We had a bigsurge of people take up weaponsmithing on my server back around the time the krayts started spawning in larger numbers. This trend has continued unabated ever since. I have to wonder about the future viability of my profession when every 5th person or their alt is a weaponsmith.
Can anyone think of a possible reason for this?

Because being a quality weaponsmith isn't all that hard when the major contributing factor to the final product is the quality of the loot used in the assembly. The last Geo blaster I made was more than 100% enhanced by the quaity of the Krayt Tissues, Geo Cubes & the High Velocity barrel that went into it, as compared to a base blaster made with my finest materials and no damage enhancers. When you consider what itmight cost for a player to find a weaponsmith and have this weapon crafted for them, what's a 4-5% loss in final quality due to having less than the greatest materials ever?
For a full combatant with a WS/Smuggler alt, all these lootable comps translate to HUGE profits compared to our base weapons or weapons made with purchased loot. Player spends a few days looting, then a day crafting & slicing. What ever comes out great after it's sliced gets sold for big cash. If some prime resources spawn, you only need to go out and gather 10-20k, because you deal in small volumes. It's almost free money, about like having a Ranger/Surveyorwith a Doc alt. You gather all the best comps for buff packs without paying 50-250+cpu for them, craft the packsyourself & then spending several hours buffing. It's a good bit of work, but when you control your own supply chain through alts you can make huge profits with far less investment.
That's one reason why SOE won't give us multiple characters on one server, amonopoly is too easy and it cripples the player based economy.

... Another factor would propably be how easy it really is to get the best materials now. I had given up smithing in favor of pure combatand planned on never returning to crafting. I sold off all my wares. After a month, I couldn't resist the itch, and took up smithing again.
Between the quality of the current resource spawns, the SWGCraft database, & the global bazzar, I found the resources I needed to re-grind WS with HWarheads, and one of the top 5 spawns ever for everything I need to make Power Hammers, 1 & 2h Curveds, Gaffis,VKs & Geo R & S cores.... all in 4 days, and I didn't pay over 3.5 cpu for any of it. Finding the class3 Solid Petro at 1/2cpu was a nice surprise
I'm still looking for the Phrik to make Scythes & Hacks, but I expect to have that tonight. Next week I'll slowly start on ranged materials, but I've already go my core business back in operation.
