Thread: Armor repair question
I feel your pain, manwolf. I'm a master armorsmith and I have some 96.63 effectivness armor repair tools. When i repair 1 out of 5 pieces falls apart and 3 out of 5 are only marginally repaired. And people are less than understanding when their composite chestplate falls apart.
Thoseare the kind of stats that make me not want to have a searchable character.
A WS friend of mine has weapon repair belt or some such thing. He says he has yet to fail since he started using it, but failed just as much as us before he got it. Its only like a +5 or so. From that I assume they did not put in repair bonuses for us.
The bonuses come from skill tapes. I believe some better places to get them are locked boxes in squill cave and from tuskins at fort tuskin (Both on Tat). Not sure on those because I've never gone to either place myself.
I could not find this in the FAQ, sorry for the newb question, but I just started using armor. I had a question about repairing it once it's damaged. (I knowit cannot be fixedwhen it's down to 0%, found out the hard way).
1) Can anyone repair armor, or only armorsmiths?
2) When is the best time to repair, so as to maximize the lifetime of the armor, and minimize the possibility of a critical failure that ruins the armor? IOW, wait till its at 50%, or what?
Thanks-in-advance!
My experience on the matter:
I have heard rumours that 'armour repair' is like a hidden skill or related to Armour Assembly skill. Anyone can do it, but as you become a better armoursmith you have better odds at repairing armour.
I use 99% experimented repair kits. My best is 9 from 9 pieces and worst 7 from 9 successes. When trying to repair armour before becoming an AS I always failed. Not conclusive evidence, but enough for me to feel confident for repairing today.
Conditions:
0 - never attempt. I have tried 6 times now and they have always fallen apart to silly negative numbers. 0 in the formulat must really hit the repair.
1-50% - in my experience, I tend to see more fails at this level
50%-80% - I have seen better results on average.
81%+ - I have repaired 5 pieces at this level of condition and all have been saved with minor blemishes.
Remember, this is not conclusive, just my experience. I have heard of Master ASs with similar setup getting 9 from 9 fails.
Even as master armorsmith I used to fail 2 out of 5 times and hardly ever repair with minor blemishes.
Now I make sure I don't have mind wounds or battle fatigue, pull my droid, and sit down to do the repair. I don't know how much this actually has to do with the results but I haven't had a piece fall apart in a while, and at least 50% of the time I repair w/minor blemishes only.
