Right now, if you are a combat type and do not have a set of composite armor, people look at you like you're crazy. I am all for checks and balances in a game, decisions you have to make that have positives and negatives. Right now composit armor is the equivalent of having a profession that grants you all the skills of all the advanced combat professions but only takes the skill points of 1.5.
First off, they are going to have to remove the current armor. I know this will have people calling for the heads of the Devs, but right now it's way too out of whack. Let them decay away so in 2 months from the combat revamp, all current armor will be for decorative purposes only.
Now that we have a clean slate, the armors need to be divided up into more of specializations. Some armor might have average protection against allSome might be great against kinetic, only decent against energy, andvery weak against stuff like acid and fire. As a general rule, all armor (assuming the same quality of materials, etc) should have roughly the same total protection if you add the percentages together. The max protection on one stat damage type should be something like 65%. The max total should be something like 125-200%.
Make PSGs not stackable with armor. Currently there's no reason NOT to have oneThis way it makes you choose to take the no-HAM-cost withlower protection option or the higher protection with encumbrance option. Make it so one is not clearly better than the other, and apply the same basic principles of specialization above.
Also, why is armor the only thing you can color simply by clicking on it? At least make craftable paint kits (any useful item that can be added to Artisan, I'm all in favor of.) And while I'm on the subject of customization, allow a factioned Master Armorsmith of sufficient high rank make armor (or at least chestplates) with the faction logo on it (that follows the appropriate rules for factional armor.)

You realize that they are completely redoing Armor for the combat revamp right? And all existing weapons/armor are being converted to fit in the norms of the new stuff

I realize that they say they are redoing a lot of things, but until I have some hard documentation on what they are planning specifically, I feel the need to assume it will be wrong and to post what i think is right.

I have seen statements in a few places that said armor (among other things) was getting a complete overhaul. I haven't seen it said that the slate would be wiped clean, burned, and wiped again. If you have a link to an official statement of what direction they're taking, please post it. I'm only just now getting back to the boards so I could have easily missed it.
I didn't take 10 months off from this game because I lacked faith. I'm a bitter old wannabe-crafter who refused to grind because I had been told that all players would be able to find a market for thier goods.

All the documentation is in the Combat Revamp forums for the Sandbox people. But they are under a NDA so they can't spill the beans about anything cool and exciting coming our way
But I have faith in them working out any kinks in the system. They are looking out for everyone.

There are documents regarding changes to the armor system. I've read em, Okram has read em, so have the other testers. There is a change coming. But as we are under a VERY strict NDA we cannot tell anyone the details of them.

You'll see the changes and documentation when the combat beta begins (assuming you applied for it and get in).

To be honest, I've always thought armor was balanced. It was the buffs that allow us to wear the heavy stuff without penalty, and that's what throws us into god mode.
I used to keep a set of unlayered comp on me when I was doing BH investigation old-school. Without buffs, even a set of 400/400/400 encumbrance comp would drain my ham in five to ten seconds it took to take out my mark.
Even when doc buffs were common, mind encumbrance was a factor until the chef revamp and the advent of vasarian brandy. I remember there was always a small group of people on muon downer whenever you went to a popular POI.
Anywho, I know changes are coming, but as someone who remembers armor without the full suite of doc/chef/entertainer I've always thought armor was balanced.

Man I remember back when I first started when no one used doc buffs. We all ran around in Chitin Armor and the like. Weapons weren't uber powerful, no 90% Comp. That was fun as hell.

It's not as easy as you would think to rebalance armor, a lot of things have to be considered, such as old armor, new armor, who wears armor, who needs really good protection, who doesn't, buffs, everything. We've always had a long back and forth between docs and armorsmith's each blaming each other for how easy it is for a player to become invincable. 90% Base comp is blamed by the docs, and we go back at them saying people would never be able to wear 90% comp unless they had buffs.
A LOT of changes will happen with the CU, and a lot of things that you think about the game will change too. Armor will still be a vital part of the game, but there are going to be a TON of changes to armor. I can't tell you what they are, I wish I could give you more then just a teaser, but that NDA is pretty damn tight. As soon as the NDA is lifted I will be the first person (if some other speedy person doesn't beat me to it) to let you all know all the new changes to Armor there will be. But you have to give us time and be patient, these things do not come quickly.

Yeah, I remember those days. I remember how I had to migrate my stats now and then just to equip a full suit of armor.
