Thread: Avian Meat
Lok is best for quantity (obviously quality varies by server and over time). Perleks, pharples, and flits all drop avian meat.
Pharples are easiest and non-agressive, though they will defend in packs. You can't get pharple missions, but they are relatively common.
Flits are agressive, and other than the giants are pretty easy, but they can be tough as theydefend in packs. If you have a decent pet, like a rock beetle, to control them, they are very manageable. You get about 3K credits for flit missions.
Perleks are agressive, but defend individually. They are about the same difficulty as a sinlge giant flit (meaning that with level 4 in a marksman weapon skill you can handle them as long as you can heal yourself). Pets aren't essential here, but can be handy because occasionally while you are taking one done, another will become interested in you (though this is avoidable if you keep 30+ meters away from the other perleks.
So it sounds to me like I need to spend more time on Lok, may not get the best stuff always but at least I'll have it to craft with.
What is a good source of Avian meat for a weak combat player?
Honestly, you'd probably have better luck getting an answer to this on the Ranger forum, but let me try to give you at least a little something to go on.
First of all, meat shifts just like any other resource. It may seem odd, but the avian meat that the dwarf nuna drops today will probably be different from the meat it will drop in a week, just like the Lokian Wild Wheat that you can harvest today will most likely be different from the Lokian Wild Wheat that you can harvest next week.
Because of this, there's somewhat of a market for people "sampling" animals just like someone would "sample" organics for harvesting. Every so often, old meats will vanish and new ones will appear. If you want to know which animals to harvest, you're going to have to try a few and see what's good or get in touch with someone that knows (like I said, a ranger would probably be a good candidate for this).
One note about this, though. It appears that there is only one type of meat per planet. For example, perleks and flits both drop avian meat on Lok. At any given time, killing a flit will yield the same meat that you'd get for killing a perlek. After the next shift, you'd get different meat, but it would be the same for both flits and perleks. Likewise on other planets. So, you can refer to thing as "Lokian avian meat" or "Corellian Herbivore meat" because all flying creatures on Lok will give you the same avian meat and all herbivores on Corellia will give you the same herbivore meat.
So, with that said, it's very helpful to know which creatures drop large amounts of meat when you go hunting. Once you know that Lokian avian meat is of high quality, for example, you'll want to know which animals to hunt on Lok to get the most meat in the least amount of time. Unfortunately, I'm certainly not the authority on this. But, let me try to give you at least a couple pointers...
On Lok, try Perleks and Flits. Perleks drop 15-20 units of meat and, although aggressive, don't attack in packs. Flits drop 12-15 units of meat (although the giant flits drop 25-30) but, once you shoot one, they'll all come running so be careful with them. If you happen to pass a group of pharples, you can kill them quickly for about 5 units each. They'll attack in a pack, but who's really concerned about a group of runty pharples? ![]()
On Corellia, carrion spats (especially giant ones) are a pretty good target. There is also one called a gungalow (sp?) that's even better.
Unfortunately, that's about all I know about hunting birds. I don't know anything on Tatooine that gives avian meat besides a dwarf nuna.
Try the ranger forum (or find a ranger in game) and see what they've got to say about it.
