Thread: Player to look out for

Considering this is a one player per account per server game, basically a game that is based on in game reputation and that is everything and if you ruin that then your player is essentially ruined or at least should be then I have a player for you.

That player is named Nixx and at least for today his title was Engineer, but he was practicing novice Tailoring skills. What he was doing was undercutting prices of those who sell in the location he came wandering in to. Now I'm in that same are every day and have been there every day since BETA and I make a good living selling all kinds of things, My prices are not too high and they are not too low as if they were I either would not be able to sell things or would not be able to keep things in stock.

When NIXX came walking in selling his stuff at the undercutting price he was selling at, and PLEASE don't get me wrong here was not selling at a hundred or two lower than the rest of us, he was selling at 850 credits lower than the rest of us were, that's apretty significant amount wouldn't you say? So i talked to him and asked him to please not do that and explained why and NIXX agreed not to do that, then right after our conversation he immediately started selling at the same price again. I asked him what he was doing, he said that was a joke and that he was going to just sell on the Bazaar and not sell them in the open again.

Another lie of course as he continued to sell them at the same price, undercutting our prices by 850 credits, I tried to talk to him some more but when I did all I got was more lies. Next thing you know he's looking to buy hides at over the going rate which everyone normally pays, I asked him not to do that because all he is going to do is drive the prices up, something which all of us in the area have been fighting to bring down since the game started. Basically all I got was him bragging about how many credits he has accumulated and how little he cares about the rest of us and that he is there now and this is the way it's going to be and if we don't like it so what etc etc etc.

Now I know it's a free economy, a player driven economy but for 1 person to come into an area that is already well established and to act like this to me tell me he could care less about the people in the area, the people he services or the other people he may be hurting in the process. He's a fly by night person taking advantage of the situation and will be gone sooner than later.

I say that everyone should boycott NIXX and other people like him and start spreading the word about people like him.

What do you say?

I say wait it out. He can't keep that up for long I wouldn't think. Kind of a crappy thing to do but still I guess not much can be done to him other than not buying his items.

Stick it out and see how long he lasts.

Seems like he wouldn't be able to do that for long, operating at such a heavy loss. Unless he had some PA funding his resources or something, in which case the PA probably wouldn't be around for long either. So, he might be able to hurt you in the long run but I'd venture that he wouldn't be around your area in a day or two.

Yes, it is a jerk off kind of thing to do. But it's yet another mirror of things that happen in the real world... companies using funding from other businesses to break into a new market while sustaining heavy losses.

Man, if you want to spend weeks harvesting just so you can build a house with no out-of-pocket cost, then more power to you. My point is, you won't be able to do it often enough to put a dent in the honest market. If someone wants to sell something below cost then fine. Let them put in the man-hours necessary to do it, they're not going to compete with me in terms of volume. In the time it would take you to gather, by hand, all the resources for a house and sell it for 1 credit, a more savvy player would be able to build a number of them and sell them for a decent profit. So, if you have nothing better to do than make macros and pay the monthly fee to run them, then be my guest. If nothing else, at least you'll have 10 billion surveying experience points(but no way to spend them).

apparently the concept of a hypothetical situation is lost on some people.

I'm obviously not going to be building houses by hand. however I'm just saying it COULD be done.

Any crafter who thinks UXP is driving prices down (and I do) should buy as many cheapo items as he can afford and destroy them. I do that habitually to armor pieces priced under 500cr on Bria, so don't expect any UXP there if you are dumping.

Frankly, I'm about ready to play some other profession. Not only is the long slog to Architect killing my interest in the game, but the UXP driven price wars completely destroy any sense of believability in the player economy. It just makes no sense to see raw materials selling for 3cr per unit while many manufactured goods sell for 1-2cr per unit. If the bazaar price cap and sales limits were lifted we MIGHT see some sanity, as players would start to play the arbitrage game. Also, if disassembling for raw materials were an option, many prices would find a floor, quickly, as crafters destroyed objects for their metal, etc. (and bye bye UXP for the cheap sellers...). Most artisans I have met are spending half or more of their time now running Fedex missions to pay for their harvesters. Is this the player economy we've worked so hard to create?

I do get the concept of a hypothetical situation, but you say that since you pay nothing for the resources (apparently you consider the hours upon hours needed for houses), that you could pay 1 cr. and make a profit.

More power to you. But in the meantime, someone's going to sell hundreds of houses in the time you can make 10.

Sure, you'll have 10 credits, but what will the other user have?

Also, Morpheus, you wrote:

"so when I DO start selling stuff, If I'm not using harvestors, I'll be selling for dirt cheap."

Which doesn't sound like a hypothetical situation to me, it sounds like you're thinking that you'll be ahead by doing that. Which is fine, but I think you'll find it to be a big time sink. If you have all that time to spend, then go ahead and do it. And yes, I realized your situation was hypothetical, but if you bring up a hypothetical situation then you must be ready to have it analyzed.

once again, seem above comment on hypothetical situation. you can't really question the concept of a hypothetical situation. The original reason behind this post was that it was unfair to undercut prices. I was merely pointing out that conceiveably you can run without having any costs so it is perfectly understandable that you would offer same quality items at lower prices.

Personally, I will probably never build a house. I'll probably concentrate on making high quality armor and weapon power ups. that is something I can harvest for 5 minutes and sell for a good price. so therefore, the guy using a harvestor is paying 1000 credits a day for an item that only takes a few minutes to gather and build. Who's working at a loss that time? Surely not the guy harvesting by hand.

I will no longer be arguing over the concept of building a house by hand. It was hypothetical and it's moot to argue it

Well said Korcid. I agree totally.

Disassembling would be an excellent skill to have! maybe give it to master artisans..........

uh oh I'm not a master artisan yet crap! gotta go grind!!!!!

I made it to Master Artisan with no grind. I would make quality powerups andsuchand sell them on the bazaar - I have sold nearly every one that I made as well. UXP is nice and all, but to rely on it for anything other than gravy is just rediculous. Everyday I log in I have a couple hundred more crafting xp, but that is no where near enough to do anything.

If someone sells something cheaper - deal with it. You are going to have PAs act just like corporations and try to put solo-artisans out of business because it is easier for them to sell things at a loss. Such is the way of an open market.

My only problem on the bazaar is that it needs to be sorted better - let me look at all of one class of item (regardless of what someone named it) at a time - ie All CDEF Rifles or All Steel. Let people only sell stacks of resources if they are at least 50 or more.
