Thread: Hide Farms
Lythender, you hit it right on the nose. I love to hunt, in fact its pretty much all I do. I dropped master ranger a long time ago down to 0/0/4/0 ranger and sadly am just as effective as a master. People dont like playing a broken profession so they moved on. There are a few who truly enjoy it though so we fight on.
For the person who said they cant get enough hides... there are many shifts where I find myself just hunting garbage hide/meat on dath to sell to grinders. Look harder next time, there are a few rangers left ![]()
On prices, yes they would fall a bit (supply / demand) if more rangers were out there. However, I dont feel asking 25-30cpu is too much these days (my rates). With buffs, travel, wear & tear on my equipment, brandy, etc I dont make that much of a profit really. The few rangers I know in-game are honorable and usually charge the same rates regardless of quality. This means even if some OQ 999 + Shock 980 stuff shows up we honor our contracts and take 30cpu for that 25k stack of hides (even though someone just offered me 150cpu for it, happens a lot to me and yes Im tempted lol). When I'm done with my orders, and if Im not burned out from hunting then I may seek out thay gentleman that offered me a small fortune. Otherwise I honor my contracts first.
The ideas here may have some merit (based on need) but ultimately they would be the deathblow to us. What we need is to be able to harvest more, simple as that. Unfortunately, there appear to be no fixes for rangers on the horizon.

The Bio-Farm idea, the stationary traps, or other types of quick ways to supplement the needs of the crafting community have been brought up and debated on the ranger forums.
These are my thoughts about those.
I love being a ranger, some of my best friends in the game are armorsmiths, the ones I have met on Lowca have been polite, generous and very helpful. I love hunting for creatures and skinning them. The idea of a stationary harvester makes me nervous because this would put me and my friends out of business. Camps are no longer necessary to pull out pets, droids and speeders and thats 2 full trees of xp in scout and ranger. If there were bio-engineered hides, then the BE's would mass produce them, and put us out of business, eliminating another tree of ranger to be useless.
My suggestion is this:
start asking for an increase in harvesting abilities for the rangers. When the supply is low and the demand is high, prices skyrocket, when supply is high, and demand is high, the prices find a nice status quo and eventually balance themselves out the way that most inorganic prices have.
I have done jobs for 20k hides at 60cpu. That in total is 1.2 million credits...
Imagine having a single ranger be able to harvest 60k hides for 20 cpu, the price is the same, yet we both win, you get amazing resources at a lower price and we are able to continue being Rangers.
Rather than having the devs take time out from other aspects of the game to design program, add art and testing for a stationary harvester, have them modify the way that +harvesting is calculated and there is a very simple solution to all of our problems.
It is hard for anyone to get a decent amount of any of the harvested resources (meat, bone, hide) without offering completely insane prices for them. I've seen offers on the trade boards, offering up to 150cpu !!! By all means, the rangers and scouts out there deserve something to make them unique, to find a way to make a living in the game. But right now, the demand for organics is way, way over the supply avalaible.
The "hide farm" idea would be nice, but should remain completely under the control of the scout/ranger classes, with better farms avaliable to higher level rangers. Same sort of structure would work for meats and bone.
Ideas to increase the amount that a ranger can harvest is good too.
But I don't care how it gets fixed, but it needs to be fixed. right now, I don't see where it's worth someone's time to go out and hunt the hides and resources.. it just takes too long to get a decent quanity of any harvested resource.
As for hide quality... there should be a skill a master ranger could wield that would make a current, not as desirable, hide into the qualities of one from a different shift that might be more desirable. It should be a ranger skill, though, not a tailor or a BE.
