Funny that this post should pop up. I was thinking the same thing after i read this comment from the chat yesterday:
"Brannoc - *RRR187* How will crafters place harvesters on planets now, since creatures kill low level characters so quickly?
Helios_SOE If you wish to gather resources in dangerous areas, you should either get a PSG or you could also hire some other players to protect you in the wilds. "
I guess I will have to drop much of merchant. I do hope that they let more than just the combat players respec.
EDIT: I think the reasoning by Helios is nothing short of despicable. And I'm sure it will be the merchant profession that suffers for it.

Master Canceleer =)
all accounts cancelled 5-10-5 ...!
I loved the game, therefore I hate the game
Hope you all burn in Helios
I've got Master Armorsmith, Master Weaponsmith, Master Artisan, Tailor 0200, Merchant 3004. I've thought about dropping the Tailor and the 3xxx part of merchanct, but, the ability to create Reinforced Fiberplast Panels and Synthetic Cloth comes in handy when you run out with the customer standing in front of you waiting. Not sure if the few extra skill points going into any combat would really make a difference anyway.
So, being a Combat Level 1, I decided the best way to stay alive, was to not keep my main shop & factories outside the Dant. Mining Outpost anymore. I'll just turn this into a "retail outlet", and move my base of operations to a nice, quiet area in the middle of Talus where you really have to drive around a bit to even run across a yellow dot. I've probably got about a 1500m radius around me that I feel safe traveling in, and from what I've seen so far, the resource spawns there are pretty good... I've been able to locate decent deposits in this "safe zone".
For resources that we need that are on other planets... guess I may have to respec my alt a bit. Possibly drop master ranger, keep the 0040 harvesting tree to get as much hide as possible, and add the surveying tree in artisan. Not sure if that will keep me at CL 80 or not, I'll have to check first.
Master Armorsmith - Master Pikeman. harvesting up to 3, business and surveying up to 4.
Pikeman is the one i was the highest on pre-cu, only being at novice, so i gave up all my tailoring skills and spent double XP week mastering it... only to find that I would have been able to respec to it yesterday :/ Pikeman, being a defensive profession, allows you to slow down damage to yourself long enough to get away if you are attacked by a high level while your out in the field trying to work... and it is a decent addition to the usually offense heavy groups.
I was really tempted to drop armorsmith after they gave us the ability to respec those skills, and make myself a combat level 80... but I know that armorsmith is what keeps me interested in the game. My two brothers that I always play together. They both gave up their artisan professions, weaponsmith and architect, to get the skill points back for combat. If they didn't have me dragging them to dathomir to gather fiberplast, or naboo to harvest hide... we wouldn't really have much to do.
My biggest problem with armorsmith post-cu is the lack of variety. I only have a few types of armor to choose from, being certed for battle armor, and the different pieces from these sets don't mix and match well. I really think the battle armor classes got the shaft in the deal. The only cool looking type of battle armor is RIS... which no one can afford. I cant even afford to make it for myself.
I'll be glad when the respec period is over... so i can quit being tempted to scarp the profession.
lol.
if you are on the Corbantis server... i can offer you some protection. for a price.
