Hmm.. takes 2 seconds to invite the guy and hit teach. I've always taught ppl for free even as a master. Only time i won't is when they are in some distant area. Plus i doubt you would get much respect if the novice architech teaches for free and the master won't. Who needs the cash more?

Alas . . .

I used to charge 20% until recently when one of the people that I had trained stole one of my orders with underbidding. I now consider it unwise to help my competition in obtaining master status and will not train for anything less than 50% of the NPC costs.

I bought every single skill in master artisan and Architech. mainly since I could not find ppl to train me. I train ppl every night and some ppl i have trained all the way through.

Never once have I asked for payment an will not except tips.

I have many many firends in the profession becasue of this and we now share things like factory runs and carbonate.

I will never ask for payment on training. Thats just my way not asking anyone to change their ways. A master architech should be able to afford to train for free. If not you are doing something wrong.

I am a new Novice Architect. I got a chilly reception from a Master Architect who had been quite helpful to me before now. I have another Architect friend who has always been helpful and welcomed me to the profession. The first Architect says he will now require payment to assist me in training. I asked the second Architect how much he would charge and he laughed at me for even suggesting that I pay him.

Last night low grade ore disappeared on Theed. At 3AM I came across many miningfields that sat still. They looked really really creeping in the night time rotation. By 4:30AM my group had finally located the highest vein of low grade ore and had rellocated all of our mining installations to it. When the architect who refused to charge melogs on today he will discover that hismines are producing no ore, but he will also find a waypoint to the best vein of it in Theed in his email.

Okay for those of you who have to deal with other rude architects:

Valeran on Radiant sent me a tell asking me to train him in furniture 3. Now, I'm a master architect and don't need the apprentice points and paid for all of my skills so I'm charging 1/4th the value it cost me to train it. I told him I would be glad to train him but that I charge 2k for every architect skill now so that I can recoup the amounts I spent.

As a master architect you can receive a lot of tells from folks asking for training because they know you have all of the skills. His reply to me was, "No thanks I just paid the vendor 8k instead.". I replied to him that if he wanted to lose 6k and be insulting about it he could elsewhere for his skills. He then goes into this large berating non-stop response about things (I took screenshots so he can't lie about doing it) and that he was 2 skills from master and could care less.

Now the purpose of this post is two-fold. First, just because one architect may charge nothing (some are trying to get apprentice points for master and do this for that reason) and another is charging (masters come to mind), doesn't mean that he was right nor wrong in feeling the way he did. But, he should not be rude or berating to someone for simply and politely stating they charge x amount of money to train someone.

I believe his opinion was that all skills should be absolutely free. I know Im not the only master architect teaching others but I would like to know what others may be charging now that they have reached the pinnacle. Those skills weren't free and they cost a lot of money for those of us who got there faster than others.

Thanks.

Don't sweat people like that man. I personally don't ask...but have been so tempted. I was a front runner as far as progression goes, because I was in BETA, and even working long hours in RL, I still progressed a lot faster than most. I have paid well over 100k on training as I rarely got trains from other people. I have probably trained over 10, maybe 15k of apprentice points worth of training to people. I have gotten mayb 5 tips totally about 4k in all this time. It's absurd that people don't tip, I can't even fathom not tipping when you are saving so much money.

As far as that guy going off...I know it's a cheap stab...but guess what, free speech, four letters K I D S. It could be an adult who is just childish, but I generally refer to them as kids also. Kids are impatient and have no respect, and no social skills these days. Forget the guy, and move on, because it'll be well known that the guy is an idiot in no time if he flies off the handle like that so easily.

jeez... how do you thin-skinned people deal with rude people in real life? I'd be **edit** rude to another artisan that charged me for training! I look at it as a professional courtesy. It's not as if credits are hard to come by. This will probably p.o. some folk here but I always train for free AND I always sell the stuff I make or resourses I sample for the lowest possible price on the bazaar. I ran a sampling macro last night while I slept and this morning woke to find I had 3000 quantity of Aluminum. Im going to to sell it in lots of 1000 for 500 credits a pop on the bazaar where 1000 quantity of anything is selling for 3000 credits.

Why? Because I can. Galactic economy my butt. There is so much that is broke about this game that until they fix things I'm going to make it easier for other players.

Tonight I'm going to craft some harvestor deeds and sell them for 100 credits a pop!

So in real life, a guy becomes a PHD and becomes a professor. By your thinking he should teach you everything he knows out of professional courtesy? No. He paid for his education, so should you.

