Betazoob,
For those that know how to run a businss ( youseem to beone of them ) the profesion is not dead, not even close to it. But looking down the road to the future, the profesion is indeed slowly dying. All that you and I are doing is soaking up sales that would have gone to others.
We will be going out of business eventually also, just a little later thansome others. But the truth is, everything we sell is something that lasts forever.
That will doom the business, even faster now with higher rate extractors.
Without decay, it will eventually be a dead business.
I agree - the only thing that can keep us even moderately (nay, slimly) afloat would be two things - 1) new people playing the game, with 2) old people not handing out/trading/selling their current deeds. Otherwise, there's going to be a point where everyone has all they need in terms of deeds.
Well as much as Id br happy to see all the other master arch's quite a leave me as the Jabba the House of my server I think this post is a tad mad.
Ive been master architect since the game started (less a couple of weeks to get here) and I sell off 3 vendors (houses and mining, droids, crafting statiosn and tools) and I am always busy. Now I dont play more than a couple of hours a day. I have a 3 day cycle of resource running, I have 2 or 3 novices selling me walls and small houses and a couple of dedicated mining friends ensuring I have the squillion units of ore etc.
In the background Im going up the DE tree (now try DE if you ever think arch. is problematic...heaps of components per build, lots of time per build, no bloody customers..).
I sell a medium house per night. About 4-8 heavies per night, 10-16 mediums and a bunch of bits. Thats alot of credits in income...so much so its not about the money, its about being part of a community, having folks depend on you, having folks feed your business etc.
So I guess....if you feel like being an architect sucks....get out...but please...dont bleet and whine on the way just go. Oh and so as not to poo on the rest of us...sell your backstock to another architect rather than short shift the local market

I would like to see a SLOW decay on houses etc...maybe everytime you redeed or something. Moving a house will strain the structure, same in-game.
I also like the idea of loss of effeciency as the life of a harvester goes on. That 13 BER heavy becomes a 12 after a months time (used, not just lying around) and so on. Your main fees keep it going, but as in life machinery needs to be replaced occasionally as a cost of doing buissness.
This would help the Architect line (increase buissness needs), and be an SOE objective (money sink), and actually makes sense as well. Therefore, I expect to get bar-b-qued by flames and generally ignored because I fail to cater to the <insert special intrest here> ![]()
Yes rising maintenance fees would make sense on all structures, it should be a slow rise though. The thing I like the best about this is that it lowers the resale value...I hate to see someone selling a medium house for 25k just to shift it on. Now if it had 400% maintenance then ha ha ! But tragically in most cases it actually comes with free power and maintenance !
I would also like to see the speed of factories and maintenance be things we can effect with building tools and repair to some degree with repair kits.

Decay is already hear... its called SWG and it claims more lives/gear/materials/houses/clothes/weapons/bits for making weapons/medicines/pets/ etc etc than any decay they could set ever would
so ... you already have your decay, when you get tired of playing and making things... just have countless others have and countless others will replace you, thus a natural decay or "churn" as they call it.
New players have nothing, old/leaving players give away or keep... giving to friends generally. New people don't know anyone. See the point?
Clothes that have effects on them should decay (and i don't like it but they should) in order to be replaced by people who make clothes. Armour/weapons/clothes should all decay as armour does - if that area gets hit... decay it a bit. If the monster hit ya w/ that blast and 40% of the dmg got through - might make that x-mas sweater yer wearing underneath a bit less "put together".
Houses/harvs/furn are covered under maintenance. Now if they wanted to make it so that i didn't pay any maintenanace, then i'd be happy for decay... but as it is i have to pay maint... and if i forget... it goes boom. Decay would peeve me... moving is a )(*)(* and under your plan i'd have to go buy a new house every so often, then place it somewhere (can't place it on top of my house...) and then move items between the old and the new... and then watch as the house decay'd into nothing... providing that it didn't do the decaying whilst i was on vacation or something.

J/Tharg! and Chaunt too! (arch/ws/t/merch)
Pay Mantenance is not decay, I do mantenance on my car and it still does not last forever.
Decay should be introduced simply by increasing pay mantenance over time. Very simple, very effective, and nothing goes poof because you are on vacation.
even a slow decay, just on harvs/ factories will be enogh to keep archect alive indefinatly. i know a guy who went thrugh 5 llc(BH) a week. does not mean a minner should go thrugh 5 harvs a week... something along the lines of 100 days operating life.(3 months is a long time). i am too leazy to guestimate math.

The problem is that with the possible exception of Harvesters, no-one *needs* Architect products. Particularly now 'essential' equipment (guns, armour) decays, few people are going to fork out for a new house every two weeks if they also have to keep buying armour andguns.A lot ofpeople see houses as little more than static 150-item backpacks, and furniture as useless fluff that eats into that limit.
There needs to be a way to encourage people to buy more Architect Stuff, but without *forcing* them to buy expensive things they already own, again. I think the salvation of Architects, (and Tailors for that matter),would benew items; work on the 'House as Status Symbol' side of things. All-new styles of civic and home items, along with more styles of House,PA and City Structure, added every few months or so. That way, customers don't buy because they 'have to', but because they want to.
'Look at all this cool new stuff! I want some!'
/shout 'Looking for Architect! Paying well!'
Keeping up with the neighbours, sort of thing. Of course that depends on the Devs, who I guess have more important things to worry about; GCW, Jedis, Actually Broken Professions, Space Expansionsand so on.
I certainly don't hold with the 'This profession is full! Go away!' mentality of the original poster though. We all pay the same subscription; why shouldn't I pick whichever profession I want? This attitude seems more based on personal market sales issues rather than any long-term vision of the State of the Profession, to me.
