Thread: Face of the game changing.. we're 1 of 9
Edit 3: New changes FAQ
From Psychopyro80's post and Julio Torres' letter to the community it's evident that SWG is changing drastically.
I'm glad to say, Smugglers are a large part of that change (around 1/9th in fact). What exactly that will entail is obviously still around the corner, although hopefully more information will come to light soon.
FYI, most correspondents, myself included, were told nothing about this; those that were and have played the new version of the game were selected amongst other community leaders of fan sites etc. and only found out about it during the last two days.
I for one look at this with an open mind; I have to admit that I am far more of a 'live action' kind of player and am far better at/find it far more fun to engage in that type of combat, so I'm biased, but I am very interested in finding out what this new game (because essentially that's what it seems to be) will be like.
Edit:
As with the CU, it's important that this gets tested as much as possible; I know some of you will recall the odd bug report seemingly sliding into the depths of oblivion, rather than being addressed, but believe it or not, every little helps (yes, for you brits, Test Center is like Tesco for SWG).
Anyway, to anyone who's able and willing, I hope to see you on TC when these changes are put up there. I'm assuming that the new content will be going up in addition to the new combat system and if so that'll need a thorough going over as well.
Edit 2:
Also, something that might spark your interest, I've heard that we will be able to actually Smuggle as part of the new content; it comes in the form of story driven quests.. and I guessing in whatever became of the Smuggling system we saw In Concept.
Edit 5: I asked some questions in the Correspondent forum and one of the corres who was at the little get together this week was kind enough to give some answers

I will try and answer best I can.
I hope that helps you out some.

With this new combat system and content, can Smugglers smuggle? This is the intended idea, yes.
Some are concerned about lag issues (both frame rate and server ping); has any optimisation been made to the game so that the live action combat isn't a slide show Alot has been moved client side. This will reduce lag, as the play test showed us.
Some are tired of what they see as a change to the game every 6 months and while they may find the new game fun/interesting aren't willing to risk getting used to it and then have the rug pulled from under them all over again.. mightn't hurt to let them know this is the vision that SWG will be running with forever more (..I'm assuming it is anyway )
Definately a good idea to let them know that, there are great plans for this new system, things the old system would not allow.
"Fence Goods – allows them to sell goods anywhere in the galaxy" <- People are wondering what exactly that's about; it's listed where most classes' combat specials are, so people are wondering whether we defeat people in combat by confusing them with our prices, or if it's something to do with Smuggler quest/content missions? All of the specials were not listed, some of the decriptions were still gone as well, I think this in perticular is geared toward Smuggler content.
"One thing I really want to know is will we finally be able to run around without armor. If we are supposed to be like Han Solo, then for the love of Mal, let us wear street duds." Not sure on the answer, as we only did low levels, but I did good against red cons without armor, so I am assuming you can not use armor.
What's happening to slicing? will we still be able to improve weapons (seemingly 1/3 of the abilities are redundant, 2/3 if critical shots are nolonger in the game) and armour (3/4 to all the slicing abilities are now redundant). If not, will slicing remain in the game in other forms? "Slicing will be removed from the game, as it is lame and no fun." That was a quote, but I won't say who said it.
Edit 7:
I have a Master Armorsmith with 4000 Smuggler and some merchant. My CL is only 22, yet ALL 250 points are taken up, will i transfer over as a level 80, or do i need to drop my smuggler and grind out all crafting and dancing xp? Tiggs wrote:
If you convert to one of the 7 combat professions (Jedi, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Officer, Spy, Commando or Medic) then you will be level 22. If you convert to Entertainer or Trader then you will get the entire profession.

Waarangel wrote:As someone who LOVES RP and suuuuuucks at FPS, I have a couple of questions please Wes.
I am willing to give this a chance, but I have never played another MMORPG. This new twitch based combat... can I still throw a targetting box up around a target to see its HAM and not lose track of it? Or do I just around hoping to shoot something before it shoots me?
Can we still target the same thing in a group for effectiveness?
These are my concerns. While I am good at JTL and piloting, targetting boxes, and attacking the same targets are usually what keeps me alive.
I hope you get time to answer it. If not, I guess I will find out on TC soon enough.
To answer, yes. You can still tab target to assess your current choice of targets, however you can no longer click to target them.
Pass thru did not work when we tried to use it. However group combat will have to be more stragety unless there is one mob, as a good portion seemed "family" oriented.
Any more questions, keep'em coming

Twitch combat is certainly more in line with how I believe Star Wars should be, with thoughts toward the Galactic Civil War.

The answer is very easy D-I-A-B-L-O

At least now everything is so obvious:
they closed servers in Japan because when normal COEs got to know what is going to happen they realised how it will influence sales, and decided to salvage the money before $HIT HITS THE FAN! And with all respect Wes, no wonder smugglers had no chance for having smuggling added if their correspondent is FPS&beat-em-up lover *sigh* ...there are other games, better games...
This usually precedes something nasty

Ooop, there we go
For the record, I have always stated (and done) that I represent the views of this community, not my own agenda. Further more, I fail to see how my enjoyment of FPS games (Tekken 3 was the only beat'em'up I really ever liked much) hinders my ability to be a correspondent...
/sigh
People are tetchy, what with the new announcements, and your assertation probably didn't warrant a response of this length; I'm just tired and made dispondent by your suggestion is all.
I know I'm getting flamed for this but...
I like the idea of what might be happening here and yes I'm hoping we can and will smuggle but Im talking about the over all game. I want this game to work I want it to not be CXL'd. I want to play this game and only this game and I truly hope this radical change sets the game up for success.

What is Twitch combat?
Push button, gun go boom. Think JTL, or a first person shooter, or you know, how guns in real life work. Combat is based on your ability to aim, shoot, and run, better than your opponent can.

This game is just about ready to change it's name to Hoover it sucks so much. This change has the potential to make it not suck.
And as for people saying they're making it more like WoW... does WoW have twitch gaming? No. Nuff said. Anything it shares in common with WoW in this system, it looks to share in common with any number of games that FUNCTION.

But part of the reason I find that kind of depth compelling is I like to get lost and obsessed over things and we've had a lot of things in this game where one can have that happen - be it chasing a blacksun helmet, the best resources, the best geo pistol, seas, etc. etc.
So yes, many of the things I've pondered about and would have loved to see (smuggler being a profession that anyone with any weapon skillset could sign up being one) look to finally be coming in, and some of the focus changed to things I wanted just like my biggest gripe with the CU it (so far) looks to be added at the expense of some depth (hell.. some loss of entire professions). End result - eventually - might be great - but I don't have the energy or the heart to go through the transision.
So as I said to Brenlo in one of the other threads, Good Luck is about all I can say at this point.
[Oh, and to those wanting to give Wes crap... f-off he's the last person that deserves it]