I feel that making people pay for you to train them is rude. I am moving up the architect tree faster than anyone on my server shadowfire. I have not met anyone yet who was even novice. I train people in many things all for free. If they tip me it is up to them. I don't even suggest it. I just say if they need anything to contact me.

This does a couple things. If they are going architect you can work with them and not compete over the same market. I have no idea how many times i have seen two weaponsmiths trying to outdo each other. They lower their prices or end up just getting frusterated when there are not enough buyers.

Just with my small example you can see why this may be a better arrangement then money. Requireing them to pay you will get you no where. I have never been trained by anyone who required me to pay them. It is very rude. That is not to say I dont tip people. I tip medics, entertainers and trainers. When i get trained I pay 10% of what it cost to learn the skill. Charging 25% is absolutely stupid. You are just taking advantage of people. Training 4 people you have already got all your money back.

All architects know you make more then enough money for training. I sell my houses for 10-15k for a small one and somehow my buisiness thrives. There are better ways to make money then requiring cash for teaching skills.

You know, I used be nice and happy about teaching people for free, too. Then I trained two guys in a row in Master Artisan. BOTH of them just ran off, not even a thank you.

At this point, I insist on getting paid. If I'm not going to be thanked, I am at least going to be paid. Yes, this sounds greedy. But, I paid all the way up. A measly 500cr or 1000cr won't hurt someone to show their gratitude. It's that or pay 9000cr at the trainer.

And, don't me wrong, I'm very polite and very courteous. When someone asks to be trained in a high-level skill (such as Master Artisan or any Droid Engineer skill), I simply say "I would be happy to train you in that. I ask 1000cr for my fee."

It's not a lot. It's not like I'll making a profit from it. But, it's enough.

Want to pay the NPC because somehow you think training should be free? Ask the trainer how much he charges. It ain't zero.

IRL you can go to proffessional trainers, as i would refer to the NPC they do it for a living, and you get companies (home businesses) which i will refer to players. You can either pay 2000 dollars/pounds to rent a truck and take leasons on how to drive it, or you could find a home delivery company who is willing to take you aboard train you, then get you some xp by sending you out with another man in the cab making sure you dont mess up, then you go do your test in the company owned truck they kindly lent you and it costs you maybe 200 to take the test.
The delivery company you are not paying for them teaching them you are delivering things for free, which means they make money as you are not getting payed.

that may sounds like bull**edit** but i dont much care

If we revert this to SWG you are simply paying a small amount to be trained, as you cannot work for somone for free, unless they make you an apprentice but then what are factories for?

Hope that helps, also in answer to the question about paying NPC or player, i would pay the player, he deserves money back on his time.

I'm with Quadork on that one. Partly because, pretty consistently, the people who ask to be trained in an advanced artisan profession seem rude about it. I don't need /tip-level credits at this point (despite buying all my Architect skills myself - didn't even bother asking, because I know that puts pressure on competing architects) and more than that, I don't need the experiences so many of you seem to be having.

I'll train anyone in anything else - engineering, survey, rifleman, brawler, whatever - for free. I don't care about apprentice points, certainly not /tips. But architect is my profession. Worse than that, it's a cutthroat one with all kinds of pricing and competition problems. They can eat the training costs just like I did - choosing to ask their competition for training, even at a discount, strikes me as rude.

I asked one guy for a tip after I had trained him several architect skills in the past without him paying anything. Pretty much everyone else has been polite enough to tip.

That's the problem with training advanced skills for free. You never end up training someone just one time. They come visit you for every box they make. So basically you are supporting a freeloader who expects to get something for nothing. I am against that in principle. I am even more against it when those same people end up being competitors.

And for theguy that thinks architects all work together in one big happy family, it just does not happen most of the time. There's a couple other architects I work with on a regular basis, but the vast majority, even most of the ones I have trained, ARE competitors. Theres only so many things you can "specialize" in as an architect ya know.

After reading the many responses on this thread and some for and some against and some for not training at all, I think I came to a good conclusion. From now on, I will continue to be very nice to all my customers and go well out of the way for them, but for other architects I think I'm going to stay on a low profile on my server. If I get asked for training I will politely refuse. I know many of you already feel the competition aspect of being an architect and I don't know of many professional craftsmen in real life that teach their competition all their skills (and for free too).

So, I'm going to be polite and say I'm sorry I do not teach other architects for reasons of a professional and competitive nature. However, I will still work with other architects on business endeavors that I know and trust. There are quite a few good architects that I do trust on Radiant. Most are the ones that started the same day I did (day one) and were in beta just like me.
