Thread: Crit Fails and how you can avoid them
OK,
Now i know what your thinking, yeah right never crit fail , he is crazy.
Well do some reading on this very site and i can guarentee you will crit fail 1% of the time if you craft right.
Right on the front page of this website there is a link to advanced crafting, click there; and go to the crafting link. There you will be educated on how not to crit fail.
By the way, resouces play a big role in this equation:
Suppose you are crafting a Heavy Fusion Harvester, at the bottom right hand side of the crafting screen (you know where you put in the resources and the insane amount of factory created stuff) there are some statistics. I believe , can't remember off hand , that is says something like 100% toughness over 50 or something.
Well... All of the materials that you are making this heavy with should have a toughness rating of 900+, You Will Not Fail
This goes for any crafting profession, that is how powerups get such high ratings and that Gunsmiths make better weapons using highly conductive materials.... The list goes on.
After reading the manual on crafting on this site i have NEVER crit failed on something that i wasn'texpecting to. The only time i crit now is if i am in a hurry and i do not care what resources i use or i have leftover resources from a factory that can be turned into powerups.
I really hope this helps, cause I know crits really hurt us bad.

This is a matter of debate.
I pay no attention to item stats. Number of large structures I've failed on since hitting master = 1. Estimated number of large structures made since hitting master = 200+.
I've failed plenty on furniture...but, ya know, that really doesn't bother me.
Item stats matter when you are experimenting the item. Experimentation does nothing for us.

I'm unable to locate the link you're speaking of. The top-level of the swg site has an 'advanced guides' section, which then gets you to an 'advanced crafting guide', which explains the basics of experimentation, but doesn't seem to correspond to what you are speaking of, and certains has nothing to do with critical failures.
My third PA hall was a crit fail with 900+ unit toughness for all the components, and 900+ decay resist for the final assy resources.
I have built over a dozen more PA's with resources as low as 2 in the required fields, and have not critted one. Since the big patch, I have crit failed approximately 4 walls of 200, and not one single final assembly of about 60. I ignore the quality for structures now. I fail about 1 in 30 on furniture pieces.
I have a +14.78 crafting tool. I started using a -14 station around patch time, and upgraded to a +4 station after I realized the number was so low. No changes in the station.. I am now using a +36 station. I can be running, swimming, sitting, pulling stuff from the backpack, backing resources out, adding the wrong qtys of resource, and about every other thing imaginable and I cannot get these success rates to change.
Anything that has qualities other than 'existing' (ie anything but structures, and for now, clothing) requires close attention to detail in terms of qualities, but I have been a master architect since week3 after release, and I have to say that in my experience, I was failing about 15-20% pre-patch with a crappy tool, about 3-5% after I made a decent tool (ended up being a +8 tool after the patch) and post-patch with both the +8 tool and the 14.78 tool I would say that I am at about 1-2% fails on subcomponents, 2-3% on furniture, and 0% on final assemblies.
Neilla - In answer to your post , you were looking in the right spot.
What is written there applies to every class , for our class (architect) we rely heavily on resources that have a high toughness.
Open up your crafting tool and look down in the bottom right hand corner almost every structure that we make needs a high toughness rating.
Generally, i make structural mods with crappy ore+metal that i experiment to about 35%-40% , then i do the same for the walls and other stuff (generator turbines, structural storage , etc.) .
Then, on the final combine, i use the materials with the highest possible rating in the area that it needs it in (usually toughness) , and i never fail.
I have remade my crafting tools to about 14 i believe and my crafting stations are about 20 , this may help also.
The crafting stations brings up another point.
To make a good crafting station you need the optional components and a very highly conductive material.
The highly conductive material is used on the final combine for the crafting station and allows you to fully experiment on it (given you have master artisan).
Just take a little time to read what materials and statistics you need , make some good crafting tools, and your worries will diminish ten-fold (and maybe you might be able to sleep at night knowing you won't crit fail)
For anyone that says i'm full of it, they can go back to crit failing.

This would be true if the system was 'working as intended'. It is not. Very good reason why you can go a long periods without failing then fail a lot. Resources matter. Tools matter. The chicken over you head matters most. The system is bugged, as is everything else in the game. Some times it works, other times it doesn't. That is why there are streaks of good and bad and not just random or only when using bad resources.
When the system is working, your tools matter as does your resources and you can control things better. Your crit rate will be low. When things get bugged, you will crit one thing after the other. Doesn't matter what it is, a wooden chair or a PA hall. Your resources get a value of 0 and your tools are set to the lowest value. Everything goes bad. This is especially true during high usage times on the servers. Prime time crafters fail a lot. If you don't want to crit fail, come on right after a server reset when no one is on, or very early in the morning before the shut down. Things work fine then. When that db is getting 1000s of calls a second, it breaks, the numbers aren't retrieved and the system throws out bad numbers. You crit as a result.
The way around this is to macro. It by passes all of that. No db query for resource quality or tool quality. Whythe macrois very fast when normal crafting has that delay to it. No db calls to figure out if there should be a crit. You just get the base 1% crit rate.Until the system is fixed, or it may be actually fixed and this is just a 'database optimatization', then the macro is your best friend or playing at odd hours of the day.
If you aren't criting now, be glad, because soon the bug will hit you and then you will know what everyone is complaining about.
Meplorium - Yes i admit the architecture tree does need alot of work....
However,I know that after i have done all the things i have said , i have never crit failed on Anything that was on a final combine.
Perhaps it is different from server to server, kinda like the resource shifts on Lowca, etc.
I am just offering advice on what has worked for me. If anyone else has any comments on what has worked for them , please post them; I'm sure there are many architects that would love to hear how they can eliminate the pressure of critically failing.
Yes the architecture tree is bugged, I am not disputing that. But after reading certain things and remaking my crafting tools/station i have yet to crit fail on a essential structure.

hmm.. i dont believe u can still macro thru crafting. It worked for me for awhile. then alot of people started posting about it. and viola.. i suddently lost all the materials for whatever i was crafting and never saw the finished item.Am i missing something or is this the case for everyone?
Thanks,
