Yeah, eventually being a nice person just constantly attracted people wanting to take advantage of that. So, no trades, no discounts, and a huge cutback in special orders is that I had to do. The most memorable guy by far was a guy who didnt want to pay for anything, but wanted a HUGE order. We're talking a while city. He wanted to give me the resources and me make everything for him. lol. I was waiting for him to contact me back so I could tell him to go grind archi and make the stuff himself, but alas he left me alone lol. Yeah, I tend to put my afk message up as well

It makes being a crafter more like RL job. Currently having 12 factories with hoppers full with crates of subcomponents, having 2 vendors for storage to split the resources so I don't make walls with ws resources. WS alone is tedious to keep enough inventory of 30 different resources. Good thing is, when a better resource spawns of what you have in stock, you can easily get rid of the old stock. As for finacial aspect, I make more off 1 sale as a weaponsmith than i do all week as an architect most weeks.. we all know how often we make profit on harvestors and factories. Maybe my prices on installations are too high, and my furniture is too low but i get a fair mix of hits on my 8 vendors.

Another aspect of how i run my business, I make bulk and sit on the overhead. Make 50 harvestors/houses/factories at a time instead of making 5-6 by hand everytime i sell 2-3. So my profits are spread out over a month's time. Rather work hard for 1 day and let the money come in spurts with architect.. If you want something to keep your crafting fingers working, this is a good combo, and profitable if you can find some Tissue/Bone chip supplyers on a weekly basis.

I went ahead and freed myself of that annoying respec window and picked up master weaponsmith. I, like you, am a firm believer in a few days work and then a few weeks off Im in the process of getting the resources now for WS, so far it seems engaging on a level that architect really lacks. I look forward to my first run of guns

Let's see....

A leet-speaker wanted 9 BER13 harvs (a mix of mineral, gass, flora) a few months after I had hit master archy, 90k each. I emailed him back about my prices for BER 10-13 harvs (100-150k), and that as of yet I hadn't figured out how to hit BER13 - 12 max. He emails back, asking what I needed for 13, I email back that I needed practice (I had good resources low 900s, bespin port, etc....), I could definately do 11-12, and if I get better, great. He seemed ok with that... So I spent most of a week with factory runs on his order, letting my vendor run low on stuff... I get mostly BER 12s, one 11.

He wanted BER13 at 90k. Despite my saying that I charged more and couldn't hit that. He expected a discount because he bought cheap stuff from me. That cheap stuff must have been the only cheap stuff I sold, small houses on the bazaar for 6k with an ad to my vendor. I suppose I should have used leet speak in my emails, because he ignored proper English...

Recently, another guy wanted a rather large order. 10 tanned dathomir hides, a bunch of tables, chairs, lamps, desks, couches... I email back what I can make, what styles I can do, costs for stuff, all in a lovely table format; range of price depending an what styles.

He ok's the high end price, but still doesn't specify what sort of table, lights, etc...

I email back asking for specifics, giving a description of each (the oragami looking light, the upended flourescent light, the likes-like-a-minefield-thingy lamp; the small two tone grey.... etc...

Meanwhile I'm planet hopping buying schemes for the hides...

He says whatever I feel like.

Email when the order is done, with WP to vendor that has a crate with his name on it, directions of how to get there from the shuttleport.

Email him a couple weeks later about how maybe possibly the first email had a typo in the recepient's name, the stuff is ready, here's the WP....

Email him about the stuff being ready....

Email him about how I had to buy schemes for the order and that if he still wants the stuff please either buy it within the next week, or send me an email if he wants me to hold it longer than a week...

Yeah, so if anyone wants to buy some tannded hides, I have a bunch of them on my vendor. Pity, my "Tanned Ewok Hide", "Tanned Wookie Hide", "Tanned Rebel's Hide", "Tanned Husband's Hide" all sell much better...

I decided early on that I had a full-time job, and that this was a game, to be played for fun, and so I have never flown my master arch tag. I am, simply, an Entrepreneur.

