Hello everyone. I am begginning to get things together in preparation to start an Armorsmith character. One question that came up was the idea of going smuggler in order to handle faction armor more effeciently. Do many of you who do this change sides? Would it be cost effective and worth the time to be able to craft both rebel and imperial armor? Thank you for any input and insights.

That all depends on how much you sell the armor for. Factor the cost you spend ranking each time you abandon a faction into your suits. I did it once and was able to absorb it, but I have no interest in repeating the process.

I actually have a follow up question... Is it possible to purchase multiple limited use schematics at a time. Say I wanted to purchase 5 schematics for Rebel Battle armor for example. Is that allowed?

Ithink it really depends on your play style and what sort of people you are competing with.
If you yourself want to carry all types of faction armor no matter what, by all means go for it.
It WILL be a pain going back and forth everytime you need say a ST Bracer oneday, then a Reb Chest the next day because the armor's not selling at the same pace or whatnot.
But it will be aone-stop shopfor those looking for both types (like for decoration etc).
Try it out and tell us how it goes.
I don't think anyone here willhave a definite yes or no.
Personally, what I do is I have a very close in-game friend that's an Imp smith (I'm Rebel).
We display each other's armor in our shops and take special orders for each other.
We even share some of our resources.
It works out for both of us since we both refuse to change faction. LOL

I'm actually changefaction tofactionatm with my toon, and I don't find it a problem. I know 2 smugglers that are willing to buy points for me at cost for different sides. I buy 200 to join and get ranked up once or twice to be able to hold about 5k FP at a time. If I have left over points over 500fp I usually just stay on that faction until I can use the points off and resign from that faction.
Like JediSpam said, depends on who your trying to sell too.

Hmm, this all smacks of treason to me.
What? your saying that you cannot be neutral seller and sell to bought sides?
Well, you couldn't be neutral and make either one of them. Plus I don't think the Empire would be too pleased. The Rebellion might let you get away with it

If it were ME, I'd say make the Imp armor out of basic cores and the Reb armor out of advanced cores ... and sell it for the same price.
Seriously, tho, some numbers to play with:
Minimum costs in faction points for each armor piece:
250 per schematic for boots, gloves
1000 per schematic for bracers, biceps, leggings, helmet
2000 per schematic for chest
= 8500 minimum per full suit
= 25,500 for all 3 types for a faction
Minimum cost in faction points to have a cap big enough for a chest piece:
600 (200 to join + 400 for lance corporal: 8000 fp cap)
Minimum cost in faction points to have cap big enough for all 27 schematics:
4200 (200 + 400 + 800 + 1200 + 1600 for sergeant: 36,000 fp cap)
-- so, you'll need between 26,100 (minimal path or MP) and 29,700 (optimal path or OP) fp IF there is a planet on your server with zero (0) enemy bases and (not sure how many, but at least 1) allied bases. But wait! There's more....
Reduced requirements if you have a general inspiration buff (+10% faction):
23,728 fp (= 26,100 with 10% bonus for MP)
27,000 fp (= 29,700 with 10% bonus for OP)
Actual costs in fp to /delegate all that faction (x1.177 for colonels):
27,928 fp (MP)
31,779 fp (OP)
-- there you have it! You can go up to lance corporal and have your sponsor delegate a little, you buy a schematic, delegate, buy, etc., or you can go up to sergeant (may have to do this in two steps -- 600 to get to lance corporal, then 3600 to get to sergeant) and then get all the fp you need in one shot.
Oops! You may have to pay for all that faction! What might it cost?
Option 1: Pay a smuggler. If you want to check into the specifics of smugglers' ability to buy fp, look here. Short answer: 100 cpu is a bargain if the smuggler knows what he is doing.
== 2,372,800 credits without "expenses", 2,792,800 with "expenses" (MP)
== 2,700,000 credits with exp, 3,177,900 without exp (OP)
Option 2: Pay a faction grinder. Some people grind Pikets for fun, profit and xp; others grind CL25 NPCs from the other side. I've seen faction grinders sell as cheap as 50 cpu -- a price that would be selling at a loss for a Master Smuggler Colonel. So...
== 1,186,400 without exp, 1,396,400 with exp (MP)
== 1,350,000 without exp, 1,588,950 with exp (OP)
Option 3: Cozy up to a faction-grinding colonel on either side and promise them 1 suit of faction armor for a free "donation". Cost? What's your "retail" price for a suit of armor? Prolly more than option 2, or close to it. And that's retail. Wholesale? Consider it a bargain.
Option 4: Have actual friends on each side who happen to be faction-grinding colonels. Cost of some fixed number of resources needed to make the armor: X number of credits. Cost of maintenance and power on your factories, harvesters and crafting house: Y number of credits. Look on your friend's face when you give her a suit of faction armor: Priceless.
Look on your face when she says, "nw ... I don't need the armor, just let me know when you need more fp": even more priceless, if there is such a thing.
Option 5: Buy another account, grind to an elite combat profession AND master smuggler AND to colonel in your army. Buy yet another account and do the same thing, but for the other side. Find the best spots to grind faction, camp until you can bug a spawn, then macro away for 4-5 hours to get that 30k fp or so. Cost: Prohibitive. Been there (half way), done that.
... hmmm ... didn't I say something a few hours ago about needing sleep? ...

wow, i wasnt expecting such an in-depth answer. Thank you! I will have to look at all those numbers again. My preliminary plan was to go master smuggler myself and buy from the recruiter, but that could also be a back up plan to some of your other options. Great post, thank you very much. May talk to a few of my guildies and see if I can't work something out. I do have an alt as well, so I may be able to do a mixture of a few of your options. Once i get rolling I will make another post. Thank you all so much
