Hmm, I thought I had replied to this earlier, but must have never hit "submit"... :/
Let's try again.
Sources, please.
I disagree.
A droid with a built-in shield generator (no more portable than the droid, itself) is not equivalent to a portable psg for biological humanoids. Droids have the benefit of being constructed, and can thus be designed to incorporate bulky, energy-consuming shield generators. While the gungans had force shields, they only protected a limited area and weren't psg's. There's just no evidence for psg's as represented in the pc games existing in the SW universe--if they had existed, they'd be an integral part of personal combat and defence. Regardless of the fx "limitations" of movie-making in the late 70's and early 80's, they'd have been represented in the many EU novels and comics. Everybody who's anybody would have had one clipped to her belt for those special occasions--most especially people running diplomatic missions where discretion is required and added protection needed (which was the basis for a great many EU novels).
That's not to say I think they shouldn't have been added to SWG; indeed, in a game where many npc humanoids have multiple times the HAM of players (in itself contrary to continuity), I think they're a good addition and need to be fixed. The pc games have consistently deviated from continuity here and there for playability, and this is just one of those occasions. I just take issue with the statement that the devs love them because they "fit with continuity," as I don't believe it's accurate (unless they're talking about "continuity" with the pc games, which isn't the same as continuity with EU), and was wondering if someone actually did have an EU source supporting the comment.

Shields most definately existed all over the EU of star wars..
Sources, please.
But if they existed in episode one timeframe as portable shields that where "used" by droid army 30 years prior to the "current" SWG timeframe.. i think its fairly safe to assume that they are well within the continuity.

Even if the PSG were not bugged with stat shifting, it is way too much trouble to make. The names of the components are so stupidly long its a pain to keep track of what and what. Not to mention you need another profession to get two of the 6 components.

They sould work but the have a short life. Check the condition. If it's zero, then it's dead and you will need a new one.

As long as you don't fail in the repair it will still work. I've repaired some 5 times before they died, of course each time I repaired it the max condition also dropped which hurt.

They only seem to work, for me at least, if I take them off and put them back on again right before I enter combat. If I don't do that I never see the 'blocked x damage' messages. Not sure if it's blocking and just not telling me when I don't take it off and put it back on or not.

You still sometimes have to un-equip and re-equip them after shuttling or crossing a server boundary in order for them to work. Also, if you're hit with a vulnerable damage type (acid, LS, blast, kinetic) it won't report any feedback.

a little FYI, I unequipped my PSG and forgot to equip it and then i traveled. When I reached my destination it was at zero, completely gone.
So the lesson here folks is make sure your PSG is always equipped.

That's an odd bug. I usually always have a PSG equipped, but I also almost always have a spare or two in my inventory and have never had one do that. DId you do a /bug on it?

PSG Mark III is the best. It has probably more condition and better resists. I think. I've only done mark III PSGs so this is just guesses.
Imperial Prototype PSGsis even better.
