Thread: How many artistians would rather buy their resources than go harvest/survey for them?

I was thinking that there is a nice market for resources

Instead of the rest of you artistians surveying/harvesting resources, would you rather just buy them off of the bazzar or out of my own shop?

No more running around all over the planet to find that resource, no more maintenace costs on harvesters, no more risking your hide to go place a harvester. Just pop into the bazar or my personal store. Plus I would be stocking more than just minerals and gas, I should be able to stock bone, hide and meat as well.

One stop shopping.

How many would rather do that than survey/harvest? Saves more time to grind away those XP.

What would be fair market for that? 4-5cr/resource?

I'd pay 4 cr per resource, though as an architect, I'd prefer to get discounts on large volumes (10's of K of material per day)

I sure would like to skip the part of my day where I risk my life to pick up some stock.
But until I'm filthy rich.....it ain't gonna happen.
What would be GREAT is if I had a buddy who was say......a brawler or marksman expert with nothing better to do than fight off the beasts that love to chase me around Coronet.

Progenitor-

A better idea would be to stock rare resources from other planets in your shop. "Combat Surveying" seems like a good market. Travel to deathworlds, get the resources, and get back! Bone and hide would also be good to have. The basic resources on planet however are easily harvested/macroed.

About bulk discounts on resources:

I don't think they'll work in the game. Actually, I think the reverse is true - large collections of resources will sell at higher prices per unit. This is because of the much higher difficulty for the supplier in gathering large amounts of resources, and the much greater convenience for the consumer.

Bulk discounts on finished products might show up, since artisans would be willing to make less profit in exchange for the guaranteed sales, but there's no such benefit for resources. I think a pile of 1000 of a high quality metal would be worth far more per unit to a crafter than a pile of 100 would be.

@Qworg :

That was basically what I was thinking. Find the resources that have the best values and offer those for sale - whether they be off-world or not. I hope there is still a market for those resources on-world that are in outofthe way places or dangerous locations.

Plus bone, meat and hides from the scouting would help supplement some of the costs and downtime.

Being a master artisian/scout is easier and more profitable I think than going for one of the elite professions, especially how the market is flooded right now with crafters.

While I agree that the business model is desireable I'm just not making enough/any money with the low end artisan items to use it.

Once I move into high requirment/high demand/high cost items then I'd definately be interested, at the moment I only buy what I cant sample myself (i.e. scout stuff) and then I tend to barter with my survey finding rather than actually pay for it.

I think the problem is the cost. In SWG, a couple of hundred or a thousand units of a resource is relatively time consuming and/or expensive to gather. The same unit of 1000 units only makes a limited amount of goods.

In our real world economy, you have companies that mine redources, others that refine that resource, others that use it, and then sell the finished goods. This works out because it is more efficient for a company to buy metal from a company who either mines or refines it. In the case of SWG it is not that much more efficient than mining it yourself. The quantities in the real world are FAR greater than that in SWG. This drives the price per unit up and cuts into the profits of the artisan. These costs are therefore passed to the consumer.

I would love to see materials much easier to come by. There should always be rare and expensive high quality stuff, but for the most part, it should be cheap. Then I can make equipment for less cost and don't have to sell the finished product for so much.

The other problem is that in a real world economy, people are motivated by largely the same goal, to make money. In our SWG economy, XP is about as valuable, if not more so. So it's hard to compete on even footing if one person is trying to make a profit and the other is trying to make XP and does not care about a profit. This lowers the cost of the similar item and means the other player must earn no profit or loose money just to stay competitive.

There needs to be other motivations in the game that makes things like what you are suggesting a more viable solution. I am not sure how to accomplish that goal. I am sure there is no easy answers.

Bottom line... I would love to be able to buy materials from a "miner". But I do not want to pay a lot for it and have to try and run missions to supplement my income.

I think it would be cool as all hell if one guy mined it, another guy made stuff from it, and another sold it..Everyone getting thier margin along the way. People could truley manfacture in bulk using factories and sell to a distributer who could sell your wares across the galaxy. A good distributer would be a coveted asset. Like getting shelf placement at Wal-Mart. =)

I sell resources at 3 cr per unit,as the resource gets rare i will increase the price.

once a resource has been fully mined a new resource will appear at which time i will lower my price back down to 3 per unit

I wouldn't mind buying imported materials (not native to the planet I'm on), resources I only need once in a while (low grade ore comes to mind), or things that are rare or hard to get.

However, for the bulk resources avaliable on the planet I'm on, I'd rather just run my harvesters.

The number of people who would answer "yes" to this question, will increase as the game ages. For example, right now, I would probably spend more time trying to run missions to make money, than it would take me to harvest the same number of resources.

As I get into elite professions, and start making good stuff I can now make (such as higher quality weapons), that will change, as I can make money faster by just crafting and buying resources...

I would certainly buy resources now, if I could find quality stuff reliably and in bulk. Most of what I see is nearly random, though, with no regard to the stats, so I'm better off running harvesters to ensure I can always get exactly what I need.

What are the massive amounts of resources that an Architect needs?

What are the special/rare animal resources that are needed to make advanced Armour and Clothing?

These are the things I would like to know, but there are so few Masters, or Advanced Characters out there to come up with what prices or resources may be in demand.

My Idea since early Beta has been to be a Fighting Surveyor while working my way up to a smuggler (which is right along the same lines) and procure those rare materials from other planets to sell to private crafters. I think that if done right, it can be an exciting occupation!
