To my understanding, PSGs were never intended to give ANY protection VS an armor piercing weapon. If the weapon pierces through the shield layer, then you lose it's normal resists as well as the AR bonus VS an AP0 attack. I'm not sure if an AP2+ attack would gain the +25% damage bonus twice though (+25% through shield, then the total damage going up another +25% through the armor).

I would like to add something though...

I hear that Using AP weapons VS players without armor does not grant the +25% damage bonus. This actually makes it MORE damaging to wear Mabari VS a Republic Blaster than wearing nothing at all VS that same RB... I think that a vuln in armor should be treated as wearing no armor, and such, firing an AP weapon upon a naked target should get the +25% damage bonus per level of AP.

I think that AS is a great profession, especially now with the fixes. We used to have8 armors, 1 in Artisan, 2 Bugged, and 3 no on wanted for Encumb or gated resist reasons leaving us with Composite and Ubese and only at Master AS. We now have another two armors we can make along with PSGs, but RIS seems a bit out there and Tantel only has three pieces (and no Adv)... So now that the armor is FINALLY fixed (it only took them about a year), they're doing the combat revamp! My hopes for that are balancing all armor so that the low-end armors have a place on the battlefield as well as the money makers.

Nice summary of the State of the AS Profession, and please do add the Repair issue (maybe there should be an Armor Repair skill that increases in the Tech branch).

[edit] PS - We need an apron because I think the tapes are pretty rare for AS... I haven't found 1 Exp tape, nor have I seen many for sale... I think that a +5 exp Apron would help out the Tech IV smiths so they could use 8 points for low-end armors until Master as well as help masters get that much closer to 12 points.

When you looked at a bunch of medevil knights fighting, they all looked pretty similar as they were all wearing the same armor. They all wore the same armor because it was the best, and the best keeps you from getting killed. People wear composite because its the best.

I see two big issues.

First off, I'm a new Master Armorsmith. Though I've been studying armorsmith for a while, both in game and on forums, I just got Master about two weeks ago. I'm lucky enough to have a modest financial backer to get me started, though not for continuing support.

That being said, I seefour problems. The first two might be local just to Eclipse, I'm not sure.

First is resource spawning. Some resources such as Vertex Crystalline Gemstone and Beryllius Copper haven't spawned in the last two-three cycles since I became Master (might even be more than that, I'm not sure). In addition, I have found it hard to find Beryllius Copper, and I have not found the gemstone on vendors in the Galaxy. In addition, many of the new resources are not of very good quality, so newer armorsmiths such as myself can either fork out the money to buy the good stuff or make due with the new stuff. Either way, it's hard to compete with the armorsmiths that have good stuff stashed away from months ago. This is especially the case with Wooly Hide, where good Wooly Hide (OQ in the 900s and decent MA and SR) goes for about 75cpu.

That brings me to my second point. Armor selection and pricing. The old armorsmiths that have resources stockpiled can offer suits and a cost lower than new smiths can offer with breaking even. I'd say at least 85% of the armor sold is 80% Kinetic Composite Armor, which can be found for anywhere between 200K and 396K. I've seen some go for under 200K, but they are lacking usually in decent HAM. I know this one is a little bit of complaining, I'm sorry if this one is a little foundless, I don't know the states of the other galaxies.

Third is Experimentation tapes. As has been explained, it's near impossible for low end smiths to compete with Masters. In addition, we're starting to see Masters being hard pressed to compete with "12 point" smiths. +1 expermimentation tapes are going for about a million apiece. There was a +3 experimenation tape that went for 24 million on the forums about a week and a half ago. This also seems to be one of the rarer skill tapes. Again we are getting into an economy driven by a few uber-items that seems to make the rich richer.

Finally is what buffs have done to our profession. Making a low end composite suit is nearly useless now. Because of buffs, the objective is to get the resists as high as possible and throw Encumbrance to the wind. I saw someone opt to buy a suit that was 50K more than mine because it offered better resists, but cost nearly 200+ in Encumbrance in each HAM category.

These are some problems I see. Thank you for your time, and keep up the awesome work. I have to say that Armorsmith has one of the richest communities, and I'd say that has a big part to due with our coorespondant and defacto leader.

Hey all fellow armorsmiths.

as a armorsmith on the tempest server, we as a whole have noticed a good shift of nice resoruces. But today just brainstorming here are a few thoughts.

1. With all this modern technology within the swg, how about some craftable enhancements, or full mods to armor to allow some defense poisons/disease.

2.

2. with composite it looks like an entire suit, one would think a whole suit would seal , and offer some defense against that.

3. A good wish (/pray) would be , for all crafters, an elite status, for instance at master add 500k-1mil, whatever floats, for an elite armor/weapon smith.

adding mando armor is cool, but i am sure there can be some other types of armor out there. RIS is a joke, good protection, but can pretty muchj get better stats on compm and with the current buff/food situation enc seems to not be a major concern.

4. add some new damage type weapons and also layers ofcourse. but add something cool to atleast the current tree. right now all i do is comp, i am lucky to get 80% kin 69% base 4% stun. but that is about all i personally want to bild, ubese is cool, buttt, padded cost me more to make than comp. the others are crazy. waste of resources.

Great post...

One thing.. On the note of the armorsmith crafting apron... Please suggest it as a standard Belt or Bandolier,

There are a few of us wookiee armorsmith out there... and currently we can not wear any of the crafting aprons... It is unknown if this was just an oversight or intentional... but making an armorsmith belt/Bando would be more useful to the entire community...

It has been brought up in the Talor and Core systems Fourms... But I know there are a few wookiee crafters out there who are ticked off already at the fact they cant wear the current aprons because they are not designed to fit a wookiee...

witch I find odd, considering we can wear the new Cooks Jacket...

Character Name: Chalvooka WOOKIEE FROM DAY ONE!! still a wookiee even after a small break from SWG!!! A Wookiee from before wookiee armors and ROTW or RTOS!!!!

apparently ris armor can be crafted to be better than composite in some ways but i guess it is usually not enough of a gain over good composite to take a chance that it could decay. it simply doesnt make any sense to have something that is supposed to be a difficult quest for ARMOR turn out to be an almost impossible quest for a museum piece. if ris had the same or close to same resists as composite but with half the encumbrance this would be infinitely better.

Im afraid this isnt the case as you will never be able to have both very high base resist and very high kinetic. It is even worse when acid (a common damage type) is a vulnerability

I also want to petion for a change in how APvsAR work as that seems to be something that is severely bugged. (having T21 for example do more damage against ppl wearing low level armor than those without them)

as you pointed out low level armor is pretty useless right now.

i think there are 2 ways to get people to use low level armor.

first swg could add armor certifications to the game, so low level armor will be sold at all.

second: alter effectiveness and special protections on all existing armor types so there is for all damage types at least one armor covering this damage type as special protection. then you should add layers to actually every armor.

this will make novice smiths able to place purchased layers in their low level armor, so people might actually be using novice crafted items.

and please make experimentation on effectiveness and special protection work the same way on all armor types.

Armor certifications is a bad, bad idea as it would force everyone into the profession that has the Composite cert because of it beeing so overpowered compared to the other armors

not if you improve all these diffrent kinds.

so you actually get like 6 to 10 diffrent types, all got different specials and vulnerabilities.

i also think its a good idea to hardcap special protection at something like 80% or 85% and the base protection at something like 60% to 70%

Just to make a diffrence between base and special protection.

so you wont have anymore invulnerable 90% composites and you got a lot diffrent armor to choose if you want a certain special protection
