We need a new post, and I just got this e-mail in game. It's from someone I don't know.

"sorry, i have see that u r a good armorsmith and im new in armorsmith profession and if u can help me u will be nice =D"

How would you respond?

If I got a /tell or g-mail like this, this is what I'd do:

/addignore newbarmorsmith

This just sounds too much like begging to me, and I can't stand beggers (whether in a game or in RL).

if you have never done a crafting proffesion before it can be very daunting and not make much sense and no amount of reading all the posts can answer every question that if you just asked someone to walk you through it can solve.

i also have another AS buddie of mine who i asked for help off with knowledge and stuff now we are producing armour together as a team which is a lot more fun than doing a solo project alone we have 12 factories on the go and opening up new shops on different planets if i was doing it solo and not asking for help when i needed it i wouldnt be getting very far

so you should reply to the mail "how can i help you" because at some point in the game we have all needed help when we didnt know something and without that help a lot of us wouldnt be where we are today

also his english may not be perfect but at least he is trying to learn another language im sure many of us that preach that someone cant spell proberly havent got a second language they can read, write and speak even if its not perfect he tried

and remember not everyone in this game is 40 there are a lot of younger players that are still in school that enjoy playing as well even if they dont know everything yet its still a learning curve for them

Although I agree with you about helping newer players, the tone of his e-mail was really stupid.

I highly doubt the sender of the mail is using english as a second language.

Imean come one, if you're going to ask someone for their help, at least write "you" instead of "u" and "are" instead of "r". It's just common courtesy to write properly, especially to someone you don't know. It's not like you're chatting with a friend in groupchat.

Yeah, this e-mail isn't English as a second language. I have a number of in-game customers who speak French, Portugeuse, and Spanish as their native tongue. They are all literate in their writing, even the 14-year-old from Brazil. I love using Altavista's Babelfish to send them tells and e-mails in their own language, telling them I've only learned to write it but cannot yet read it. It works very well if you write clearly and simply.

This definitely a kid raised on IM. No punctuation (well, one comma slipped in), no caps, and abbreviated spelling. The lack of any specific request is what throws up the biggest flag for me. I'll reply tomorrow, and we'll see what happens.

I'd probably say hi to the person and see what he might want. I hate typing all the crap about AS and/or tailor stuff when all the info is available on the profession forum FAQ. Depending on my business / mood, I might not even respond to the dude. =)

Id reply "How can I help you?"

For the same reason someone above stated. I started AS just a few days after launch, but wanting to do it all alone meant it took a while to get resources etc to grind (not to mention my first factory). I came across 2 people that helped me out, that I could ask questions (and borrow a bit of factory time) and that helped imensly.

However, if they beg for cash or resources, I usually say no. If they ask for a couple K of something to try a prototype of something new, Id say yes.

If I do help someone out, I also make a point to ask them to be nice to another smith in return...hopefully what comes around goes around...

I get the how do I sort of question a lot of the time from guildies and others that I know.

When I get some random tell/mail asking for something I usualy respond asking what they want and how they want me to help.

Myother halfwho also plays and has done for over a year now still turns and asks me things that she doesn't know so everyone needs help and advice at times.

A lot of the time I direct people to read the forums as there is nothing you can't find out here about any crafting profession.

We all know that the destrucion I mean instruction manual for the game needs to be seriously updated with a lot of information about basic gameplay.

The one from the Empire devided box is fairly good but out of dat and the one from TTE is sat in it's box as it's next to useless.

I would ask the sender of this mail what they wanted to know about being an armoursmith but would not give them any credits/resources etc, advice yes but actual in game materials nope.

I remember when I started crafting. I was a droid engineer. The only other DE I ran into was this guy Cor'Ai. He loaned me 10k, then sold me a kaduu for 5k. Some architect I ran into hooked me up with a house. It wasa medium Tatooine. He said I could use it as long as I paid him back, which I did over about a month(Starting out DE's don't make much). I used the 5k to buy some resources off the bazaar. I crafted crafting tools and survey devices until I could make micro-harvs. So I made those and sold them for about1k a pop or so, maybe a couple of swoops, etc... and sold some resources, and used some to grind up DE more.

So be nice, help out, but make sure to get something back for your troubles. This does 2 things. 1) you profit, in friendship, and in credits. 2)They learn how to be independent, and don't make a menace of themselves by begging and whining to you whenever they need something They have respect for their abilities. Teach a man/woman/leezard/spiky head/squiddy/dog lookin/hammerhead/ugly dood to fish, and they'll never go hungry again.

And despite what many say, pretty much every question I ever had about crafting anything was/is available on the boards....you just gotta find it, not the other way around.

But if anyone asked me about grinding resources, I would gladly send them a list of my prices.

I'm all for being nice, but get jaded after a while when you run into too many stupid people.

My shakey Russian tells me the first sentence is'Always good to see a Russian friend.' And nomera dva is 'He uses(?) in____ language and in ___ alphabet.' Now I have to go look it up since my curiosity is piqued

First one looks good Try 'Он использует различный язык и алфавит.' instead for the second one. For some reason alta-vista was structuring it as if 'different' was a proper language name. For instance, if you had said 'He uses Russian,' then it would use that structure and come out like 'Он использует по-русскйи.' At least I think so

It does a way better job than some other online translators I have seen, though. Thanks for sharing the link.
