Thread: Just starting profession, any advice?

I am creating a new character and will be starting fresh with the intention to become a weaponsmith. My previous character is a bounty hunter so my knowledge of the game ends with combat.

Any tips on how to become a weaponsmith or which professions I should take in addition to assist as a weaponsmith would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for you advice.

There are plenty of threads in this forum with advice on WSing, but here's my two-creds for what it's worth:

1) Read the WS FAQ, it has plenty of good info

2) Start stockpiling the resources you'll need now (see two below). Otherwise, when you get to Master you won't have the rare resources you'll need to make decent weapons and may have to wait weeks or months for them to spawn. Yes, some resources take months to spawn...

3) www.SWGCraft.com is your best friend. Use it to check for current resources on your server (that way you don't have to fly to every planet every day to check for resources). Also, check out the weapon schematics and make a list of the rare resources you'll need so you can keep an eye out for them

4) For your grind, most WS grind projectile pistol barrels to Firearms 1, then grind projectile rifle barrels the rest of the way to Master. You will need a lot of steel, something like 450K of it (of course, you don't need it all at once). Most WS tend to grind to Techniques IV after Firearms 1, so they can get 7 experimentation points. You will need these pointsto make semi-decent weapons if you intend to sell any weaponsbefore making master

5) Put some harvestors on steel, unless a rare resource spawns that you'll need, then put everything you can on those resources and get as much as you can while it lasts. If you run short on cash, run missions (either destroy or survey for easy cash), or sell some of the grind steel you are harvesting on the bazaar for 2-3 credits (or more if you can get it). Make sure you know your resources, so that you don't accidently grind away Rhodium Steel or something like that.

6) Off the top of my head here is partial list of rare resources (note that rarity can vary from server to server):

  • Diatium Copper (this is the one I'm waiting for, hehe)

  • Ostrine Carbonite Ore

  • Link-Steel Aluminum

  • Ryll Gemstone

  • Rainbow Gemstone

  • Rhodium Steel

  • Axidite Iron

  • Irolunn Reactive Gas

  • Plubum Iron

  • Alantium Carbonite Ore

Also, a bit of advice: if you think WS is a great way to make easy money, you are dead wrong. You are better off getting novice artisan, a survey tool and some harvesters and then selling the resources you extract...that is a much easier way to make money. However, if you like crafting and you like the idea of trying to make the best weapons possible, then you will probably enjoy it. Just be prepared to keep one eye on your survey tool at all times. Also, be ready for /tell hell once you make a name for yourself (i.e. once you make Master). I'm not a MWS yet myself, so I've been spared the /tell onslaughtso far (though I'm getting a tiny taste of it as a master artisan). Most of all, have fun!

Oh, and for complimentary professions:

  • Smuggler will allow you to slice your own weapons (this is the route I'm going)

  • Master Artisan will allow you to make your own MA sub-components, which are required for a few weapons. Generally this isn't a big deal as they can be obtained from other Master Artisans fairly easy

  • If you are a masochist, you can take up armorsmith too. Just don't blame me when you go insane trying to keep track of all the resources for both professions, hehe.

Hope this info is helpful to you.
