Thread: Do you find that people even look at encumbrance anymore?

I was just wondering about your opinions. It seems that most people in this day of being constantly buffed, look only at resists on the armor they are purchasing. Gone are the days of people with calculators figuring out what drugs and food to eat so they can wear their armor. I guess what I am asking is should i even bother with looking at MAL anymore when gathering resources or should i just simplify my hunt to high OQ and SR?...I am very new to this prof with my alt and was just wondering what the veteran Armorsmiths think? Should i just be hunting down the resources for the best resists possible and if it happens to have some good MAL is it just a bonus at this point?
Thanks

Yes people still look for light-weight armour...

Any profession that relies heavily upon the mind pool will feel instant benefit from a light suit, particularly if they are zabrak or a race with weak mind stats.

The difference can be worth a brandy with the right slices.

I find that Rifleman/Docs love my Nightsister Comp, sells like hot cakes

The problem is, while these people exist, they DO NOT represent the majority. I've sold plenty of armor that had obscene ham costs to twi's and zabs and they love the extra protection.

Surely I've ran into a few of these encumbrance people, but they don't tend to survive alot of PVP, or really care about FOTM's and that kind of thing. And even for them, I recommend they get armor with the highest stats and then just pray for encumb slices. Or even better yet, just buy all the armor I'd just as soon throw away because it got encumb sliced .

A few look at helms, but most buyers just aren't savvy about Encumb and really why should they be. Doctor buffs and food make it pretty much irrelevant.

Yeah sorry I really should have said that it doesnt represent the majority of the market share, but non-the-less there are people out there that look for low encumbrance armour and you could well carve yourself a nice little niche market to cater for.

In the top top end market hams matter as well. When half the smiths on the server are producint 70% base armor, it's the smith who cares enough to produce armor with hams that are 100 (or more)pts lower then everyone elses that becomes known as the "best" producer and who can therefore charge twice what everyone else charges.

And with the 80% kinetic/low hamcomp nichemarket, ham's matter as well.

Exactly. Why degrade the effectiveness of your food/spice/buffs more than you have to? In this day and age of DOT warfare, that 100 extra willpower could be the difference between winning and losing.

As far as the general market is concerned, most people don't care...they buy from whomever their friend says to buy from, and they buff...

The really intelligent PvP'ers out there pay attention, but even theybow to base more often that not. If it means getting another point of base...do what you have to. The most work pretty much goes into getting the HAM as low as possible while not losing that point of base.

This is further complicated by the popularity of "Cheater Sets"...as far as I know, you can still get away with not wearing pants and arm pieces at all...not sure when/how this is getting fixed.

Regarding PvE...this is my favorite niche...

I normally wear Kinetic comp on my alt, and haveKinetic/Energy sets in reserve for certain situations. My reserve sliced kinetic sets are usually 3xx/2xx/3xx, and my E/K sets are 4xx/3xx/4xx...this is all without NS shards. I can actually hunt without buffs and actually get off a few specials without killing myself. Of course...if I'm buffed...I can special non-stop and hardly even see the HAM bars move...nonetheless...it's a hoot to use these sets.

I'll usually slice 25 full sets per comp run, and I keep the best two encumberance sets for myself. I usually bag the next best two for auctions or friends...and then sell off the rest piece-by-piece.

As far as I'm concerned...this is the absolute best stuff in the game for PvE...and I find I really enjoy the challenge of crafting low HAM armor...in a world where everyone else seems to prefer high-base. Then again...I've never gotten into PvP

I think we have a few camps here......

  • The PvP player - high base as possible, does not even look at base.

  • The smart PvP player - high base as possible, but understands also that a couple of hundred points saved on HAM may be the difference between winning or loosing.

  • The PvE player - high base as possible, does not even look at base.

  • The smart PvE player - PvE battles can last much longer than PvP and thus HAM values are very important, when tankingthe difference between 900 ish HAM eff sliced heavy armor and 300 ish HAM enc sliced is HUGE... Any player - even rifleman with there t21's will be able to use specials all day and not see the blue bar budge an inch. 80% kin / 80% energy low HAM as possible will sort you out great in most PvE battles..

HAM's are largely unimportant (except when having pissing contests with other AS's), so I always try to get mine as low as possible.

Nothing really new to add but:

yep, I always look at the HAM costs, if I think its too much, its too much.

A rule of thumb for me is just "If I wouldn't wear it, I wont make it".

Mytemplate, although hardly original, allows me to test comp armor on professions that are very different in the way they deliver / take damage as well as study the ham effecton each. I then tune a recipe to addess what I learnandcan rest assured I have done my job to offer a viable overall product based on what I can get from my resources.

There are extremes on both sides (ultra low enc / ultra high base) but neither are main stream market an thus I'm not really addressing those.
