Nearly all Master Weaponsmiths know that DPS is not an accurate measure of damage done by any weapon.
DPSdoes not calculate accuracystats of 0 accuracy for pre-cu weaponsand up to+20 accuracy which determinessignificantly if a weapon misses atarget or not. If you miss a target, you're not doing any damage and any stat of DPS will be lower.
Also, the SAC of a weapon isn't factored into the DPS calculation. In the case of high SAC weapons which drain the action pool of the wielder meaning they have to use default attacks, you're not doing anywhere near the reported DPS since you cannot use specials with a low action pool.

It hasn't been removed for the same reason the plethora of bugs still persist within the game.
The DPS is also kept since the outstanding number of idiots are incapable of taking solid advice even when it's explained over and over and over.....*ow, hot plate! *ow, hot plate! *ow...

Well, it will probably never, ever be removed. Why?
Totally new players are sent to the NPC in Mos Eisley and there they say that when choosing a weapon look for a higher DPS.
Yes it's an inaccurate measurement, but it will probably never be removed.
