In the Star Wars universe, all starships have two types of shields. Energy and particle...the particle shields stop things like meteors and torpedos, the energy shields stop laser blasts.

Partical shields apparently have always been big and bulky (too big to be personal) so the only PSG's that people could have were against energy blasts.

Just some backround info

no they don't. They only protect against ranged energy attacks. That doesnt include saber throw either
