Think of it this way....

Your armor has a certain amount of 'points' that can be used to absorb damage. As it absorbs damage, the pool on the armor decreases. Once it reaches 0 points, it's buggered and no go good for anything but decoration.

Repair kits kinda work like crafting rolls for architects... from utter failure to amazing success and restore a percentage of the 'used up points'

So suppose you had 20000/20000 points on your armor. You get shot and run around and it goes down to 10000/20000 points. You buy/make/steal a brilliant repair kit and do a repair. The system determines your roll is forking brilliant and gives you back 8000/ of those 10000 used points. Your armor is now 18000/18000 but back to 100%

Or suppose you take a pounding and your armor is 400/20000 points. You've annoyed the armorsmith gods and this time when you roll on your repair, you bork the peice and it goes to -500/20000 points. Since it becomes unwearable at 0, it's effectively dead.

Debate will rage over values, but I always repair my armor after it's lost about 25% of its condition. Understand that even with a perfect repair kit and a brilliant roll, you're likely to lose some condition - so no suit is going to last forever.

On this same note, I respec'ed my friend's discarded account to be a master armorsmith in order to repair my armor and keep myself personally outfitted in cheap disposable basic armor to provide a bit of protection where the choice would be trash my good armor for nothing or wear BE clothes and hope not to die. (Also our town armorsmith has quit being an AS to ... i think he is a night elf now or sometink like that so I'm still looking for a good AS to give my custom to).

Anyway, I had my master armorsmith repair my trashed armor and I didn't have the impression that he was any better at repairing it than my main toon was? I think there used to be a repair bonus to armorsmiths - I looked in the crafting tree and it seems to be gone (if it was ever there) ???

There never was a repair bonus to MAS. So yes, everyone has the same chance.

There is force-sensitive repair. Much debate on whether it works.

I repaired a set of padded last night that had dropped to 25% or less for each piece. I am MAS, using a 98% repair kit. Trashed 4 out of seven pieces. of the three that I did repair two were "marginal".

Armor repair is a "last ditch" option.

Pre-CURB, I never repaired pieces until they were ready to start losing resists at 50%. At least you're sure to get half the wear out of it that way...

Armor repair is completely random...but high quality tools and not letting it drop under 50% is a good rule of thumb.
