Thread: How many masters are planning to go urban planner?
I was thinking about this and i'm curious...how many of you out there are planning to go urban planner when the patch hits?
I'll give it a try.
I have my doubts about whether it will be a success or not since every large PA will have their own, but it's worth a shot.
However, as to viability, I agree with the previous post mentioning that. In many cases, cities will be built around (and as extensions of) the larger PA's. They will already have their own master architect and a ready supply of city structures. Unlike homes, harvesters, etc. which can be sold to anyone looking to set one up, cities will only be formed by groups of players, and how many well organized groups don't have a master architect? I've already committed to our group that I would make the required structures asap, but I don't see a lot of market space out there for the independent/casual architect for these items.
I'll probably do it but I haven't figured out what to give up yet in order to have the points available. I understand the whole player dependence thing, but I still think it sucks to have to choose between convenience ( being able to make your own components for power cores and torches, having a merchant, being able to survey the max distance, etc.) and functionality. 250 points isn't going to seem like a whole lot after they've added a few new and "elite-elite" professions.
But, I'll keep it long enough to get the PA town established and then who knows what I'll do with it. Like many others have stated, I doubt there will be much market for them - what server isn't flooded with architects?
I implore the architect community to be responsible about it's decision to take up the urban planner profession. By choosing this profession, you are telling the developers that being an architect is fine and that we don't mind the issues we are seeing. If you choose to not take this profession, you will force the developers to look at our issues.
I can't force anyone to choose this type of approach but I ask you all to think about a few things here. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Are you happy making items as an architect 80% of the time, knowing failures, lack of viable income from the net results, being undercut by others that don't know any better, and having to deal with large maintentance upkeeps with the constant server shifts? If you answer yes then choose the urban profession. If you answer no, then don't.
- Do you feel the developers have looked hard at our problems that we've provided them through ample feedback and do you think they are fixing the problems we've stated? If yes then choose the urban profession. If you answer no, then don't.
- Do you feel like this profession will be the best profession in the long run, given the detrimental effects and challenge it undertakescompared to other crafting professions? Do you feel it will match the reward for the amount of difficulty? If you answer yes, the choose the urban planner profession. If you answer no, then don't.
The simple note here is please make sure to weigh everything before you thrust head-on into an elite elite profession when your architect profession has not seen a hair of a fix or implementation since early beta 3.
Personally, I wanted to choose this profession but at the current time, I refuse to do so. It is a moral dillema.
Yes I am planning to do that, If Urban planner is as enjoyable and profitable as Archetect has been it should be a blast!
Depends what it pans out to be.
Almost zero real information is available, and (naturally, no insult meant) most people are basing their opinions on hopes.
Who knows what the actual profession will be like. I'm betting the answer is ... currently, not even the developers working on the profession.
I'll be doing it...I hope I dont have to give up tka though : / or devote all your points to the leet-leet professions

I'm going as an Urban planner ... and what i really hate is people who suggest they will become one... just to make a few buildings and then dump the whole thing so that they go combat. seems like those type of people should never have become architects...
I intend to make a large city with all that entails, if anything the only thing that will drag me away from urban planner is starship designer ^_^ which i suspect is coming with the space expansion but even then i intend to keep most of urban planner if i can.
