Thread: Return of the Miner (Opinion poll)
The profession was originally cut because it did nothing. All the mods were essentially "harvest a little more resource". There were no active skills and abilities. Personally, I think it was a good decision.
That being said, I think there is room to make a more active miner profession.
1) A discipline that revolves around repairing harvesters to offset maintenance costs.
2) Disciplines that allow remote management of harvesters
3) Advanced disciplines to bring up regional survey results on the planetary map.
All these things could add to ACTIVE abilities to miners, and make it worthwhile. As it was before, it was redundant and the choice to cut it was a good one.

So, yeah. I REALLY want to see a mining profession.
I'm doing pretty well as a miner without hte skillset. I kinda like not having to devote a master line with all the extra points to something that I can clear hundreds of thousands of credits weekly on. It leaves me room for things like being master of couple combat skills so I can get to my harvesters easily without any real threats.
While I like being a miner here, and liked it in UO I like having the skillpoints more compared to the 'profession bonuses' that I've seen brandied about. It'd take some pretty nifty addons to be worth it and if they're too high then every crafter will add them and we're still at square one.
Since Beta 1 I always took up the mining tree and found it a really good way to make a living. I have done the same in UO, I mined massive material from ore to lumber and sold my goods. Look at SWG. EVERYTHING that you craft is dependant on resources, be it mine from the ground or tear froma carcass. To craft you must mine. A miner would be so good and you could make them do so much. Have miners able to craft mining droid parts or make unique self effiicent harvesters. make them find that rare hidden ore, or construct special survey equipment. Q said a while back that he found the miner an interesting second skill tree to take up on. Why did they can it? well the skill point cap and too many trees. They wanted people to explore more options.
I say redo and bring back the miner. Would i invest in being one? Oh yea you bet

I am all for the return of the Miner profession. I currently spend way more of my time managing harvesters than crafting and would rather either have the ability to hone my skills as a Miner/Tailor or just buy what I need from a Miner who can get the stuff effectively.
I have found that the prices for resources are really high right now because of the difficulty and expense in running a large number of harvesters. If the Miner was much more efficient at gathering resources, it would bring down prices, encourage more player-to-player dependence, and build a stronger economy. We have the crafters and the consumers, we are just missing the suppliers. Miner would be a good thing.
When I first started to even think about SWG a year ago, if you would have asked me if I would be a miner I would have laughed my head off! Even in Beta I was all combat - strike that I played an Artisan for about 15 minutes.
But something has changing in the live product (or Beta 4 as I like to call it), I have really taken to enjoying surveying! I started as an Artisan on Wanderhome in order to help my PA (TCON) and we all just mined the Cr*p out of the land for the first week to get our PA Hall up - first on Wanderhome BTW!
Well now the PA is up and we have about 50 homes, and I'm doing some scouting, and Pistol work, but I still really enjoy surveying. Last night I got three harvester's up. It's a real challenge to place them and maintain them, it's tedious in a way, but also quite rewarding.
For right now I'm just hording big quantities of material, knowing that they will be in demand, using it myself - for some simple crafting, or helping out friends with gifts of material. But, I would be very interested to see if the market stabilizes enough for resources (or they become constrained enough) that a Miners services would become necessary.
If this is the case, I'd be open to calling myself a miner!

But yes, I'd like to see the return of an Elite miner, with expanded skills.

The economy could benefit from it, in my opinion.
