gets boring. Fun for a couple days though. But not worth $30. If you're really into space shooters, then maybe you'll enjoy it. Some people really like the space PVP. The graphics and UI are like an early 1990's game like Wing Commander though. Maybe it's the big square stars in the background - I'm not sure. Your money would be better spent on a late 1990's game like Freelancer if you're thinking about buying just for the space part.
