Thread: rangers = recon

Rangers getting recon, when they primarily fight creatures, is as stupid as BHs having assault certs. If you ask me, someone has got things backwards.
It doesn't look like they'll be primarily fighting creatures anymore, if you check out the In-Development thread discussing the upcoming changes.
have you ever harvested as a MBH?
with just novice scout you can get buckets of hides. It is TONS more than preCU. Were you AS before CU? Did you ever kill hurtons for 45 units of hide, or little antelopes on talus fr 15-20 per? ever pay 100cpu for something in spawn?
I pay 15-25cpu for hides now and can easily get 1m or more if something is in shift I want, and the majority of my harvesters are NOT rangers.
The changes are great for ranger IMO, and if you are getting a few less hides, so what, things are still much much better.
I've had a master ranger toon and a master armorsmith toon for a year and a half now.
Sure, getting resources is simple now. Find a CL80 spawn. Get some guildies to help, preferably two rangers so they can get the 40% bonus from each other. Rake in tons of resource. But this is part of the problem with the Combat Upgrade ... it's not a Good Thing(tm).
From a crafter's point of view, sure, this is good. There is no reason whatsoever for a creature resource to be difficult to harvest in large quantities. As a result, the huge easily-gathered supply means bargain basement prices if you're buying the stuff from someone.
But when capper spineflaps give the same amount of hide as a fambaa? What sense does that make?
In the name of Balance, the devs have wiped the game clean of any genuine variety, particularly that based on any reasonable expectations. Large quantities of Naboo scaley hide SHOULD be hard to get, because spineflaps and flewts simply aren't that big. Sure, rangers still harvest 2-3 times what a novice scout can get, but in the name of Balance novice scouts can harvest so much from one lair that being a ranger is completely superfluous.
Most of the rangers I've met are like me ... we like to roleplay our characters, get into what being a "ranger" should mean. The CU broke a lot of ranger skills, and what it did to harvesting gutted much of why playing a ranger was fun.
Again, I haven't read enough about scout to know exactly what they're doing to it, but my understanding is that rangers will only need exploration IV and trapping IV. In order to gain the greatest advantage in creature harvesting, you'll need master scout. Given that master scout will be pretty much a dead-end profession, it will be interesting to see how many people choose to stick with it when they can invest those skill points in more combat skills instead, since the new ranger looks like its geared towards PvP more than anything else.
I don't quite see the great advantage the new harvesting scheme has for armorsmiths anyway -- layers and cores are the items that eat up the most resources and, other than the one type of hide needed for each of the 3 types of cores, the majority of these are highly specific minerals that are need in larger quantites than the creature resources. Lok leathery hide is ALWAYS available. Alantium carbonite ore or beyrllius copper aren't. If the current shift of Lok leather sucks, no big deal ... the fact that it is always in shift means it has a better chance of showing up with usable stats than one of these minerals has.
So yeah, at this particular time in game it's possible to rake in tons of creature resources relatively cheaply. But if the creature harvesters start disappearing from the game, good luck trying to get those resources! The people who go out to hunt this stuff and post the stats on SWGCraft may vanish, so when will you know when a good shift of hide is available? Even if you manage to find this out, good luck finding someone to go out and harvest it for you.

I know this ain't the proper forum for it, but I think everyone should take a look at that page. While the suggested profession is rather interesting, it sounds more like a thief from a FRP than anything else.
These changes have huge implications for armorsmiths, since we use so many creature resources. With Scout and Ranger both getting removed from creature harvesting roles, who is going to handle our needs? Are we supposed to go out as CL1's and kill our own critters? It's bad enough that crafters have next to no defense against creatures while out surveying and harvesting -- this is just intolerable.
Looks to me as if SOE is taking another BIG step towards nerfing crafting professions even more....

First of all, I was in error above. Apparently, harvesting is moving completely to scout. That being said...

rangers are going into stealth mode, and will be getting the recon cert instead of battle.
with them getting recon armor and being stealthy now, good time to introduce the marauder recon set? with the face mask, and cloth look to it, this would be perfect for the "new and improved" rangers
any thoughts?
I think they will be making the maruader armor a "stolen schematic" from marauders ![]()
just a thought
but would be very very cool

they will put it on the new planet so we have to buy the expansion with our crafter toons no doubt.

do you guys serious not have money? you won't have to buy the expansion, just buy the schematics
i don't mind buying the upgrade for my crafting toon as well, if we are gonna get something out of it, i was just stating that they would work it that way.
also it would be unlikely for them to make it tradable as they want ppl to buy the expansion for all their chars and they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they made it tradable.
