Houdani's Vote = Keep it at Master Artisan with one big caveat ...

... make the paint job last indefinately. Make it so that the paint won't fade until I seek out another Master Artisan and have them mix it up for me again.

Essentially, it's the same as a mount. Once the saddle's put on, it stays on. Do the same thing for paint.

FYI everyone, the devs announced they are changing to use option 2. No need to keep voting.

Honi Sonegal, Scylla MA, here. Voting for option #2. Otherwise, I think a lot more customers may end up at the bottom of the big imaginary Sarlaac (sp?) pit. (Pit idea stolen from a Tailor thread.)

I would definitely agree with the second option. I admit to mainly being an Artisan for the sake of possibly becoming a Jedi (I didn't want to ditch my BH to become an Entertainer ), but I can see that the first option would be most annoying for those of you dedicated to the profession and already busy keeping up with resources, harvesters, factories, and everything else that comes with running a shop. I'd hate to see "/tell hell" increased even more than it is for you guys to come perform a service that could easily be handled with a kit.

I'd suggest having a kit with a limited number of uses, like 5, and with a duration on how long the paint lasts. Not an excessively long, or short period of time, but say a week before you start noticing that it's fading? Would it be way too difficult to adjust this according to attacks? Say, a MOB attacks as you fly by and does damage to your paint in addition to damage against your vehicle. In that case, the length of time could be lengthened to account for "battle damage".

Anyway, no matter the method of wear, it'd be a good idea to have a kit that has about 4-6 charges so users could upkeep their paint job as they go, and be able to change it on a whim without having to waste their time chasing down an MA to do it, or wasting the time of the MA to come and peform a service. Besides that, I'm rather cautious about the /consent method, as I can't help but see it being abused.

As a Master DE (the only other profession that deals in customiztion of products after production) I say go with 2. The only droids I customize are my own, my friends, and those that have just been purchased. almost nobody seeks a DE to get a paint job redone, I think I've been asked twice by strangers. Plus you waste a large number of kit charges trying to get the "look" players want because they can't see the changes.

If players can use the kits themselves they will actually sell.

Since choice #1 gives us the most flexibility, I would vote for #1.

If it doesn't work out, it can (you promise?) be changed.

HOWEVER:

1) Most customization interfaces/tools have not performed well.

a) While I look at the time 'chatting up' the customer while performing serves a positive chance to educate and sell the customer, most crafters view it as wasting time.

b) If the customization resullts are not displayed for the customer to view, multiple charges are wasted at the cost of the crafter.

c) Running through every single style/color for a customer trying to decide what they want is a time sink. Time sinks do not benefit the crafter or the customer.

d) While all tools are utilitarian, many have such limited scope they are quite useless - droid customization, 1 charge

2) Realistically speaking, services have never provided reasonable income.

a) Customers don't want to pay for 'mistakes', or what they don't want, even if it's their fault they did not receive what they wanted.

b) Many people do not expect to pay for services. Regardelss of the fact that tools cost resources and time to make (and use), players think that crafters should provide services free of charge as a........service.

c) Historically speaking, in the SWG universe, items sales have been the staple of the player economy, not services. Services are usually charges fora pittance, if at all.

d) Customization must provide a LASTING benefit if they are going to justify their cost - droid customization.

"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, How can we do this and not make another EQ? We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."
