Has anyone been willing to donate the resources to experiment with this? Two factories, side by side, one not experimented on, and one with as high as possible... and just run as many structure modules as they can...
Because, from what I've heard, its starting to sound like the storage does matter, but only to when the factory is running, and thus it doesn't have any proper excemption to handle it filling up when it runs.
Has anyone actually filled up their factory with 100 items in the output hopper?

I can't give you exact numbers right now, but I can verify that storage experimentation does matter. My first couple of structure factories were not experimented on because I noticed storage of 100 input/output regardless of experimentation. Then I started receiving theerror messages, so I emptied out my input hopper to only hold the resources needed to make the structure modules, and I was able to produce more of them. Since then I have built 95% experimented structure factories and have been able to fill up my output hopper to 100 everytime, as well as having a good 30+ items in the input hopper.
Given these experiences, I would say that the storage rating will somehow affect the combined storage (input and output) allowed to let the factory run (notice you can fill up the input hopper to 100, but the factory might not run if the storage rating is too low). Now it is a rare occasion that I get this error, especially since I keep my input hoppers relativly clean from unused resources and components.

Currently I have 2 factories running, one equipment and one food&chemical factory. Ive recently had this error in both, more frequently with the equipment.
This is what happened to me:
When I first got the message I did a factory run on weapon upgrade kits. So I had two stacks of resources in the input hopper (20k metal, 10k chemical) and pumped out the first 750 or without incident. Then I got the error. I figured it was some random bug, so I activated the station again without incident. I completed the 40 crates of kits a little later than expected. I removed 20 crates for sale to a customer.Prior to the factory run I had 40 crates of armor upgrade kits in the output hopper for storage till I needed them. So now I have 60 crates in the output hopper.
I made a second run of weapon kits right after this. So I figured I had just enough room for the new kits. Its beenfour days and I havent completed it yet. Each day Ihave to run to the factory once or twice to start them up again. But it lets me run some more before it shuts down again. Now Im down to the last 19 kits (lost resourceson6 of them)and I cannot produce even one more kit. Each time I try it waits the 120 secs to completion then sends the error to me once more. As of now, I have 97 crates in the output hopper and 2 stacks of resources in the input hopper, which adds up to 99/100 storage.
Now, it cant be storage. Lets say I had a +99% storage factory, then this might make sense as I cant make the last crate. But by reading some of the posts and with my own experience as an architect, +94% is more likely, which means I shouldnt have been able to have all those items, combined input/output or separate. I constructed this factory myself before I gave up architect, so its prolly more along the lines of +94% (cant remember). Another reason for me to say this is not storage related is, when I recieved the message, I still was able to produce more goods without removing anything from my output hopper.
This happened once to my F&C factory when I was producing some Adv Chem Releases, but I reactivated it and no problems. Currently working on Neutron Pixies (30 crates for this). Output hopper is was at about 60 items before I started the factory run of pixies. So far no interruption.
Well, I dont know what the hell is going on, all I know is it seems to be happening alot more lately. I dont want to remove anything from the output hoppers if I dont need to since I have limited storage space as it is. I hope someone finally gives us a straight answer before I lose my mind and start skinning gnorts while they are still alive.

My friend the problem is that none of us knows what's going on.
I've tried redeeding, 96% experimentation on the storage, who knows.
Funny thing is a factory that I have had down FOREVER that I believe I got a 86% on experimentation has never had this problem. All others in the fleet have.
And it seems like it affects certain things more than others, like the items in flat crates more than furniture crates.
But, like scatter, this problem will never be addressed until it affects the current SWG producers FOTM issue. We have no voice in the process. This one error alone stands head and shoulders above others as a tribute to the disdain SWG has held for their customers.

DAMN! I just got back into SWG 2 weeks ago. I get this retarded bug and check the forums. I CANNOT believe this bug has been around for 8 months +!
Well, if it makes anyone feel better, I just go back to my equipment factory and click "start manufacturing objects" and the factory goes on its merry little way, again, untilIreceive a "You have new mail!"
GRRrrr. Very aggravating.
