Thread: Is Architect a good profession to get into?

I must be about the only one that actually enjoys being an architect. I have actually been getting more and more business over the past few days, espically from people that use the search function in game. I found it impossible to be a selfsufficient architect however. I rely heavily on miners for ore, however I mine all the metals and gas that I need. I buy resources for 3 creds per and sell my finished product for over 4 creds per on housing and installations and over 7 creds per on furniture. I wish i could mark up my stuff 200 creds per resource like weapon smiths and armor smiths, but thats a different subject... I for one am not hurting for cash andlove the profession, could it be better, yes, but i find it enjoyable.

Sorry, but Arch is WAY more viable than DE is.

If you are on a new server, yes. Otherwise no. I would say that is true for any artisan profession though. Architect is a bit easier than most to get into as you actually make goods at the lower end that people want. A new weaponsmith can either grind or grind. You need to be a master weaponsmith to sell anything. There are always people looking for a small house. On a new server it is a free game for anyone to break into, including weaponsmith or architect. The old servers have master monoplies or saturated markets.

If you're not an architect, you don't know the amount of work to reach to architect.

If you're not an architect, you dont' know the amount of "ack! that's way overpriced" comment we get.

If you're not an architect, you don't know the number of times we get lectured on by some piece of **edit** **edit** that has no idea how economy works but decided to give us a lesson in "how we should price things".

If you're not an architect, you don't know the number of times we hear "oh, I can get a medium house for 20K from so-and-so, he's just busy, so I thought I'd help you out by giving you some business. Too bad you don't appreciate it and try to overcharge me".

If you're not an architect, you don't know the agony of seeing your final combine of a large house went poof right before your eyes.

If you're not an architect, you don't know the pain of not able to sell on the bazaar for over 3000 cr, having resort to vendor, and ONLY realizing that that's minus 2 lots from your 10 lots AND vendor's maintenance fee is charged according to the total priceof the total item.

So...if you're not an architect, don't come here high and mighty and give me a lecture. I have enough of that in game already. Thank you!

I originally started out as a tailor, and picked up architect when 4 friends of mine decided one of us should be an architect, and tailor was less important. I rethought how I was going to do my skills, and planned to reach master architect. That thought lasted about a day, when I made my first small house, and realized that people were standing around selling them for 7k, and I just couldn't compete with that. I've since decided to stick with some architect skills for personal use, but I definately won't be mastering architect. I've worked up to medium houses as well as medium harvesters, and that's more than enough for me, it's too thankless of a job. I'll be moving back into Tailoring, or possibly weaponsmithing, though with several masters on my server already I'm not sure I'd do much better there. I will say one thing for the architect profession, as long as you have the resources, the grind is incredibly fast, since so many things we make take TONS of resources.

Still, unless you're considering Architect for a PA, or holding out for Urban Planner, I wouldn't recommend picking up architect at all. I can run4 hours worth of survey missions and afford a medium house, and that's what I'd suggest for anyone considering architect just to make their own house. That's around 120k if you find a good concentration of something close and don't slack off, and I'm sure you could find an architect willing to sell without a HUGE waiting list at that price, which is 6cr per, very high compared to what most of us are forced to settle for.

Thanks Karlithas, you've proved my point perfectly. Lecture over, return to your miserable profession, I'll be having fun.

Er, I really wish this forum had an edit feature, then I couldedit the stupid things I say when I blow my top . Sorry Karlithas, didn't mean to go off on you.

I wasn't trying to be high and mighty or lecture architects. I was just trying to make an observation:every profession complains that they are too weak or that they are broken, but architect is the only profession where I hear people talking about being sorry they become architects and wishing they had become some other crafter instead. My only point was, if you aren't happy being an architect, try something else instead.

Again, I wasn't trying to offend anyone.

Sincerely,

Sorry, but reading this thread I have to laugh. I'm not trying to flame architects because I know you all work hard for little appreciation and less cash, but have you listened to yourselves? From this thread (and others I've read)I would say that 9 out of 10 architects hate what they are doing, but they are still doing it anyways. This is a GAME, not a living. You should being doing the profession that you find to be fun, not continuing in a profession you hate just because you spent a month getting to master. So what, it's a sunk cost. If you hate architect, go into something else that you will like. So it will take you another month to master the next profession, so what? If you like the game, and it's fun, then what's another month?

Here's the way I see it: if you like being an architect, then why should it matter how much profit you make (granted, you should be making at least some profit and not selling at a loss). If you want to get rich, then clearly you need to become a master weaponsmith or armorsmith, because that's where the good money is. I know a lot of architects aren't going to agree with this, but oh well, flame on.

Well, just had to get that off my chest. I'm not trying to attack anyone, it's just that I think architects talk the most about how much they hate their profession, for whatever reason.

I don't hate what I am doing. I sure as hell don't love it either. Architect and the vast majority of professions out there are like mountains. Why climb the mountain? Because its there. Why do an Architect? Cuz I can.

I have no other reason than that. Maybe its stupid, maybe its smart, but when you get down to it, this game like every other stinkin MMOG is built on repetition.

I don't know where we lost the fun between the mud and the mmog, but its gone, and apparently not coming back.

I love being an architect. Being able to build many things that most people can't but if I had to do it over again I certainly would not be an architect. I watch as all these people make huge amounts of money. A DE friend of mine is a Multi Millionaire as are many people in the game. As I walked the streets of Coronet Corillia the other day I saw 3 or 4 Master Architects sitting in the streets. I thought to myself this is exactly how it feels to be an Architect. We are laying in the streets while others get rich around us. Don't get me wrong I love the profession. There is satisfaction in it. There is also heartbreak when you feel the sting of a major Crit Failure. The game is geared towards the combat profession. Architects get no love.

Is it a good profession?

Depends what your goals are.

If you would like to craft to make a bunch of money, then it's probably not 'good'. At least, there are other crafting professions that can make more money in a shorter period of time.

If you would like to be a crafter, and want the easiest route to Master, then Architect is definitely the way to go. The amount of combines an architect does is way, way lower than other professions, while climbing the skill tree. Granted, it probably takes a little longer, because you'll be using tens and hundreds of thousands of resources.

If you like buildinglong-lasting things for your friends, then it's definitely the way to go.
