In Jedi Knight II, you run into the remnaints of the Imperial forces mining large quantities of the stuff and manufactured large amounts of black armor amde out of it, completly invulnerable to light sabers. Though now that I think about it, Jedi Knight II seemed to reflect SWG universe, with the bad guys using the Valley of the Jedi to infuse force powers with tons of people (just like the rather ungodly influx of jedi) and then handed 'em a light saber and threw them at the hero. *shrug*Light saber resitant armor is in the SW universe, and has been practically mass produced, but the devs seem to love jedi so much, I doubt we'll get our hands on anything that can stop 'em.

On the gating subject, TH has posted that when a schematic calls for a gated resource they overshoot the min-max values for the schematic to get it at the target level.
I think they used a republic blaster as an example, with plumbum iron being the gated resource. Say they wanted the blaster to do 100-150 damage, they would make the schematic have a damage range of something like 250-300, so that the final crafted item would fall into their target numbers after the (fairly poor) experimental qualities of plumbum iron were factored in.
I'm not a weaponsmith, so I don't know the proper numbers, but you get the idea.
