My idea for a mining profession, if any of the ideas have popped up before I apologise, I haven't trauled the forum at length to check.

Novice Miner

Surface Mining +10

Purify +10

+1 Droid per installation

First Line: Mining Economies of Scale

The miner benefits from reduced unit cost due to the size of his operation.

Mining Economies of Scale I

Reduced power requirement

Mining Economies of Scale II

Reduced maintenance

Mining Economies of Scale III

Reduced power requirement

Mining Economies of Scale IV

Reduced maintenance

Second Line: Surface Mining

An enhanced form of sampling (with coding to prevent afk mining).

Surface Mining I

Surface Mining +10

Increased survey range

Surface Mining II

Surface Mining +15

Increased survey range

Surface Mining III

Surface Mining +20

Increased survey range

Surface Mining IV

Surface Mining +20

Increased Survey range

Third Line: Metallurgy

The metallurgist can purify metals to enhance their properties.

Metallurgy I

Purify +10

Metallurgy II

Purify +15

Metallurgy III

Purify +20

Metallurgy IV

Purify +20

Fourth Line: Droid Mining

Droids can be depostied in harvesting equipment to work underground. Each droid adds 0.5 ber to the installation. The main problem I see is data management, a possible solution being mining droids stacking in the data pad.

Droid Mining I

+1 droid per installation

Droid Mining II

+1 droid per installation

Droid Mining III

+1 droid per installation

Droid Mining IV

+1 droid per installation

Master Miner

Reduced power and maintenance

Surface Mining +25

Purify +25

+1 Droid per installation

*Ground Preparation

*The Miner may prepare the ground before an installation is placed, adding +1 ber to the extraction rate. The process is both time consuming and costly. Based on the surface mining branch of the tree.

...

Positive criticisms only please...

Actually, Nataku, they never tried it. They simply decided it wouldn't work.

I think we need a Miner profession.

They have tried and they have said, the internal tester found it boring, so they took it out. It was at the time of Beta 3

Wow where were the people to say DE and ID are boring =/

Sad, this could be such a great asset yet it never saw the light of gold because of a few dissenters.

"the devs had planned to include a mining profession pre-release but took it out for some reason i cant remember"

They took it out because it, quote, "Wasn't fun". The mining profession, as it was in beta, was pretty much the same as the Merchant profession, but for mines. There was reduction to maintenance, reduction to power useage, increased survey range (the upper level survey ranges we're using now were originally used for miner, and if you check your tools, there's still one range that no one can use), etc. Basically, they didn't have time to put the effort into revamping it to make it "fun", so they scrapped the idea as a whole.

Here's the thing ...mininng isn't fun! It's profitable but not particularly interesting. Combat professions are highly interactive and therefore entertaining. Crafting profession require interaction with other players because they provide a service that not everyone can do. Therefore they are socially intreactive as well as being competeitive with other crafters. But anyone can drop harvs and call them selves a miner. Just look for someone elses field and throw down next to them. I can't believe I'm gonna say this but we need the nerf bat.

Harvesters should not be lots. They should be treated similar to merchants. The more minning XP you got the more harvs you can place. You must invest skill points to earn harvesters...bam...you are now an elite profession because you provied a service that other people cannot. You now have social interaction because people need miners if they want resources. And we know people need them. Now it fun!

Now many, many, many more things can be added to round out the profession some of which are mentioned above but IMHO this is the cornerstone that the mining profession should be built on.

Personally I like the idea. Especially if we could have some type of a foundry or somethign where we could improve the charactersitics of resources, especially metals. The problem as I see it is that we can't make only one profession allowed to have harvesters. When I'm out checking on mine I see LOTS of harvesters all over the place and I don't know of anybody that has a problem selling them. If we limit harvesters to only a select few people there just won't be enough resources to go around. Either they would still have to allow everyone to place harvesters with the miners getting a higher return or make it so that harvesters don't take up a lot. Then miners could place as many as they need/want. I did see on a thread somewhere that someone has 160 harvesters going. I was like OMG how do they do that? That's 16 accounts worth of lots.

well i say they should bring it back.

i think lot increases should also be given. i would be a miner but as long as it is somewhat fun. i mean i place my harvesters and usually sit by em only loggin on to check if the resource is still there. but i dant have much money right now so whats there to do?

Hm. Discussion here died down.

This is Definitely something that Thunderheart and the Developers need to get back on. Too many people want it, and it would be great for the economy.

This used to have such a huge following. What happened? Does nobody want the Mining Profession anymore?

the way i see it though.. the galaxies today is completely different than the galaxies of beta..

a miner profession in beta might have been boring, but now i believe plenty of people would be a miner if they where given the opportunity..
