Okay, everyone knows that we crafters have to pickup some combat skills to clear out those nasties that hang out near our harvs.
My question is, what is the best weapon for us? Rifles are too slow in my opinion, so I picked up Pistols in the Marksman tree (with ambitions later for possibly pursuing Smuggler, but alas, not enough skill pts to go around...). I am currently running around w/ a sliced Scout Blaster w/ some self-crafted powerups, but was looking for some higher firepower. I have Pistols IV in Marksman, so what's the best weapon for me? I hate the fact that when you're looking at a weapon on a vendor/bazaar, it doesn't say what category it falls into (e.g. Pistols IV is qual'd for FWG5 or something to that effect).
Are Carbines better for point blank/medium range "clear 'em out" purposes?
I 've also read about buying a tank droid, but I'm not exactly swimming in money yet... So here comes the dreaded question: how much should I pay for one of these, and what modifications are ideal (R5 w/ 6 combat modules & 1 repair, etc...)???
Just was wondering what worked best for you all.
Thanks!

Had Rifle but had to drop it to make room for SW. So I just use my speeder bike as a weapon. Is running away with creatures in tow combat. haha (after their far away I come back, but this takes too long.)

Weapon of choice: the strategic retreat on a swoop. And yes, I usually carry a spare--just in case. I do have the login information for my wife's master rifleman toon, for dire situations, but I've never used it for that purpose--just to borrow her lots. I am quite proud of never having killed anything in the game. Thethree combat points I have must have been the scavenger rat I slugged while running for my bikegetting killed by something else shortly thereafter.
My favorite use of the strategic retreat was the time I found a new spawn of some uber steel. I was surveying on my way out to pick up harvestors to free up lots for the new steel, and found a very nice concentration. Grabbed the harvestors, and in the two minutes I was gone, someone else had found my spot and was plopping down heavies. "Crap," I think, jump off to stake my own claim, and promptly get aggroed by the aakuans nearby. I tucked my tail firmly between my legs, jump on my bike and am demonstrating that whole discretion > valor thing when I notice I'm zipping past the other architect, who is busily filling up the open harvestor space.
You guessed it. They give up on me, notice him, and follow him out into the hills, leaving me free to drop my own harvestors. In the end, there was space enough for both of us and some left over, so my karmic record stayed clean.

I'm a pistoleer. I can't say its the best choice for usbut it works fairly well and doesn't require a lot of skill points. DX2 is a pretty good weapon in general and you only need novice pistoleer to get it. Most MOBs don't have good acid resists and it can deal out decent damage.

Pre-Nerf Republic Blaster is my weapon of choice. My crafter is my alt so if I hit some bad nasties I bring my Master Swordsman/Doc to take care of them. The Pre-Nerf Republic Blaster doesn't require any marksman skills and deals out a lot of dmg. It also shoots at a 1.8 spd. It is from the days when Republic Blasters didn't require any certification (a la the CDEF). The other option is to get a BE'd non-CH pet. They can go a long ways to helping you out.

Dont use any atm, due to lack of SP's.
But i use to have onehanded 1-3 and used a nice gaffi stick to help beat back the red mobs.
Now my main weapon would be a combat droid. They work well in most cases.
Now if it gets to bad, ill just log my alt in and have him clear out the entire area. Switch back and do my thing. Or if nearby my city ask a guildy for help.

The FWG5 pistol is very fast and has good damage, if you pick up novice pistoleer, then grab a DX2 also which is a little slower but a lot more damage. FWG5 is fire damage, and the DX2 is acid damage which most low lvl mobs are weak to one or both.

I use the Rebel NPC players nearby. All I have to do is have the creatures chase me near the NPCs and they will take care of that nasty critter. I dropped my Rifleman skills to make room for Artisan and Architect.

Don't have the sp at the moment, but when I do, I'll go the Fencer route. At Brawler 1H 3 you can dish out some nice damage already with aGaderiffi Baton (or Curved Sword if you're into speed).
