Thread: Harvesters & power
I think it's supposed to be hard. Part of it is interdependence. If you can't find one of those great 90% spots, then maybe you buy excess energy from someone who has found one and slapped generators all over it.
Also some planets and regions just don't have some resources.
I've heard resources 'move' as well... like they'll vary over a period of time. Today's resource someday wn't be there.
While getting set up a in a hurry may be a pain with this, in the long term it's going to provide for a lot more playability.
As far as not having enough money, in 2 hours you can make several K with delivery missions. I know they are boring etc, but just do 2 at a time to the same city for 500+ ea. When you get to that city explore a bit - survey a bit. Then get 2 more missions and head to the next city with them. Rinse, repeat.
I find that I tend to split my time up doing:
Crafting (to meet some goal) and sampling at the same time.
Doing some delivery missions while I check harvesters outside the cities that I am doing the missions too.
Keelin lil critters to get resources of bone hide meat etc.
Hanging out in the cantina to relax and get rid of wounds etc and pah tay with the entertainers.
I generally have a min of about 8K in the bank at any time.
I'm playing an Artisan as my secondary character. About a week ago, I wandered out of Keren on Naboo looking for the richest vein of wind energy I could find. I found a 56% concentration in the middle of the mountains waaaaaay outside of town. Since I'm a straight artisan, I haven't used any of my newbie deaths yet, and don't have to insure anything at the moment. Yay. So I find the richest concentration on the planet (geez I hope not, only 56%?) and plop down my generator. Thankfully it's far enough out in the wilderness (and there was a huge chunk of the same number in the 40s to mislead people) that I'm the only one with a harvester. I set it up (which is a pain with all those trees), pour all my credits into it, choose the resource in the menu, and turn it on. Leaving my character at the site of the harvester, I log out and start playing my primary character. Over the course of the next week, I log in around the time it says my maintence pool will run out and empty the hopper. I add more money as I check my mail and see that I've sold some of my auctions. I continue to stay there and logout. Once I finally hit the end of the count down on my maintenence pool, I start logging in every couple of hours, then about once a day as I get the hang of the decay rate of the machinery (I wish it had a count down in hours and minutes), emptying the hopper everytime I check on it. I go on a trip on Saturday. I get back Sunday afternoon, check in, and the harvester is gone. I sniff, check my inventory, and logout, knowing hiking the kilometers of mountainous jungle back to Keren with a satchel full of 9,919 wind energy (soooo close to 10k, oh well) will be an adventure in itself, and knowing it will be a very long time before I need another wind harvester of my own.
Ok guys, dont get so frazzled over this. For wind energy find any 40% ish. I have one of mine there and it gets about 1.5k wind energy every 12 or so hours. Now chances are the wind isnt going to be easy to find. That is the beauty of an artisan, bieng able to find resources and harvest them. So go out and find some wind! (my generator is 2.3k meters away from the nearest town). So go there place the generator. Now put a ton of money into it like 10k. Ok that should last about a week or more. Now go about your bussiness for that week, do missions get money. Go back out there after that week is up and notice that you have a TON of energy YAY! Now is the time to build your harvester. Note: This works with solar too! Ok so find your resource for your harvester. Again it may not be near a town.(mine is 1.8k meters away from the nearest town) Now it is a MUST to find a 80% or more. If you are going to put so much money on power and matainance into it, get the most out of it. Ok place the harvester on a 80% or more. Now put all the wind or solar energy into it. Or radioactive if you want to do that. Now put a weeks worth of money into it. Now once a week you have to go check your power generator, and your resource miner. Now for the payoff you get with the resources. Its not that bad off a deal to do it once a week. Remember artisans arent the easyest class to play. Just ask any master how long engineering 4 takes heh. long time. lots of fireworks/muzzles/deeds.
So everyone dont get mad! See you online

I think the big issue everyone is having here is the fact that they have to do some travelling and searching to find good spots? If it were easy to collect exactly what you needed, then there were be no one making better quality items, there would be no challenge in making the best. I've got harvesters all over the place, I have to run all around to collect my wind and my other resources from around the planet, some are even on other planets. Now I'm not saying everyone should go this far, but if you want to be able to collect resources you may have to go that extra step.
To help with the fact that I have to travel far to get to some of my harvesters, I simply take destroy missions from town that are in the general direction of getting to the harvesters, that way I can make some cash when visiting them. I know it can be a pain, but its how it is. If there was one ideal spot to collect everything, then believe me, it would be filled up with harvesters before any non-obsessive player found it.

My problem is the maintenance. I cant seem to keep up. Its like the expect you to be able to play everyday. Sometimes I have to go a day or two without playing.
Well, if you can get enough money saved up to pay the maintence for all your harvesters for three or four days, after that, you don't need to log onevery single day. But, yes, if you're planning to have more harvesters than just one or two, you might need to think in terms if investing two hours a day or so into upkeep. If you don't think you can spend 14 hours a week tending your harvesters, maybe keeping your own harvesters isn't your best option.
Okay, I hear what you are saying about putting a week's worth of money into your fuel extracting Harvesters so that you don't have to log on everyday. Now say I did this last Friday. I pay a weeks worth of maintenance plus fuel into each of my five fuel extracting Harvesters in 90% concentrated area. Then say on the next day which is Saturday, I check my Mineral Survey Device and what do I see? Well what I don't see is the resource that my five Harvesters are supposed to be extracting for me that very moment! I go out there and sure enough all five are idle and packed full of maintenance fees and fuel. I am screwed! Having the original intentionof only staying online for a couple of hours to do enough crafting to qualify for my Engineering IV Skill, I ended up having to spend the entire day and part of the evening trying to find another resource to extract. I had to cancel real world plans all day long because I had to get those Harvesters extracting again immediately! I truly felt like an idiot trying to explain to my friends why I could not be with them that afternoon and evening.
One thing that became quite obvious to me is that I can't count on anything being certain with SOE and SWG. And I realized that I have no intention of being a day-to-day slave to a game that I am paying for. If SOE and cannot make the resources more predictable so that I can live a normal life and still play this game, then I will opt for a normal life and play a different game.
Don't worry about trying to put your wind right next to your mineral harverstors. Find a good wind spot, and slap down a couple wind generators. Find where your ore is, and start mining it. You'll have to do some extra running, but with the overproduction of wind, you can easily power your mining and then SELL the rest of your wind power for a profit on the bazaar.
What is the "revert" button? And why can't you reclaim exess power from a harvester when the resource runs out and it stops harvesting and their isnt anything above 20% to harvest leaving you no choise but to reclaim the deed wasting "X" amount of power?

Scott instead of them suddenly disappearing, why couldn't the veins just slowly or quickly peeter out even though they no longer show up in the Survey devices? When they no longer show up it could be a warning that the resource will dry up 24 to 36 hours. That way current Miners have a warning that their vein is about to run out and can start looking for new resources AND the most important part miner coming upon a vein that is going to peter out in 24 to 36 hours WON'T INSTALL NEW HARVESTERS at that site and lose everything they put in them shortly, because they would be able to survey for the depleting resource. Their Harversters would not register that it even existed even if they set them down there and tried.
I meant to say; "because they wouldn't be able to survey for the depleting resource."
I sure wish there was an edit feature on these forums.
