You never stop getting resources. Intitially it took about 2 months to get everything to start making "decent" armor for the time.
Better stuff seems to spawn all the time though, so you always have to be on the look out.

I started my Armorsmith alt in November last year and about earlier this month I had a decent quality stock of the resources needed to make OK armor.
It's been some busy months mining, I've only mined my own resources (since I have 3 accounts). Luckily I had some resources I've harvested earlier I could use now to make armor. Some realy good AS Aluminium hasn't spawned since I become AS, but I had some since earlier.
Eclipse has seen some of the best spawn of certain resources the past 3-4 months so I have been pretty lucky.
But it's always a contintinuing buisness to check for new and better resources. Especially good animal harvests, like hides. Those one can always get more off.

I saved up armorsmith resources for about 2 months. I ground armorsmith in 4 days with Mabari Chest Plates just 2 days ago. I have just now gotten the time to experiment and i'll be making 80en/80kin/79%el/69% base comp, 80%kin/80%el/72-73%base, also 80%el/71-72% base armor. Just with 10pt armorsmith. I've got well over 20million in resources and now have +7 armor exp points and working on 12pt armorsmith.

Hi,
As Ummonprime has said, you never stop collecting resources. I've been a Master Armoursmith/Master Artisan/Tailor Fieldwear 3 for around a year and have found its good to get into the habit of constantly checking for new resources and always have ALL your harvesters running (if they're not running then they're wasted!). Go for the larger harvesters if you can, rather than the personal ones.
Check out SWGCRAFT.com for the best resources on your server and check your draft schematics for the rarer resources you'll need (for advanced segs and the like). You'll find that when an Uber-Resource turns up on your server there'll be a lot of people vying for plots to drop their harvesters in the 80+ concentrations. Harvest it, even if you can't craft with it yet - you'll need it in the future.
You may also need a continuous supply of organics, depending on what you intend crafting, (wooly hide for one) so its good to be on good terms with the scouts and rangers. A good spawn of hide is more than worth its weight in credits!! I've seen none-crafting guild members devoting 2 or 3 sessions to harvesting the best organics for their crafters when they appear.

Find an armorsmith on your server who is a nice person and figure out what the best stuff out there is. Then start building up to those specs. Buy the best old resources you can (those might be the best ever) and mine new stuff when it is worth mining.....But it took me prob 4months to get enough resources to feel good about my armor.... (Make that hunting, there are not alot of people out there making it, you will make millions)

Took me about 45 days to self harvest all the resources I needed to START(Composite/Ubese). Not including the time it took to upgrade them...thats a work in progress...always.

I'd say took me about a month to get the resources for my first sets of run of armor that I sold to the public. Man that stuff was awful! Then it took me about another two or three months to get decent stuff, and resources to make advanced composite, which helped me a long way.

A few months is probably a realistic time frame. You can be creative when starting out and maybe get by doing some specialty items that don't require uber resources to be able to sell them. I actually worked on gathering resources (I was a Master Ranger for my first Holocron back in December of 2003 and that sparked my interest in Armorsmithing) before I ever started my way up the Armorsmith tree.
