Thread: Wes, Can you try to slice through the noise and tell the devs we need a second character slot?
The thing they don't seem to understand is that we heard them say no and are still asking because we need them to change their answer.
Some reasons to take to them:
1) Simple fairness. The Jedi system in the soon to be old game was really very little fun. I don't know how many times I'd have a padawan tell me that they wished they'd never unlocked. I had a huge and old guild fall apart because our guild leader got sick of being a Jedi. On the flip side, being a smuggler was and hopefully still will be terribly cool so why would we want to go Jedi? As a result we hard loyal players many of which like myself have been here since launch day don't have a second slot. Why punish us for enjoying the game as we wanted to and not treating it like a treadmill?
2) Class/Profession limits. Right now we can all be a crafter and a combat character. A smuggler and a commando, a BH, Squad Leader, etc. In the new system, only one class... the diversity of our gameplay is going to cut in half. For the same monthly fee. Err... right, sign me up... umm... I mean where's the cancel button? With a second slot we can still have that diversity without starting a new life on an unknown server.
3) More Toons is good for the game health. God forbid everyone takes Jedi as their single profession. The game will get ridiculously uninteresting. It may turn out that Spy's are uber and everyone will take that class in three weeks. Once we use our respecs we're locked into that class forever. I'd sooner stop playing completely then delete my main who has an irreplacable art collection built over 2.5 years. Once he's leveled to L90 from the L80 he'll start at, what's gonna be the point? Having an alt that can be rerolled without giving up years of work would both give us all something to do and also enable us to enjoy the experience of leveling from CL1 to CL90.
4) They don't even need to be full characters. I said this in another thread. If they don't want to lose the fees from people's alts then maybe just give our free slots say 2 lots and not let it have any starships. This would limit the alt to just being a different gameplay experience without letting us have two pilot professions and without allowing so much database space as to cripple the game.
5) They need to understand they owe us bigtime. None of them have jobs without us. Announcing the new game just days after charging our credit cards for an expansion we'll never really get to play was the height of uncoolness. Let alone throwing out unethical. The new system has to allow the loyal playerbase perks other than severely limiting our gameplay options and removing all the diversity of the character setups. Wait a sec... those aren't perks... those are things they need to make up to us.
The dev team needs these sorts of ideas hammered into their brains immediately, if not sooner. Don't make me paraphrase something about Wes being our only hope.
That said... anyone else have any other arguements to throw on the pile?

I think that SOE taking a financial loss by allowing us multiple characters per server is a very good step..if not the only acceptable step towards beginning to rebuild the players trust in them...a trust that they lost a long time ago.
A trust that was lost... then the air surrounding the lost trust, vaporized... the planet that had the air vaporized, destoryed by the death star... and all the little pices of what was left ofthe planet, that had the air vaporized, and the trust lost collected in little zip lock bags and distributed one by one to all the Jedi's with a loving smile and a big thank you for buying TOOW.

give a new slot to anyone who reaches Level 80 with their toon. Jedi can keep their second slot, and gain another if they so choose. The Jebeye get to stay special, and everyone gets what is NECESSARY.
Personally I think I'd be OK if I could have a slot for my 'main' character which included the 9 respec tokens, plus another slot which could only be used as a Trader.
That, at least, would mean that there would still be crafters on the servers and might help with the economy.
Coupled with the fact that there is very little info at the moment about variety within a profession (I'm hoping that there is sufficent variety and content to mean that it'll be possible to choose a profession and be happy to stick with it for a long time) I think this might work.
I always wanted to be a Smuggler. It's the first thing I mastered and I still have it. All the other professions I've mastered have been supplementary to Smuggler or chosen for content reasons.
If I can have a trader and a Smuggler/Pilot on one server, I think I'll be happy with that.
Then we just have to see if the actual game is any good...
There's already a system that allows Jedi to gain a second slot. This in itself tells us that its techologicaly possible for a person to have atleast 1 extra character on a server per-account.
Therefore it seems to me there is no real reason why they can't do one of the following:
- Either allow multiple chars per-server or;
- Give veterran players a second char as a vet reward. This could just be a reward given to non-jedi since Jedi already have it.
Wes, this second character slot is very important:
- To allow a player to explore a several paths on the same server withtheir friends
- To allow crafters a chance to experience combat content
- Competitors allow multiple character slots in their MMOG's. WoW, EQ, EVE, etc.
Let me expand a little
In the present NGE design, unless changed, you cannot change your profession. You have to delete your character to try something else on the same server. Most players will not start again on a new server. When bored, they will quit. A second character slot would allow them to explore all of the game.
It has not been answeredhow wellTradesmen/Entertainers can survive grouped combat. A large proportion of crafters in the current system also take a combat profession. This means they canjoin a high level group and have some fun in such places as Avatar and DWB. So far, we haven't got an idea whether Tradesmen can link up with several combat capable friends and experience places like the Avatar, as they can do now. A second character slot would allow Tradesmen/Entertainers to take a combat profession as an Alt.