After some painful lessons, I now do custom orders only for guildees, and for those random /tellers who have a referral I can verify and who are as courteous to me as I would expect them to be to one who were to actually be designing a home for them in rl. I don't expect them to rub my back for me, but if they aren't interested in being polite, I'm not interested in their credits.

I no longer do "deals" for houses or harvestors or whatever, since I've been burned for several million credits for harvestors for new guildees or for frends of friends that were "going" to become this, that, or whatever, but needed some help getting started.

If asked for "help" getting started, I just say "The best help I can give you is to start small and not over-commit. The more you play the game as if you were really figuring it all out from the beginning, the more you will enjoy it. If it is handed to you, it doesn't mean anything, and if that isn't what you're looking for, then you don't need my help anyway."

To those who say "That's ridiculous. On [server name] I can get it for _______," I say "Wow. And you're on Bloodfin...why?"

To those who say "That's ridiculous. I have a buddy who can make it for _____," I say "Did I say X? I meant 1.5X"

To those who persist, I just tell them "Play the game or go away. If you have a better deal available, go for it, and good for you."

To those who ask "Do you make houses?" I now say "Only if you can tell me what planet you want to drop it on, what size, and what style you want. I'll be happy to email you a wp to an url describing upkeep costs and available styles, but I won't hold your hand."

Somehow, despite the lack of butt-kissing, customers keep showing up, and my vendor keeps needing to be re-stocked. I have decided, though, my favorites aren't the ones who want me to do everything for them, but those who know what they want, AND are willing to listen to suggestions on things they might not have considered.

Surprisngly, my ignore list is short, and is mostly limited to the names of misogynistic jerks who were abusive in-game to my wife. As many /tells as I have receieved from people who want something for nothing, or who think they can badger it out of me, I suspect they wind up /addignoring me after hearing what I think of their tactics and attitude.

And, as I said, customers keep showing up, and my vendor keeps needing attention. Establish a value system, make good quality stuff, keep striving to improve, and let the jerks fend for themselves.

him: Can you make a tat city hall for me? And how much and how soon?

me: sure, 250k. I can have it done in 30 minutes or so.

him: 250k?!

My new most-common bad conversation with potential clients has something to do with pricing.

Him: hey are u that designr guy

Me: Thats me!

Him: how much to decor8 my house?

Me: Well I have a lot of projects going right now, I'm not taking on any new ones.

Him: k how much tho

Me: Well it depends on the project. What do you want me to do? (humoring him at this point)

Him: I want a guild hall that looks cool

Me: My minimum on a guild hall is 5m, or more if its complex.

Him: so could i get like holograms and stuff

Me: No, you have to provide all non-craftable items like loot. I provide all craftable stuff included in the price.

Him: thats too much

Me: Well my prices arent for everyone. I'm sure you can understand that I need to budget my time and effort where it is most profitable and best appreciated.

Him: so you wont do it? i got like 500k

Me: Sorry not for a project that size, and as I said before I am not taking new projects right now.

Him: your to expensive

Me: Sorry my friend, those are the prices.

Him: ur gay

Me: and you're unattractive.

Him: no im not

Me: I dont have time for this. /ignore

Happened once. Could happen again The price arguement is one I get in on a near daily basis. Oh heres another favorite of mine:

server.dude: Hey

Me: Hello there!

server.dude: can u come to (server) and deco for me?

Me: That would be pricy my friend.

server.dude: how much?

Me: Well, I need at least 3 days to get settled and grind up master architect on a new server, which will cost about 5m (actually in the 4 range now that I think about it but eh..) plus the project cost.

server.dude: u cant do it now?

Me: ...

To folks on other servers: I love talkin to you and I certainly wouldnt mind doing as described above. I did it on Sunrunner, I can do it elsewhere. But PLEASE..........I cant just hop over there and deco. (And yes, I know I can just shop for everything and assemble it, but thats just not what you are paying for now is it?)
