Thread: Player Cities
On thing I am worried about is being able to keep our cities organized and uncluttered. I know that may be more of a job for the mayors than urban planners, but I figure this is the best place to talk about it. How frustrating is it going to be when someone walks in and drops down a house right in the spot you just cleared to place your shuttle port?
What I would like to see is a permitting system in player cities. If a player wants to place a structure, be it a house or a factory they have to go to the mayor to get a permit. The mayor then walks out and places the permit where he wants the structure. The player can only place the structure on the permit.
If this is to complicated, then hopefully we will get zoning privledges or the ability to hold parcels for future sites. Set up a housing zone and make that the only area that people can place houses.
Another thing I would like to see, but I don't think SOE will do it, is allow cities to be more private. Have people who want to join a city ask the mayor to be sponsored. Once the mayor accepts their sponsorship they can then place a structure. I don't see SOE doing this but I think it would beneficial.
A question on the taxes. What if you place a house in a city and don't declare it a residence? If you aren'ta member of the city do you have to pay taxes? I hope they require all structures to pay taxes regardless if you are a citizen or not. Taxes will be the only way to force someone out if they are disruptive.
I want roads, paths, sidewalks..anything to lay in front of rows of houses to keep those **edit** harvesters from being placed.
Or a huge no-build zone around a city hall!!!
I have lots of problems with the player cities as described but dealing with disruptive players isn't one of the problems I see.
And as for private cities, again the same answer. If someone places a house and they aren't approved - shoot them (and keep shooting them).
Player Cities;
Like most of you I read the proposed update on the development forum. Although I love the idea of getting new schematics and perhaps a new elite - elite class I have several concerns.
1. If, I as a master architect (or an elite-elite city builder), construct a shuttle port, spaceport, and cantina within a city, how would I be able to manage them. After all if it's my shuttle or space port, should I not be able to set the cost for using them? Further, as an owner of a cantina, I should be able to charge a cover price for everyone that comes in. If I build these structures using my own resources, time, and maintain them, are they not my buildings? If I have to turn these structures over to a mayor of a town; I lose administrative control of these structures.
2. Ok, if I have to be a mayor of a town to retain control of the structures I build, then comes the question of skill points required to take up the new profession. Assuming I have already mastered artesian, architect, and (elite-elite city planer); will I have enough points to master politician tree as well?
Lets assume for the sake of argument that I have enough points and can master the politician tree in addition. The first month after I build my beautiful city spending countless resources, time, and money; I get voted out as mayor. All my time, effort, and money goes poof, or worse yet to another player that did not devote the energy I did to build the city.
3. Yes I'm aware that cities are designed for a community not a single player and themayor of the city will have some control as to who builds within the city limits, but a large number of player are required to build upper level city buildings. If my PA (ten members) builds a city, we are forced to allow other players to build within the city limits to increase its size. With the addition of people the level of control over the city will become less and less until on day the mayor of the city is no longer a person that shares the goals of the building architect or the founding PA. Worse yet, if enough people choose to change alliances the city can shift from a Rebel to Imperial. So in effect I could be building a city for the enemy.
In summery, all I'm saying is; if I built it, maintain it, I should have a say in what happens to it. If on the other hand I am hired to build a building for a city by its mayor (getting paid for the product), I should not have control over it. My goal is to build a player city in SWG, and although I will have the ability to do so, I cannot control it, profit from it, or regulate it. This just stinks. I can see a great deal of abuse with the city developement as it is presently written. Please think this through before it goes live.

Did they say where the politician class would come from? Is it a new base-class or does it sprout off another class?

First the urban planner is a person to build things, they are not their to decide where things should go or how they should be used. If you want to control a city you have to be a politician. Yes it will be nice to be both an urban planner and politician so you can build what you want when you want it for free, but then again you are essentially donating it to the city for no compensation.
As far as being mayor and losing control, yeah that is gonna be a pain. I wish they would have a sponsorship feature such that people had to be allowed to live in the city. The opportunity for hostile take overs is always going to be present. Or the big thing I see is some warrior with 10 million credits all of a sudden wants to be mayor, so he buys votes and out you go.
As other people said, you can have your militia /warn and /ban people, so if you feel close to losing control you could possibly /ban all the people not in your pa around election day. Then let them in after the election.
Zul, unfortunately the post did not say what the pre-requisites are for politician. I assume it is going to be an elite profession. As far as the requirements something out of the business tree of artisan?Maybe they are going to surprise us and make it a basic profession, which would suck since the novice politician would cost 15 sp instead of 6.
Please give us some hope that the player cities expansion is coming out soon. Im a master arch now and im getting real bored with it. Ive spent alot of time getting here. wheres the expansion.
