Thread: Criticals:Sony's punishment for architects
Thought I'd share my pain because non-crafters just don't give a hoot. Just critted my second deep crust chemical extractor for a customer.....48k of resources lost with no payment. I have a +10 crafting tool. There is no reason to be critting so much. Two minutes before, I critted one of the wall modules that I was making for it.
SOMETHING IS UP WITH CRITS, DEVS!!!!!!! FIX IT!!!!!
Does anyone have an idea on what triggers a crit? Is it just random chance or is there a method to the madness?
If the failure rate is purely random, then it's as poorlydesignedas SoE made trade skills andtrivial failures in EQ.
However if the overall quality of a resource contributes to the occurance of a critical failure, a certain amount of responsibility shifts to the crafter. Guessing from some of the other posts I've read on crits I doubt OQ currently playsany role.... but I would not be opposed to shifting from entirely random failures, to random failures based upon OQ.
I've been running some tests on critical failures.. or rather, I have just been keeping track of the failures and what I was using when the crit happened.
I was making walls for a PA, and had 4 different kinds of low-grade ore and one type of steel for the combines.
Here's my results:
In all cases, the OQ for Steel was 843.
Low-Grade: OQ: 443 - 10% failure rate.Failed about4 structural components.
Low-Grade: OQ: 645 - 10% failure rate.Failed 1 wall in final combine, and about 4 structural components.
Low-Grade: OQ: 700 (or around there)- 10% failure rate. Failed2 walls in final combine, and about 2 structural components.
Low-Grade: OQ: 960 - 10% failure rate. Failed 1 wall in final combine, and about 4 structural components.
I did about 183 combines with 4 different quality ores andalways had a roughly10% failure rate.
One thing that I did notice was that crits very, very rarely happen twice in a row, so if I built 10 structural compents and had no failures, I would build a couple of small things (like stim-pack a's), until I failed and then would build the wall component. Inever failed a final build after I started doing that, but I know it will happen eventually ![]()
From what I have seen, the OQ of a component has absolutely no bearing on the failure rate. I have a 10% failure rate on ALL items I make regardless of the OQ of theresourceor the complexity of the item being created. I think the OQ of a resource determines the final product stats and not the failure rate.
Same results for me and I'm amazed that I can craft dozens of the same item with no failures thenget 2-3 crits in a row.
3? thats it? I know a guy who failed 3 PAH's In a row ... now that bites

What amazes me is how many people don't pay attention when crafting. Pretty much ALL architect items only pay attention to ONE statistic, and it's not OQ. It's Unit Toughness. Read the darn crafting tool ![]()
My informal experience getting to master is that a really low UT will greatly increase your failure rate, especially if it's the ore.
A high UT will reduce the failure rates.
However, the difference in percentages doesn't seem much except for very low UT. I used some siliclastic when the game firsdt went retail with a UT under 70. I almost gave up architect! Switching to some with UT over 800 changed my mind fast. Since then, alternating around from 500-900, the UT has made a negligible difference from what I can tell.
Of course this is not a scientific study, so I may be wrong. But that's sure how it seems. And the tool does say UT is what matters.
Well, it's not just you guys that get crit failures. Last night I crit failed on the final combine of an R2 unit. I know it's not nearly as many resources as you guys lose, but it's still a fair amount of subcombines, one requiring two different setsfactory components. (Advanced Droid Brains) Still, it was a 20k droid I failed on.
You're not alone. ![]()
I'm not an architect, but I've given them lots of money. ![]()
I have found that I am criticaling about 40% of my final combines with architect and less than 10% for artisan. I am a master in both.
Something is wrong since the big patch.
