Hi all.
I have thought a little about becoming an Weaponsmith.
But,
1. is it hard?
2. is a lot of factory time required?
3. is it near possible for a non-master/new master to sell midquality weapons?
4. does it depend on a lot of looted components? If yes, is these the "only" ones that sell?

1. is it hard? There is a lot to know, collecting resources and getting to learn the profession is not easy
2. is a lot of factory time required? Yes
3. is it near possible for a non-master/new master to sell midquality weapons? Yes, its pretty much impossible
4. does it depend on a lot of looted components? If yes, is these the "only" ones that sell? Not Always

But,
1. is it hard? It can be a lot of fun, but takes a long time to learn, and the hardest part is finally getting your resources. Once you have them, you're set and the money rolls in. Sometimes it can take 6 months.
2. is a lot of factory time required? If you make grenades, yes. I run 12 factories almost full time. If you dont do munitions, no. One or two factories would be more than enough.
3. is it near possible for a non-master/new master to sell midquality weapons? For a non-master, no. For a new master, yes, but only if you're selling C12 grenades. If you mean guns and melee weapons, then no, all the other WS's will beat your damages and you'll end up making no money even if you do get a few sales.
4. does it depend on a lot of looted components? If yes, is these the "only" ones that sell? Every server is different. On mine, krayt or gorax guns are now the industry standard, everything else is looked over. As for melee weapons, no, people will always buy base of these.
To elaborate....

Because, I don't like the idea of competing against you :'( you're too big and mean (
)
No, this is really just an idea I've been playing with (I've put up a similar thread in the AS forum), but the idea of a profession harder than my current Chef, and with looted components as a requirement (in ranged), this is not looking as the right profession for me, at least not until I get home from boarding-school.
Sobuno leger vist med tanken om at blive AS, som jeg jo har været til en vis grad før. Tænker på alle crafting-profs, BE og Doc inkluderet. Udover lige Droide Ingeniør

I have been making weapons on Shadowfire pretty much since launch. It is a tough business to get into if you dont have the resources or patience. But the rewards are many. Aside from always having the best weapons to use it is also possible to develop a good customer base that will keep returning if you provide them with top quality goods and a happy face. You want them to tell their friends about you as well. Best thing to do is start collecting specific resources keeping a sharp eye on what stat is neededfrom each one. I never sold weapons that were less then top notch. I was able to provide income by selling spec resources to other professions as i made my way to master. Goodluck and i hope this helps

Got to disagree
Until your known or get a very good location with plenty traffic and have well stocked vendors in that location money wont roll in.
I think you need to get a name for yourself and a customer base first which can mean more work..
also if you buy your resources rather than mine them you will find it harder to make proffit.

One would assume that after WS'ing for 6 months, people would begin to recognize you as a WS.

Well I got to master about a month and a half ago and my sales are rather slow despite the fact that I make the same quality weapons as other smiths onmy server (I have been collecting resources for a long time due to AS, Architect, DE and several other profs...........what I didn't have I spent nearly 14mil getting) and sell at roughly 1/2 to 1/4 of the price and well below that for sliced weapons. I think a lot of it has to do with my location being only inmy townon Dantooine but hopefully business will take off eventually. If you like making easy money I would suggest just going into combat and go loot hunting it is much easier then trying to break in to a crafting field that is saturated with known names.
just my .2cents

1. is it hard? The grind is just a grind.....you have the junk steel to do it, it is not hard. What can be very hard is making sure you have all the resources to be competitive -- especially those required for advanced subcomponents. This is where I make my suggestion....make sure you take the time to gather most/all of these items BEFORE the WS grind so you can hit the deck running when you complete the grind. Doing this will allow you to enjoy your toon in the meantime. You may even stock up on some uber weapons loot. Sitting around as a MWS without the needed resources is depressing. You may find acquiring the melee resources easier to get first. You are a chef, eh? The you are well versed in resources.
2. is a lot of factory time required? Sadly, it does take a lot offactory time. Some complete runs take well over 2 days. I never did chef, so I cannot compare factory times between the professions.
3. is it near possible for a non-master/new master to sell midquality weapons? A new MWS with the needed, quality, resources will be competitive immediately. Even missing a few resources, there will be some weapons that can be made that are competitive. A non-master (or a MWS with little/no resources) is quite the different story. If you desire to start the grind for ws, you may wish to read the guides on how, and what lines to do first. As a non-MWS with the experimentation line completed (and munitions), you may be able to sell loads of grenades at a very nice price to help you survive and buy other needed resources as they appear. Get plenty of junk metal andchemical and you cen sell crates of WUKs - they always sell. If you have master artisan, there are power-ups and repair kits to sell (if you have decent reources& not required in weapons). If your heart lies in selling actual weapons, you will have to be a MWS with somedecent resources. If you have the resources, but not top of the line, then you will be a few points off the best, but do not fret.....contract with a good smuggler. I have found that the few points difference gets lost in the slice for the most part. A well sliced weapon will bring in the $$$$.
4. does it depend on a lot of looted components? If yes, is these the "only" ones that sell? The'uber' looted (DOTS especially)weapons has been a sore point for me and others, but has notmade that big of an impact. There are always players that are grinding a new profession or those who need lair killers (that do not own a anti-decay kit). I sell many non-master fighter weapons. In fact, quite a few established MWS stop bothering with the NooB weapons because there is more moneyin more complex, hi-end weapons. There are also thosethat buy in bulk to insure a good slice. There is no doubt that the big money and demandare in the complex, loot-enhanced, specialty weapons, but a very nice sum of $$$ can be made in regular weapons. These weapons are the 'constant' income for many crafters. You will find that once you are established, you will be bombarded with requests to craft special weapons (most toons bring the needed loots). You can charge a fee or trade for loots in these cases.
I would also like to recommend that you look at what you want to accomplish long term. You want to be a well known, server class smithie? Becareful of what you wish for. If you go that route, you will be committing a lot of time to crafting and factories.....more than you may want to. I have been at it for well over a year, and I am feeling a bit singed around the edges. I have had a great time, but I desperately want to go FS or have fun fighting with my alt, but find that when I log in, the 'business' needs attention. My best time in weapons was when I was an 'undiscovered', top of the line, smithie. I also enjoyed a brief run as a guild smithie.
If you are looking to make the most $$$ possible, don't bother. The 'Loot Acquisition Specialists' make the best money. I have an associate that has made 3-4x more and has a lot of fun doing so. In fact, I am thinking of posting a 'Gone on Vacation' sign up and join him for a spell!
Good Luck with what ever you do!
