Thread: Resource quality does matter

After last shift I decided to upgrade all my tools and crafting stations. I also only use resources with a toughness over 700.

Since then i have made about 6 heavy miners, 4 med houses, and about 15 med miners.

I failed on 2 wall modules total.

I highly recemmend using high quality resources.

Using the same metals for both builds (average quality).

Wednesday: I builta PA hall with <300 OQ ore. No failures on ANY components or final combine. I felt like the luckiest Wookie in the game. I even knocked the price down for the buyer because no crit fails on anything in the build was just unheard of for me.

Thursday: large house order, using 879OQ ore with good stats all around. Failures on strucuture mods, failures on wall mods, and then final combine failure. I spent about 2 PA halls worth on this one large generic.

Same tools, same station (and tools and station are both post-patch +effectiveness), besides what day it was nothing was different except that I was using much better ore. So I have to disagree, the failure chances seem to have no relation to material quality.

Okay but Mced you are basing your results on 1 building. You could have had just a strain of bad luck or good luck,

I built over 20 different buildings and had 2 minor failures.

The week before i failed on 3 heavy miners in a row using crappy stuff.

Ok, everyone hold hands and repeat after me.

"Crit Failures are not my fault, they are random events outside of my control."

Now, doesn't that feel better?

Seriously, while material quality can effect the quality of the product produced, they really don't have any affect on the chances of critical failures.

Have you ever thought that usin poor materials might increase the chances of crit failures? I've been exchanging notes with another architecht who has also noticed a huge difference when he uses good materials over poor ones,

Even if your not sure it doesent take much effort to use good stuff. I mine all my resources on tat and they are all good %'s and over 700 toughness

Brian - are there any particular attributes other than OQ that seem to give you more success? Unit toughness or decay resistance or anything like that?

I don't necessarily think you are right, but am interested in contributing to this kind of test to see if there is a difference. I would actually love it if it DID make a difference and it was just a bad luck day for me, though my luck seemed to decline significantly once I made master. In the 2 weeks that its been, I have had more crits on finals than I did on the entire ride up AND furniture was the very last thing I trained in. And when I was grinding, I would take any material I could get a lot of, as opposed to now where I am a partner with a weaponsmith so we only go for the best resources loaded.

BUT this is not based on 20 final builds like your data is, I am only going off the 'feel' of it, so I am not at all discounting your claim, and I am interested in your findings.

Right now I am using toughness as the main factor, I tried making 5 wall segments yesterday with crappy material and failed 2 in a row, Yet i made around 50 for stuff with good stuff and failed the same amount.

I seem to notice a major difference and I know 2 other architechts who agree,

I am sorry, but I crafted a PA from the walls up with ore that had a unit toughness of 46 and a decay resist of 4, and had no problems. I also used this ore on 2 large houses, and about a dozen medium structures.. no fails.. not even a wall.. Then I made a piece of furniture with some 900+ resources and failed.. the next 2 of the same furniture with the same materials were at 29% initial effectiveness.. good resources dont mean squat

I have crafted hundreds of structures and failures are random with the only thing affecting them being the crafting tool.. the station does not seem to make any more difference than the resource quality..

Hmm thats weird. I've talked to a few architechts on SS and they all have had similar results to me. To be safe I always take the highest quality reaource whenever available if I can find it in good percentages,

look again at the property for buildings.

its decay resistance not unit toughness

I think that once you get furniture 1, that will have already skewed any kind of data that would determine if Resource Qualityor Crafting Tool Quality have any affect on the chance to critical fail a building/component.

So, if your already building PA Halls, you have an automatic +55 to structure assembly.

You said that your resources changed AND you upgraded your tools.... Why do you conclude then that the resource quality matters?

I would contend that it's your tools that matter, not the resource quality.
