I'm a novice WS, and I'm noticing that most of the guides mention Pistol Barrels for grinding, or some other item that doesn't require sub-components. I haven't seen any mention Metal Staffs. They give you 88 XP in practice mode, and require 28 metal and 14 mineral (or 42 metal, if you want to go that route). Pistol Barrels give 52 XP and require 26 steel. It seems that Metal Staffs would be a much more efficient grind. Am I missing something?

not missing anything. If you have resources to burn they are part of the slacker's guide to grinding WS, found in the FAQ.
with it I ground weaponsmith in less than a day.

I was grinding the projectile rifle barrel for xp and it was going very slow. Then a friend told me to grind the heavy warhead. You will get over 700xp per, the only thing about it is that you have to be near a crafting station and it uses-if I remember right-5 different resources. But i was able to master weaponsmith in about 2 days using the heavy warhead.

Yea it would take to long to grind on metal staffs.
Using 6 crafting tools and macros, with a 4 sec pause to fill in the materials, I get through all six tools just as the first one finishes.

using the metal staves/Medium Warhead/Heavy Warhead combo, Weaponsmith is grindable in 4 hours, comparable to Architect. But of course, good luck finding the Skevon Reactive gas or Hydron 3 Inert Gas.
